Agree that button down dresses aren't practical, they're all over retail every Summer but I've learned to stay away from them. Thinking of them as elongated shirts (well, tunics), not dresses, and wearing with trousers, is a good solution.
Totally works in your outfit. I'm partial to black&white anyway. Looks even better with silver.
Olive, wine and long pendants : yes, definitely the fall trends I've seen in stores here too.

Yep, that first look is really great. I used to buys some clothes from CM about 10 or so years ago when I lived in Boston and was in grad school - they had student discounts and a store pretty close by. Both of those have changed since I moved to DC, and I may buy a piece or so from them per year these days, or even less. Perhaps this collection will makes us both re-discover them.

Wow - great stuff from CM - finally ! I don't fit into their clothes very well anymore , but do like the styling here It's been a few years since anything there interested me ( just too trendy) or fit , for that matter ....which is probably for the better ( I used to spend all of my $ in that store ) . LOVE the first look.

OK, I am late to this thread, but had to comment how fantastic you look here. I am a big fan of the dress-over-pants look, and you totally nailed it. Your hair, make-up and jewelry always look great, and that is the case here, too.

I have seen Club Monaco lookbook Marilyn was referring too, and they have some very interesting proportions there. Lots of dresses ( mostly shifts) worn over both cropped kick flare pants and leggings.

Lisa - sorry the computer ate my response yesterday!.The lilac color is very pretty but I really like your color now, it's very flattering but I love the depth and dimension, just lovely. Anyway, just wanted to say that you look fantastic as always. Hair cut look great, but when doesn't it!! Woman...do you ever have a bad hair day? One drop of humidity and I'm a frizzy wavy mess. I like the tunic over pants a lot. Very stylish. Some fabrics do "catch" It's not you it's the fabric. I tend, like Angie toward roomier cuts, but that's why I avoid velvet or fabrics with a nap because of the way they have a mind of their own. Kudos to you to make something work that you were on the fence about!!

Hah Deborah, I just ordered a pair of flowy silk crepe pants from Elizabeth Suzann to wear under tunics and dresses instead of the endless leggings and skinny pants...hope I like the look when I finally receive them in 6 weeks!!

marilyn - the link didn't go anywhere - but that happens with CM and others sites that maintain both a Cdn and an US version. Curious to see it though - so i'll look elsewhere on the web!

Deborah - interesting idea to try a wide leg pant. I don't own any though And as a duster - I don't think so. It's not substantial enough to be worn that way (too soft and floppy and unfinished on inside in terms of just having regular serged seams). But I could most definitely see other women wearing that look. Not a fan, myself.

Thanks, smittie, kate, Sharan, Robin !

Club Monaco just posted their NYFW Collection. They are showing a lot of pants and leggings worn under skirts and dresses of various shapes. They've got pants under the Jaquetta t-shirt dress....I've got a couple of those. Anyway, I don't know if I'm fashion forward enough to pull it off but some of the looks are interesting.

Well I would like to gently tell you that you look F A B U L O U S and you should wear what you want when you want :)

Love the button down dress, it looks great. I don't know if this helps but I have a 'slip dress' in two different lengths that I wear under most of the my dresses and tunics. It's slinky, comfy and my dresses just glide over them.

That hair pic is gorgeous Lisa and I can see this working so well for you. In fact, I might just borrow it:)

Actually just wondering, would you wear the shirt dress open like a duster? I could see it worn open over a a very simple black (or white) knee length plain tunic (kind of life #1 just as a visual example) with a long pendant and the skinny pants etc. Or you could try it over a wider leg pant and create that flowy EF look. Just a suggestion:)

Nice shirt dress! I'm sorry there is an issue with it because it is a nice style. I think of the window-pane pattern as one of your "signatures".

I'd be interested to see how the highlights turn out. The grey/purple is very funky, but also a little scary (to me) (because it looks like you'd have to process it a lot).

I definitely think the style, with a little bit more length at the back, will be a nice change.

Angie - yes, you have a considerably different body than I, and no doubt your dresses don't cling. This particular Rails dress is not roomy and voluminous - at least not compared to other dresses I have . Not all dresses stick to one's butt - you're right:)

texstyle - yes to the platinum highlights. My hair is heavily highlighted as it is, and instead of a golden colour, I have a very silver/lilac toner put through it to counter brassiness. When I'm not tanned and as freckled , my skin is fairly neutral. And the dress sticks because it's a lighter weight fabric than the pants - I assume. It is funny :)

sandyg - thanks, and you are likely right about the colour. I may not go quite that lilac-y.

ryce - thanks for the lovely words This look is only good here too for a few weeks each year. The minute I have to add a coat to it - forget it.
It's all just a fun experiment .

I think this is a great outfit on you - the long dress as tunic definitely works. Maybe it's the fabric of the dress that makes it sort of stick? Static charge? Ha! It is kind of funny, isn't it?

I wonder if you could just do a more neutral/platinum blonde highlight next time you color to move towards white/silver at a slower pace? I did just a few low lights myself in front recently because the front seemed so much lighter than the rest of my hair. I'm happy with the results as it feels more cohesive again.

