Suz I think those thoughts will become clearer after a few more weeks of looking at how I've been dressing! As you mention, silhouette is definitely a component (I don't think I'm a uniform dresser) and I often think about contrast as Jenni identified. There probably is something around the types of patterns I'm drawn to as well, I'd never thought of them as geometric Cat2 but that definitely describes quite a lot of my patterns.

I also struggle with blazers Jenni, I tend to use them like outerwear and take them off when I arrive as they often feel too restrictive across my shoulders to wear all day. I will have to look at a few more options as Sharan suggests as I don't love cardigans, that's why I had moved to sweaters for casual but they aren't quite the right vibe for work. I will also dig into Kellygirls posts, always good to get some inspiration!

These are all fab outfits, Rachel! I think your attention to detail pays off (as in the brown sandals picking up the brown buttons on the linen dress, and the ruffle at the neck of your top peeking out from the pullover you ended up needed for warmth).

Good thing you didn't pass on your cardigans too soon! A thought I have is that if you continue to need toppers for your dresses, you might keep an eye out for a short jacket to swap out with the cardigans sometimes. Something in denim, washed black, or navy.

Another thought I had: Have you seen posts by kellygirl on the forum? She has a similar build to yours (inverted triangle), some crossover in style with yours, and has shown a lot of WIWs with dresses and jackets. You might find some inspiration in them.

A terrific week of outfits, Rachel! I'm waiting with interest to hear the ideas that are percolating in your head.

I especially like your gallery outfit, and outfits 7 (gorgeous top!) and 9/10 -- such a relaxed and pretty dress.

You show an impressive range of silhouette in your outfits. And it seems with your climate, toppers really are required for part of most days. It's similar where I live for most of the year. Except we also get colder winters.

Gorgeous sunflowers, by the way!

I think I see that you like some dark and light contrast, some geometrics and some ditsy florals?
My favourite is the dress in 8/9 but also the skirt in 4 and the dress in 10/11.
I have the same difficulty as you with suitable toppers in hot summer because aircon can be very cold and outside hot! I own 5 summer cardigans and 2 bomber jackets plus a few more dressy jackets. Because I am not a blazer fan (I find them too stiff and cannot work in them, must be able to move my arms comfortably) I like to have a range of cardigans especially.
Today I am wearing a dressy top with shorts for a day off (chose the top as cooler temperature-wise, to take granddaughter to dance class). I feel good in this outfit. I wore a summer cardigan for part of the dance class as they had aircon in the studio!

Angie I'm going to do some searching about 90s style, fashion isn't quite what I remember from that decade - mainly primary school! Sarah I only wear navy nail polish and feel like it kind of bookends my hair and it's now super weird for me to look at my toes if I'm not wearing it.

Cookie I agree the cardigan in #9 isn't quite the right topper for that dress but felt like the best of the options I had (the one in #11 is different). While I've focused on casual toppers over the last wee while, I haven't needed to think about work options as my old office didn't use air conditioning (for environmental reasons) and thus you were able to dress more in line with the actual weather. I want to be careful with further additions so may accept some toppers that are just ok for now.

Jaime I also see a pattern emerging and I don't know if I would have spotted it without putting them all together like this. I'm really interested to see what a few more weeks of doing this reveals.

Lisa I never quite feel myself in jeans/shorts and a tee so finding the right blouse options has really changed those outfits for me. But then I am finding tees exactly the right way to dress down something like that skirt. So for me there is obviously a balance between casual and dressy within an outfit that make it feel right!

Thanks everyone for looking and your kind comments. I hope the weather starts improving soon for those of you enduring winter!

Pretty sunflowers!

Washed black sounds like a great way to wear black. I have a pair of faded black jeans that work well for my shift away from black. It's certainly a softer look than non faded/washed black. I also really like pairing black with brown footwear to lighten up an outfit, nice job!

#4 - Fun skirt and it looks fun to wear.

