Make the system suit you rather than the opposite. Yes, you need to put things in their place -- but when deciding what their place should be, notice where you tend to put things anyway, and try to establish a "place" around that. Rather than making the place where you think they "should " go. (E.g., if important papers tend to get left on the counter and thrown away, maybe put a nice tray on one corner of the counter, papers go there and don't get confused for trash. Don't make "the place" for such papers in your office like 15 steps away from the place where you naturally tend to drop them, you will not consistently take them there! Make the habit easy to form. Corollary is that if your system isn't working the problem is the system -- not you!
