Thanks everyone! Rita, I agree that pattern can help. In fact I remember now I have a pink patterned Laundry by Shelli Segal dress from Bluefly that I originally was going to return for the same reasons (thought the front draping made my tummy look big) but you and the others wisely convinced me to keep it. It's amazing how things can have the completely opposite effect of what we thought--now I am a total draping fan!

And I'd normally be embarrassed to post those less flattering dresses because I'm self conscious about my tummy, but I thought it would be educational. It was eye-opening for me. I'm proud to be an apple and learning to dress my apple shape--changing the title of the post to emphasize that!

That first dress is SO elegant on you, Natalie. And thank you for posting the others so we can see; it's very educational!

You look beautiful in #1. I hope you get to go on a swish date and wear it.

Here, here, fellow Apple: a wrap dress with waist drape is our Best Friend #1 For Life! I still need to find the perfect one for me! Wrap tops are great too. The Adrianna Pappell is absolutely gorgeous and stunning on you. A gem.

The other two (oooh, I LOVE Tahari, btw) are wonderful, but I agree the most flattering is #1!

Yay! I'm so glad you went back for it! Well make you a TJMaxx addict yet. I think it's worth it to dig around a bit and then come up with a steal like this, especially since you aren't starting from scratch building a wardrobe. Hoooray!

WOW, that's a well-illustrated lesson, GP! You've been on a roll for a few days with these educational posts. Keep 'em coming! So helpful!

Also, can I just say I love one thing in #4 more than in the others? The shoulder line --- not just the sleevelessness, but the actual shape of the shoulder and armhole. VERY flattering on you!

Tahari items are generally cut really narrow to begin with! I definitely see this especially with swimsuits - a little ruching is your belly's best friend, since some of us have ruched bellies anyway...

However, I have a hard time avoiding the empire waist look with draped items, which is not flattering to a large bust.

That first dress is fab on you! Glad you're getting it. Papell is generally flattering IMHO, although often too conservative for me. My sister wore a Papell gown to the Emmys - she looked like a beautiful mermaid!

Rita - you're quite right about solid colours as well. I'm finding that pattern definitely has some concealing abilities.

It's the fabric and cut combined with no lining that make 4 and 5 not so great. I also think solid bright colors can be tricky. The TJ maxx dress is the bomb, I love the color on you. Great find!

What are your plans for 4&5?

That first dress is a knock out on you Natalie. I have recently figured out the same thing re: draping, etc. Not only do I have my adorable apple belly, but I've got child bearing hips, so I find draping, tiered layers, and ruching all help in that area. You look stunning!

Recently I posted a keep or return thread with a dress from TJ Maxx and showed some other dresses that I didn't get there. You all said you loved those other two as well, so I went back to TJ and amazingly they were both still there! I wore the black one earlier this week, and here is the red one.

It's an Adrianna Pappell and was only $40. Initially I didn't get it because I thought the draping was making me look pregnant and that it looked like a maternity dress. But now I realize that draping and ruching is actually an apple's best friend! Take a look at the difference between 1-3 and 4 and 5--they're all similar jersey fabrics but the first one looks so much better. #4 (Maggy London) is an "almost"--I love the shape, but ugh, the belly. The next size up was not available. #5 (Tahari) is even worse--I'm just posting this for educational purposes. Both are going back to Nordstrom right away!

Now I realize that cuts that don't have any ruching or draping actually make you look more pregnant, and that the draping, rather than adding volume, is actually very slimming! A great lesson for me!
