Oh, Janet, I am exactly there too. And it's all relative, because by your description, you seem to have exactly the body I have wanted to have all my life. Wider hips, mainly. Just to show how personal it is. However, I totally hear you on how you still feel about them. All I hope is that younger women today are not as wounded by mass media images, as there seems to be more variety in models, and that we are also more aware of Photoshop's touches.

BTW believe me, I do not lack cellulite on my thighs. But I have been doing a lot of aquafit this passed year which really toned my legs and seem to have affected the skin too. The explanation might be that I have poor circulation, and movement in water is improving it, therefore improving the skin.

Dianthus, that must have been awful for you. Our mothers didn't know back then that the pain they felt from their alienation would trickle down onto us like this. When you had the thighs you thought were right, it was because the rest of your body was under your ideal and maybe too thin (I too experienced this after my son... except for the thighs). Me too as a young woman once had these non touching thighs for about two minutes, and the rest of me was sickly thin, actually I looked like 100 years old (and I was in my early twenties).

Kris and Janet, I am also wide-hipped and heavy-thighed. I grew up with a 5'8" mother who rarely weighed over 130 lbs and has 34-35" thin legs so I know exactly how you feel. The only time I was even close to having the thighs of my dreams was when I was well below the bottom of the normal BMI range (after my son was born I just kept losing weight no matter what I did). Having said that, I have never noticed that either of you has heavy thighs or hips. Go figure.

Kris, I really like both outfits but especially #2. The proportions and mono blue color is lovely.

Krishnidoux, I *totally and completely* understand thigh anxiety! Mine started at about age 14, when I was all of 115 lbs at 5'7" so it's not like I had any extra weight on me. It's simply how my body is made -- I have wide hips and my thighs are the absolute one place on my body that will hang onto any fat. Honestly, I have hated that for almost my whole adult life. I'm working on not hating anything about my body anymore, but it's not always easy.

Funny thing, by your friend's standard, I've almost been "slim" but only because my hips are so wide set that I've never had trouble with my thighs rubbing together and my shorts legs riding up -- that problem seems to be much more prevalent among slim-hipped ladies.

Isn't it funny -- and by funny, I guess I mean awful -- how we internalize these arbitrary definers of beauty or desirability? I still struggle with my thighs even though I've made peace with pretty much everything else about my body, 30+ years after my first realization that they were not model-perfect. I look at yours and envy the muscle tone, smooth skin, and lack of cellulite, which are problems that still plague me even though I've been running for over a year. I try to focus instead on how grateful I am that my legs allow me to run 3, 6, 10, or 13 miles!

So just letting you know you have company -- I sympathize!

Thank you everybody for your compliments! Also, thank you for putting me back into reality about my thighs. I tend to over focus on them as if they were the culprit of my wardrobe problems! When this is simply warped. Well, still in therapy so I guess there is work ahead.

I don't know why I'm haunted - still, to this day - by the 80's silhouette of a Brooke Shields or a Daryl Hannah's long straight legs... I remember back in the day a (slim, tall) friend mentioning that in order to be considered "slim", one had to be able to "see the day between the thighs" (voir le jour entre les cuisses). Which was her case. Like in this picture:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yr_r.....ated96.jpg
For some reason, somewhere between 1982 and 1987, this "ideal" was imprinted in me so strongly it burnt through all my future reasoning. Of course I was nothing like that, being petite and shapely. My thighs touched. They touched even more in shorts, which would have the unfortunate tendency to rise right up at this very spot as I walked. Now the two horizontal shorts' hems were not horizontal any more, but seemed to be pointing at my crotch as if advertising it! Oh horror to me with my catholic upbringing.

It never occurred to me that the problem were these atrocious shapeless shorts that were sold back then. I thought I was the problem. I was causing perfectly well sewn shorts to become hideous on me. My best friend, the tall slim one, could wear them all day with no problem, the shorts fell perfectly around her slim thighs, with lots of space in between for the fabric to fall straight. I came to believe that my wearing shorts was messy and frumpy.

So for a good portion of my life I avoided them! Which was wrong, of course.

Today I know my thighs are nice and shapely. I know it intellectually. But some days, when I am tired, or when I am in foreign territory, I start feeling insecure again about them.

Love the blue and the proportions in both looks! In this outfit, I feel the heavier shoe is terrific -- it grounds you. BTW -- your legs are strong but, really, far from chunky. Skinny legs present their own difficulties (I speak entirely theoretically here -- lol).

You look great in these! Very biker-chic...in the sense of bicycle, not motor-bike! This is a perfect outfit for what you were doing. And by the way, your thighs are not chunky but STRONG! (And very nice, too, by the way!)

This is what I am wearing today. DH and I are getting ready to go get out bikes from the shop. (Of course I will change shoes then).

I have a serious thing for monochromatic looks. With a long rise, small hips, and chunky thighs, I have always struggled to find well fitting shorts that didn't make my already short legs look even shorter. I am pretty happy with this pair, which was surprisingly cheap!

Pic 1 - With a blue printed pashmina scarf;

Pic 2 - With my favourite summer navy blue jeans jacket.

Comments, criticisms, opinions welcome!

Thanks for watching.
