I own the same pair of Converses! probably my most beloved shoes! I had even created the find for them. see below.
I like this outfit, but like everyone said, it is how you feel that counts. So switch to one more girly element and you'll be good to go.
Like Janet, I can never look tomboy even if I wanted to due to my body type and long hair.

I love this! Like Janet, I don't ever have the problem of feeling "too tomboy" because of my body shape and hair. BUT I have felt too juvenile in the backpack and sneakers combo. This feeling is exacerbated for me because I look younger than I am (I am around your age) and work in an environment with a lot of students (both undergraduate and graduate and even the occasional high school student) and it's often very hard to tell who is at what level around here. I have one backpack (in addition to an ancient very casual one that I really only use for luggage on occasion) and it's very purse-like, metallic silver leather with a flap closure. Even so, I often feel too casual wearing it and almost never use it.

If a sneakers outfit feels too casual, I'll often add something "grown up" like a blazer.

I like this look a lot, but never feel "too tomboy" because my body shape is so un-boyish and I have longer hair. It's really, really hard for me to look boyish or young, so not a problem I ever have. However, I do sometimes feel that certain combinations (say, plaid shirt plus jeans plus certain footwear) skew *too* casual for me, and I need to switch out something (usually footwear) to add a bit of refinement or sophistication into the outfit.

I agree with Inge's suggestions.

I have three pairs of those hi-tops, and LOVE them. See Finds.

It's my short hair and boyish body that contributes to my own feelings of feeling "too Tomboy". I wear lots of girly things that are dressy which helps enormously, since I never wear heels. AND I always wear a dressy polished bag. Even when I travel and it's a crossbody.

I will add a bright lip or dramatic eye makeup if I feel an outfit needs a more feminine vibe (I love a tomboy influence however). And I never thought of an olive/black combo as 90's. I wear it all the time. I am either caught in a time warp or modern retro. LOL.

Maybe I just need to work on my rainy day formula. If I know I’m going to wear my burgundy raincoat and burgundy waterproof sneakers, I feel I have so little wiggle room with the rest of the outfit....

For me its the shoes. I tried with fashion sneakers but almost always changed into dressier shoes. The few times i wore them, i just felt like a teenage boy. Im sure they made whoever bought them at the consignment shop very happy!
I like what you said about wearing the black items to decide on them. Something may look just fine at home but feel wrong out in the world, then its easier to pass it on.

JenniNZ I can relate to what you’re saying: celebrating where we are in life NOW. I am 18 years past college so the backpack feels weird! Maybe it’s just a sense-memory of the backpacks of yore.

I bought this cheap backpack to see if I wanted to invest in a nice leather one. The answer is no. Though it seems a good solution for a walker/biker’s shoulders, it’s just not working for me in terms of convenience. It’s a pain to get things out of the bag (subway card, phone, wallet). Glad I tested the idea on a cheapie before committing.

Great ideas, jewelry and lip color would be easy and quick to “perk up” an outfit.

Runcarla YES, I am trying to edit my black items and therefore I’m actually wearing MORE black temporarily as I test things to see if they are worth keeping in a holding zone where I’ve corralled all my black and navy! These pants made the cut- very comfy despite being mid rise (I much prefer high rise, now that it’s available).

When feeling a little too tomboy, I add in something that provides a feminine vibe - usually a scarf, but sometimes a piece of jewelery like a pin/broach, earings, or a necklace. I'm not a big jewelery person, but I have some retro broaches that I pin in unconventional places like on my hat or backpack, or at my waist to facilitate a faux ruching of a loose sweater top.

It could be all the black that has you feeling less then fab (though I don't see it!) I think you posted that you wanted to move away from black in your closet?

I love the burgundy and olive together, and the socks are so fun. If it helps: you don't look boyish/juvenile at all, but I totally get it > it's how you feel that counts;-)

I would probably try different shoes first (because those you wear all day long, while you might not carry your backpack all the time), and perhaps a stronger/brighter lip colour.

I've started to feel juvenile in my tunics. But a different problem to you I think?- I must be way older than you, I'm 57. What I'm doing is editing them out gradually and trying to have a (very slightly) more sophisticated look. I think my grey hair has got quite a lot greyer in about the past 2 years since about 55 . It's making me feel I would rather look my age- not old I hope, but sort of older and wiser?

Rainy day today, so I reached for my burgundy raincoat (visible folded in pic 1) and burgundy leather Converse sneakers. Both are pretty waterproof. The rest of the outfit was a very 90s color scheme of black and olive. And more COS sheer-pattern socks! They barely showed, only if my pant leg pulled up.

I realized I didn’t feel too fab in this outfit- the combo of backpack and sneakers felt a bit boyish and juvenile. I think it was LisaP who mentioned she also does not like this feeling in an outfit. Maybe it’s the short hair that contributes.

What do you do when your outfit feels too casual / too juvenile / too boyish? Reach for different shoes or bag first?
