Hah Joy, the dogs I mentioned belong to neighbors, not me! I like the idea of alpaca but find it way too itchy even in small amounts.

Star, no need to feel ashamed! We all do what we can

Ket, yes do try heated gloves! They really changed things for the better for me!

Chris I am feeling quite ashamed. This winter I don't want to walk too far even around 0 to 5 degrees celsius. Good on you, and a reminder to me how important it is to get outside and move daily.

Be sure to put reflectors on your dog. Those are often the frist I see when driving after dark. Wooly socks are great walking in cold weather. I recently found alpaca at a Christmas market and wish I had bought more. They are soft and warm, not itchy like wool.

Hmm... too bad about the foot heaters Style Fan. I tried those warmer packs for my hands and didn't find them to work all that well. The heat the palm of your hand but not fingers. I even tried making my own (filled with rice, heat in the microwave). They lasted about 15 minutes I think you live in a climate that's colder than mine .... cold feet or hands are just plain miserable :-(

Thanks Firecracker! Once you start looking at "ski socks" in a general outdoor store or a ski gear store it's amazing how many colors/patterns there are! (Online too of course). I think I got those at a store called EMS (Easter Mountain Sports) ... it's a Northeast US store much like REI.

Suz - waving at my reflective vest twin! The heated gloves were my first battery-powered clothing purchase. They don't make my hands feel toasty warm but they make them not hurt when it's really cold and that's good enough for me.

Jaime - I think I had heard about battery heated gloves from a boss of mine from many years ago who was a season ticket holder for our local (American) football team. The playing season goes deep into winter and many teams are in cold places. I only bought them for myself about 2 years ago and once I got on Amazon I saw LOTS of stuff like that.

Thanks Zaeobi and Suntiger - I guess I just decided that if I'm going to live in a place with cold winters I need to find a way to spend at least a little time outdoors enjoying it.

Thanks Dee! Nope not letting the cold boss me around

Thanks Helena!

April - wow that's weird about the fumes. These are all fleece lined leggings, not tights. I have quite a few, at least 6 or 7 years old, either purchased at TJMAxx where I took whatever brands they had that fit, or Macys. They last a long time. I never noticed any fumes

RobinF great point about how drivers need to be able to see you when you are on foot. This morning a sander truck was out (more snow but not enough for plows) and I made a point of getting as far off the road as I could when I saw that truck coming. Self preservation but also don't want to make it difficult for the folks who keep the roads passable.

Janet, it's funny, I just think of my walking route as "the side street next to my house".

Angie, EXACTLY! hiding indoors from the elements, whatever they are, is so limiting!

Style Fan, heated socks would be great! I have insulated boots and thick wool socks so my feet don't get cold on my walks but do whatever works!

You may have led me directly to a HEWI - fleece lined leggings. Must ask a question, though. Last time I bought fleece-lined tights (the kind that are like pantyhose) I tried six ways from Sunday to get them to offgas the choking fumes the fleece emitted. Washed countless times, aired them endlessly, always took them off because of the fumes.

So, how about the Kyodans?

What a beautiful place to walk! I absolutely hear you on the need for lights and reflective clothing. I am usually out after dark in our very dark neighbourhood and I have a toque with built-in headlamp, plus reflective vest. And if anyone has any objections -- well, to heck with them! These clothes are appropriate for my "social" encounters as well -- also with more dogs than humans. Plus the odd duck or deer, and occasionally with an eagle.

I think I need to get a pair of the heated gloves for Mr. Suz. His hands get so cold!

Thanks Sisi, Joy, and Roberta! I made this early morning walk a habit when I first retired and it was one of the best things I'v ever done. And, I DO have a great outdoor environment to work with. I occasionally see deer and often fairly close by.

Joy - Amazon is full of choices in battery-heated clothing. Available at other places too of course. Hunters and American football fans in cold climates have been wearing this type of stuff for as long as it's been available. I just dipped my toe in a few years ago.

You are a braver soul then I am, for sure, but those beautiful winter scenes must lure you outside. Thank heaven for the technology to keep you warm!

It's been in the very low double digits F for about a week at the time I go out for my early morning walk of just over a mile (sometimes longer). Plus it snowed a few of those mornings and there is still some snow/ice along the sides of the roadways. It does occasionally get colder but this is at the low end of "normal" winter temps around here.

Here is what I wear. 2 layers of hats and fleece lined tights. Battery-heated gloves AND a new-this-year battery vest, and all the other stuff you see. . My goal is to not "feel" cold during the 35-40 minutes I'm outside, and I do pretty well at that. ( I don’t need the battery items when it’s 10 degrees warmer)

I'm usually out before daylight so I wear a reflective vest and carry a small flashlight.

Hardly a fashionable or styled outfit, just about practicality and weather-appropriateness. Actually the outfit is perfect for the "social" encounters I have: 1) wave at police officer neighbor walking his police dog, 2) greet neighbor wearing a miners light while he walks his collie, or 3) wave at neighbor who is out running through the startup checklist before she drives her school bus to pick up kids. I live an exciting and enchanted life

Photos are of the brook that flows under a culvert on the road where I walk.
