Love that jacket.
I made the decision this year would be the year that I clean out this house. It is a hard job but I do not want my kids to have to do it. I have gotten through two rooms. It is hard work.

What an ordeal and how well you negotiated it! It is never an easy job and this one sounds like it was full of potential complications. So glad you were able to do it all so efficiently and stylishly! That sweater jacket is the best!

That was a good solution and you look great in your beautiful jacket. My mother was a saver and the house, garage, shed, and a RV were full of stuff she had collected for forty years. Fortunately for me my brother inherited the pack rat gene and he volunteered to go through everything. She had cash and travelers checks hidden or forgotten various places like old bags, pockets, and albums so he did well, I'm sure.

That is something to celebrate for sure. When my mom moved from her house to a condo we helped her do a huge purge and then when she passed away a few years later had to do it again with the remaining stuff. Amazing how much can accumulate over the years. A lot of the furniture had sentimental value for us so that was hard.

Congratulations and you look great!

Last year Mr. M hired a company to come help us clean out accumulated treasures. When he finally retired he had rented a storage unit and filled it with stuff. They started there and came to our house next. They were great--they drove off with a truck full of stuff, including a lot of my accumulated books. What can be donated will be, what needed to go to a place for old computers and electronic good would be taken there, and old files that needed to be shredded would be taken care of.

I want them back soon. After my sister died we talked with her daughter. She and family will have a big job cleaning out the house to get ready to sell. This experience has motivated me to start cleaning out stuff I've accumulated, but it's hard.

My closet is stuffed with clothes I no longer wear or need. Angie's post today is so timely. I used to be good at weeding out things, but not lately.

Please share any wisdom you have learned from your experience.

Well done Mary. I wonder if it was at all emotional seeing any of the old stuff, if any of it used to belong to you. It sounds like it was all accomplished really smoothly. I am totally dreading clearing the house when Neil’s mother dies, she is 89 and her late husband built that house for them to live in when they married- 1956! It’s 70 years this year. Can you imagine the amount of stuff in there?!
You look excellent, I love the new bright jacket.

Having been through something like what you’ve gone through - when DH’s mother died - leaving a large house full of stuff, and then helping my mother downsize from her cottage and house to a condo, and then an assisted living apartment - I totally understand.

DH and I are keeping on top of things in our current home. I’m grateful for the storage we have. It is perfect for the seasonal rotation of ‘stuff’ but there is nowhere to hide stuff that is superfluous to our lives. Decisions have to be made!

I do love that fabulous jacket…

As I posted a day or so ago, I am on "vacation" to deal with my late former husband's belongings. I am pleased to report that we were able to clean out the storage unit and almost everything went to a thrift store that will sell it and donate the money to charity. We didn't have to pay to have it taken away, it has a fighting chance of finding homes that will appreciate it, and the proceeds will go to a good cause. I swear, it feels like a miracle.

My daughter, her aunt, and I went to dinner tonight to celebrate and I wore my old pleather pants, black mock turtle sweater, and my new sweater jacket. It was quite cool so you can't see the fleece-lined tights underneath, but they came in handy!

Thanks for looking! And my tip for estate stuff: Proceed as though you were being held at gunpoint -- under no circumstances should you EVER go to the second location because nothing good can ever come of it! (We should have had an estate sale when he moved out of his house!)
