I also support Suz on her thoughts of environmental adjustment. Have fun - I try to incorporate a hint of stylishness as MOTG too. But it all depends on what we are doing, i.e playground, gardening, visiting friends, hiking, birthday party.. some outfits have to be very easy and put up with smudge. With the first outfit, I would lose the heels and go down to 1-2 inch sandals to make it a little more casual.</p> <p>My opinion is that you should only worry about being overdressed if it stops you from participating in activites. I would find it hard to bend down, crouch, crawl, hike over uneven terrain if I'm wearing high heels or wovens or a skirt. Judgmental people will equate dressed up + unable to do certain things to being prissy and high maintenance. However if you're dressed up + able to participate in all group activities, you have their acceptance, not that I'm saying you need it.</p> <p>Your idea of wearing leggings beneath your dresses is a good one. Also if you don't have any yet, add some knit dresses into your wardrobe. Knit dress + sandals/boots + denim jacket has helped me feel put together while still fitting in in the Bay area. I think your leather jacket is fine. For #2/#3, your CE top will read as dressier than a cotton casual top, so it's up to you as to how casual you want to push it.</p> <p>In the end, if you feel comfortable and you can play with your kids, wear what you want. All great suggestions. Yes it seems I need more casual footwear and accessories. I do have a matching JWT straw handbag that I can use, and a red cardigan (or denim jacket). I will get some leggings to start wearing under my dresses (which will be great because it will let me use dresses for rolling in the dirt with the kids without worrying about exposure). And I will look for a pair of flat sandals (if anyone has any suggestions, let me know). I think those will be the perfect ways to dress down the first dress! And next time I probably won't wear the necklace with the third outfit. And perhaps the black leather jacket is what is making me feel like the second two outfits are too dressy, so I could swap it out for a denim jacket. Does anyone wear black denim jackets? I have light, dark and white denim jackets but I haven't seen anyone wearing a black pair.</p> <p>I will try harder to ignore the environmental norm, although when you're trying to fit into a group of other parents (like making friends with the families at the new school) I feel like I should try to dress more like them. I worry that looking too dressed up makes you look less approachable and might make them feel intimidated. If that makes any sense at all! </p> <p>I am typically (though not always) dressier than many MOTG that I see on the streets; dressier AND more stylish than SOME of my friends; less hip and more conservative looking than other friends; dressier and more stylish than my workmates (though I work from home I see them via videoconferencing every day); younger looking than most of the people my age; older looking (because I AM older) than my daughter's friends' parents; and so on. All of these were comfortable and I was able to do everything with the kids, but they still felt a little overdressed compared to everyone else. I feel like maybe I'm starting to turn into my mother, who always was overdressed (much to my &amp; my sisters' embarrassment) and wore high heels all the time, as if every day was a gala. We always tended to underdress because of her, and now look at me. LOL!</p> <p>1-2. I knew this dress was overkill, but I put on some matching navy shorts underneath and it was fine for rolling around on the floor with DS at Music Together, watching DD's first ballet performance, and playing at the park--it was a social for parents and kids from the new school DD will be attending next fall when she starts kindergarten, and I was definitely the dressiest parent. The last time I wore this dress was to a kid's birthday party, so it seems like MOTG is the only opportunity I have to pull this dress out!
