everyone: You're all completely right: this shirt is going in the giveaway pile. I like the look, but I hate the feel - the neck and shoulders are just barely too big, and the sleeves are too long, and the shirt as a whole is also just too darn long. It's a hand-me-down, and a mystery to me why my mother would have bought this shirt in this size - her arms are shorter than mine, and our torsos are the same length. At any rate, it can and should go. (Anyone want it?)

rabbit: Thanks! Wise words. I think the thin belt and thin stripes are fun together, too.

Gigi: Totally going to check out that top! You might also be right about the taper on the skirt, although I like its in-between shape too!

Deborah: Thanks for the tapering vote!

Ornella: Yes, it's quite thick wool. It can easily look overly bulky with a very warm, thick top layer. I like tees, myself, especially for this climate (Los Angeles) but I am generally quite picky about material and fit. My preference is for tee-shirt knit but with a slightly draped neckline, which seems to be a good half of my closet these days!

JamC: I've got an idea, thanks to your wisdom: a few different tops that are light knights but cut with a flowier neckline, and bare legs! On tap for next week!

MaryK and Eirlys: Hmmm. I actually wore my indoor-outdoor jacket, which is black and has sort of a circus ringmaster vibe, but I forgot to take a picture with it!

Thanks to you all for the wisdom and kind words!

I like it. A little bit of heel would streamline the look a little more.

I agree with MaryK: a three quarter length black ( light) jacket . Then I would add a little red "scarf" tied around the neck cowboy fashion.

I think the belt position is flattering.

I think you just need a third piece -- blazer, cardi, scarf -- something to finish it off and push it over the top!

But I agree, if the top is annoying then it needs to go!

Great skirt, the fit and color are lovely on you. I'd like to see this skirt with a flowy boxy style top, to contrast the classic pencil skirt vibe it has.

I love the skirt, too! You could try a nude hose to lighten it up. I also like what Gigi said about sleeve length. Sometimes a little tweak makes a huge difference, don't you think?

I love the skirt! My preference would be to wear it without tights. I think they make the overall look too heavy. I might try a flowy top with that skirt and shoes.

You're so kind, thank you ;-)

I'm not feeling the outfit 100% either. I think rabbit is right in suggesting different top which might be closer in overall colour to the tights.

Also, the skirt looks great, I love the cut and the belt placement. It's made of heavier fabric if I'm correct, which would make it perfect companion to sweater or button up (any fabric from cotton to silk) or the two layered. Sweater would probably be the most modern option for now.

I generally stay away from tee shirts lately. A few are lingering on as layering pieces, perfect white short sleeved shirt is one of my HEWIs and for it I will make an exception and buy one, but otherwise I'm not buying them. I find them difficult to wear - clinging, neckline issues, not dressy enough for my preferences.

I like this combintion. My immediate thought was that perhaps the skirt cold be tapered. My personal preference is for pencil shapes and I think that would look lovely here.

Hmmm...I'm wondering if part of the problem is the length of the sleeves on the top. I have read that if your sleeves end at the same spot as the bottom of your shirt, you create a horizontal line across your body that can be stumpifying. Can you either roll the sleeves down all the way or push them up higher? I've never experimented with this myself, so I can't say for sure that it would do anything.

I'm also wondering about whether the pencil skirt would look a little sleeker if it were altered to taper just a tad at the bottom. I have found that if my pencil skirts taper a tad, it helps my vertical line.

If the top is just annoying to you, maybe you'd like to toss it? BR has a top very similar. I don't know if you'd prefer it?
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=934242022

I actually really like the coral with both black and white, and gray.

Even though both the top and tights have stripes, they don't read as match-y to me - they look like two different elements and colors, so I think if you aren't happy with the top, or aren't happy with it tucked, another shirt could maybe substitute in - a gray, black or white for example.

I like how the thin belt echoes the stripes on the shirt, so this outfit without tights, or with a different pair of tights might be great too. Also a thicker belt (if it stays on) might be an option if you go with another shirt.

I think all the elements are good, but your face says not happy, so maybe combine them differently. If the shirt is awkward when you wear it, there are many more striped shirts out there, and there might be one that's a happier fit

So I've had this outfit in mind for some time: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....expearment

I tried to get at it today.

Honestly, I don't LOVE this outfit:
* I suspect that the corally color of the skirt wants a different neutral (browns?)
* I also never feel great in this top because even though the fit LOOKS good it doesn't feel good, and I'm constantly fiddling with the neckline and shoulders.

Thoughts on styling the skirt would be especially welcome, but I'll take any and all comments.