If you aren't sick and tired of all the compliments, may I add my love for this look as well? I think the dress over pants look is really cool, but it makes zero sense in my climate, so I love having this place to admire it on others!
I really like the way unbuttoning the dress at the bottom changes the silhouette. Very cool - and ingenious! You wear the windowpane check very well, too. The scale of it is perfect, which is no doubt one of the things that drew you to the dress in the first place.
It is always nice to see your smiling, perfectly made-up face!

Love combo of dress over pants on you. I never tried it myself, don't have appropriate dress.

Your hair looks really good in this picture, I would not change a thing :). Does it look from behind like the first picture? I am not sure about the lilac color with your complexion.

I wanted to get pixie cut myself few days ago, and my stylist refused!! She said that I will not like it. will regret it and that it will be all her fault.

I also had a senior moment last winter when I went to cinema in London with my son. I paid for the tickets and was surprised with the low cost, but did not ask anything. Later I checked the tickets and saw that 1 had a student and another senior discount!!

Oh, Suz. (((HUGS))). People don't have filters, and stereotype negatively in a badly judgmental way. If it makes you feel any better - in the US healthcare system - you are thought of as old over the age of 40. Hope you have less stressful days very soon.

I have to throw a spanner in the works. I wear button-through dresses and love them. See Finds below. They are more voluminous though, so you can't see my shape under the frock. They don't hook onto my bottom or gape open when I sit because they are roomy and very roomy. I don't have a very curvy figure, but I do have a round bottom, so I understand "the hooking" effect. A-lines are your friend.

I was at a show home taking a look around, the realtor said "well clearly you are an empty nester" LOL.
I didn't realize that it was quite so complicated with grey and color. I have a friend who let her hair go completely grey in her early 40s and it looks fabulous on her. She never did any color.
Also wanted to say Lisa that your makeup always looks good and certainly not too much IMHO.

Lovely outfit and I second the comments about the jewelry working really well with the pattern on the dress. You do pattern mixing so well! I love that " capsule on a rack" concept and may try a variation of it myself

It's really complicated, it turns out, to dye hair grey. I wanted to go this route when I was betwixt and between and my stylist strongly advised against. There are a few specialists who can do it but it does involve a complete bleaching and then adding of colour, and it is really hard on the hair. So it's not just a worry about losing business that stops them. Lots of women with grey hair continue to add high or lowlights or pink or lilac, etc. so there is no guarantee of lost business with grey now anyway! Personally, I've enjoyed saving the money and the time, but I'm pretty sure I'll want to change things up at some point with some fun stuff, so hairdressers are wise to hang onto those clients!

I just had my first "mistaken for a senior" moment the other day (due to the grey, I think -- although admittedly I also look pretty stressed these days). I have to admit, it was discouraging and demoralizing. I got quite defensive about it, too, LOL, and said I am NOT a senior. But it turned out this store's policy was "over 50 and you are senior."

FIFTY????? Sheesh!!!

Anyway, I *did* cop to that, and didn't feel quite as shaken by the experience. But still...grey does leave one prey to this and you have to be prepared.

You nailed it ! I love the look and am envious of your planning capabilities for upcoming months. I think stylists "don't feel it " for the grey as they will be losing some customers lol

Great to see you again Lisa... I've missed your WIW's. I think this looks fab on you, you've (as always) put together an outfit with great proportions. I'm another one who generally isn't a fan of the dress over pants, but it certainly works here.

Also loving your hair. I'd love to try a cut like this as well, and will probably save this pic to show my stylist too :) But my hair is so freaking thick, I don't think I could stand to have that much volume on top. Further discussions will be had, for sure.

This is such a great look! Every element works, and works together. I am not usually a huge fan of the dress over pants style, but this is a super version. And I love all the accessories – the shoes and the jewelry. It all just comes together and appears effortless.

Your hairstyle is super cute on you.

Are you going to do the steely lilac color? It's very cool! The dress over leggings is a great transitional look, too!

I really like this dress over pants look on you! The cut of the dress looks especially great on you with the buttons undone like you have it, very carefree and chic. Your comment on it getting "stuck" and your analysis of the shape of dresses vs. tunics was a total lightbulb for me. This is why I have such a hard time getting that silhouette to work!

Wait, are you thinking of letting your own grey grow in, or actually color it...metallic? Either way I love the cut on you and in the picture. I have also found pants gives new life to dresses that I find too short, too fancy, too whatever on their own. You look fantastic!

Ha , Suz. Well , the dress is meant to be just that , and it wouldn't stick to my larger - than -it -should - be hip area if worn normally . It's cut too straight to not get " stuck " - this is such a weird conversation , lol. Tunics are more a-line and fluid in shape and don't get stuck on my bum. At least I don't think they do ? But I know what you mean - most times this dress-over - pant thing doesn't work for me .

Re the hair - I cannot stick to a plan with mine . My stylist had that photo saved to show me - she figured I'd like it and I do . I'm sick of having such a short pixie back . I like this fuller , rounded and tucked in look.