Denim shorts and a blouse instead of a tee is a great idea. I've debating some non tee options for summer this year for something new myself. I adore graphic tees but I think it will be fun to mix it up with non graphic tee options paired with shorts.

The dress in #11 is lovely on you as well!

This was a great week! I really like the linen dress with the brown sandals… I can see this with a shorter cardigan or other slightly more structured top layer. I LOVE the gallery outfit and what an interesting exhibit that sounds like! The other linen dress is great with the shoes. Also really like the floral dress but not wild about it with the long loose cardigan. I DO however think the cardigan (same one?) looks great with the last dress. Hard to pick a favorite! Oh, I also quite like the outfit with the skinny jeans but I guess it fell off my non-pants-wearing radar, haha.
Also, thanks for the sunflowers. It’s been below freezing here for what feels like forever.

My favourites are # 4 - I love the interesting combination of the skirt with the white shoes, # 7 - lovely top, I love the sleek silhouette of the outfit and I have a passion for colored suede moccasins!, and # 8 - pretty, feminine dress, flattering on you. In these days we have freezing temperatures where I live, often with grey sky - it's a pleasure to see those beautiful sunflowers against the blue sunny sky.

Another week of outfits, as I mentioned in a comment on last weeks post, there are some thoughts percolating about my wider style at the moment but I’m not able to articulate them yet.

I had a very tight deadline Mon-Thu which meant I was not feeling very inspired with some of my work outfits. This is the sort of week I would normally have soothed the work stress with some shopping but I’m not looking at any of my second-hand sources so haven’t been tempted!

Any thoughts, future styling ideas etc are appreciated.

14th Feb – Photos 1- 3 Various errands and went to a sunflower field with a friend and her kids.

Black and I can have a challenging relationship as it can be too harsh on my colouring. In summer I have found washed black works well and this linen dress feels versatile across a range of contexts. The khaki jumper is back again as a topper but I didn’t need it for most of the day. The brown slides pick up the little bit of brown in the buttons down the front of the dress.

15th Feb – Photos 4 Gallery exhibition with my parents (it was an exhibition of furniture made from a tree that blew down on their farm) and then out for lunch with them.

This felt like it struck the right balance of casual but with some interest and I felt contextually appropriate as this was an event in a small community gallery. I did put on and take off a couple of necklace options, in the end deciding to lean into the more casual vibe without one. The skirt was a bargain second hand addition and just feels fun to wear!

16th Feb – Photo 5 Errands

This has been an easy summer formula (denim with a woven top/blouse) however it did lead me to binge purchasing 4 new-to-me blouses. When something is working well, I can get into a pattern of thinking that more would be better but more actually leads to me feeling overwhelmed as I don’t have enough opportunities to wear all the options. I need to remember to focus on enjoying the pieces I have and how they are already meeting my needs!

17th Feb – Photo 6 Work

This black and grey linen dress is good for warm days but the air conditioning meant I wore a light grey jumper over-top all day. It wasn’t the best match but oh well.

18th Feb – Photo 7 Work

I don’t think the photo captures this outfit very well, the pants are navy not black and the top/pant proportions look a little off. I ended up wearing a black merino over-top all day but the ruffle around the neck stuck out a bit to add some interest.

19th Feb – Photos 8-9 Work then was meant to attend a networking event but a meeting overran. It was a very, very warm day and I had wanted to feel good for the networking event.

This was the first wear of this second hand dress, it felt fun and I’m really liking these longer, looser fits. Have had to dig out some old cardigans, good thing I had just put them in my holding zone.

20th Feb – Photos 10-11 Work

DH commented on this outfit when I got home, he thought the shoes were a good combination with the dress. Another one of the rescued cardigans, I may need to assess whether I have the right mix of toppers for the new office environment. Will see if there are any pieces that I'm avoiding wearing over the coming weeks because I don't have a topper for it.
