Love it!
You might find that once you have a belt on, it's not the same vibe anymore. Sometimes, it's better without the belt (=lighter, less emphasis on the bottom part). I'm curious to see how this outfit will evolve.

Sterling, I also find that "tomboy" carries more emotion than "androgynous", but in a different direction. To me, it's always been a way of saying "I'm not doing feminine/ delicate/ pretty/ soft/ sweetness/ buttoned up/ perfect wrong. I have my own thing that asserts who I am". I don't skin my knees so often any more, and actually wear skirts pretty often, but I'd still call myself a tomboy. One other way I see it as different from androgynous is that androgyny can be related to gender identities, or uttered as an insult against people not performing traditional gender by traditional rules. Tomboy (to me) says clearly that those rules have been rejected. To me, a tomboy is much more robust, playful, and lusting than a girl playing by the rules of girliness could ever be. Someone to whom that kind of "girly" comes naturally would probably feel differently about it.
Runcarla, I have a somewhat similar experience. My midwestern mother is not petite or terribly fussy in what she wears, but she is traditionally feminine, and it has always been important to her that her daughters are as well. Dressing effiminately and behaving in a way that those clothes wouldn't get mussed was part of it. It was also mixed in with my older sister being a small blonde girl, whereas I was a little French pony. Besides our different builds, I was naturally not as graceful as she, because being three years younger, I wasn't at her developmental stage physically (even though we both read a few years above her grade level & I was close to her in math). When my mother/grandma/teachers sighed about me not being as coordinated as she was, I internalized it as doing "female" wrong, so the boyish behavior (including playing with cars, not dolls, and preferring basketball or fighting over jump rope and drawing with chalk) was a way of claiming my own sphere. I was in my 30s before I realized that I could be traditionally feminine if I wanted to be, and that I had a pretty decent figure. That feminine older sister now enjoys fly fishing and the like.

I wish I had hair tips, but I'm lazy/minimalist on that front. My only great epiphany was that my hair has a lot more life/volume if I don't shampoo/condition every time I shower. I do it about once a week now, and give it a couple water-only washes in between. On shampoo days, I apply a little sea salt spray to give it some oomph and piecey-ness, otherwise it lays too flat for my taste when it's freshly washed. Angie's blog post on pixie styling last week was very inspirational but I'm intimidated by flat irons

Angie -- Yes. Fab. I really like my hair this length, too. It's close to two months grown out, actually, but I like the softness around the edges and the movement/texture my bangs get at this length.

Shevia -- Blundstones are HUGE where I live, too, for both men and women. This is the first time I've worn them since the spring -- I wore them at least every other day from last October thru about April so I gave them a break over the summer. Really nice when something so functional is also well-designed and gets to have a fashion moment. :)

Runcarla -- Thank you for your story! It makes perfect sense to need to define your persona as distinct from your parents'. I think I come at tomboy style from the opposite end. I always liked dressing in boys clothes as a kid -- jeans, graphic tees (boys tees had cool things like dogs and dinosaurs and sailboats! I love that you now see more of those motifs featured in little girls clothes as well), sweaters, sneakers, etc all usually came from the boys department. I know I also liked leggings and "bike shorts" as they were known in the 90s an awful lot, so really I just wore whatever I felt like. I think I was completely unaware of what people wore until well into middle school. (My 3 yo son, on the other hand, already memorizes other people's outfits and reports them back to me -- this might be because he's watched me spend a lot of time thinking about my wardrobe in the years since he was born!)

I never actually had to do any soul searching about this. I just was never attracted to pink or lace or glitter very much. My parents were probably relieved I wasn't upholding every norm and stereotype that's been placed on little girls. I literally didn't wear anything pink, or any skirts and dresses, until I was well into high school. Then I went through an "ironic" phase, where I started adding pink accessories -- sneakers, bag, you name it -- and got really into mini skirts, polo dresses, and patterned/textured tights. So through my teens and twenties I went through a very magpie phase that involved a lot of juxtaposition of punk and prep, and a lot of gender sub/inversion. When I thru-hiked the AT, I wore a skirt (there are some great hiking skirts out there), plus a pink bandana and pink wrist-warmers, because it was really satisfying/empowering to be overtly girly in a very male-dominated environment (this was before Wild by Cheryl Strayed came out -- that book/movie has done a lot to shift backpacking demographics!).

Anyway, this capsule -- blazers, 501s, button front shirts -- is sort of like coming full-circle back to a lot of my most basic style impulses. My mother has a picture of me, preschool aged, sitting on a big rock wearing an oversized white oxford shirt and a pair of rolled up jeans. So this is definitely an authentic look for me.

RunCarla's post was fascinating. It makes so much sense to me.

I will be following these posts with great interest. I have come to realize I like the word "androgynous" much more than "tomboy." The first word evokes no emotion on my part, only interest. The second evokes quite a bit of emotion. I instantly feel that person has been insulted and I want to defend them. I have no idea where this is coming from.

I just realized that ALL challenges interest me (even if I am not participating) because I learn so much. It is like a mini-college course and the lessons are not just about wardrobe, but about life.

Love this! Side fact, Blundstones are possibly the most commonly worn shoe in Israel. For all ages, sexes, socio-economic class. I am the only family member without because I can't justify buying new shoes and they never come up for resale.
Back to you, the only non-androgynous touch is the sunglasses, but it works and you look like you, who is a woman among other things.

Late to this thread, though I shouldn't be! I DO love your outfit! You've got the perfect pixie and elfin face to compliment the look and keep it out of complete boy territory.

I will join you, and post some outfits. My androgynous looks use styling that is 'borrowed from the boys' more than actual men's wear. Although I have dabbled with men's clothes (love the shoulder width and long arms) they don't really fit my modest hour glass tendencies. Blazer, button downs, t-shirts, jeans, sneakers and brogues. If it gets cold enough, the pea coat will come out.

To answer Angie's question (for myself) I do feel my most authentic self when I dress 'Tomboy' or what you might call androgynous. I've thought about it a lot too, because some family members have commented on my style choices. It's complicated and there is some psychology behind it, though not too profound: I have a complicated relationship with a super glamourous extroverted artistic mother who places a lot of importance on looks, and how she is perceived by others, particularly men. Growing up a sporty introvert, I differentiated myself from my mother in part by adopting a different fashion persona.

I tend to avoid doing my buttons all the way up for (I think) face-shape reasons. I always feel like a closed neckline (in my case) accentuates squareness, where as a bit more of a V at the neckline lengthens the face and echoes the shape of my chin. DH, on the other hand, has a naturally long and narrow face, and looks much better in a crew neck than a v-neck. I don't think it's just because he's male because I know some guys who look very snazzy in v-necks or with a button left undone...

Actually, it might be a shoulder thing too -- I always feel like a closed neck bulks up the shoulders, while a more open one lightens up the shoulder line. I have proportionally wide shoulders, whereas DH has quite a narrow shoulder line for a guy, so, again, I think he benefits more from a closed neckline than I do.

You look great in these tomboy clothes.
I find that with a female head on top of the outfit, and with collarbone showing, outfits are quite feminine.

One of the reasons I don't like doing up my buttons all the way to the top is because it ends up looking more masculine. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just an observation.)

Here we go! One of the top reasons I do challenges is to make myself post WIWs .

Core items: Levis 501s, Blundstones, Lands End oxford shirt, Taylor Stitch field jacket

Accessories: black crossbody and rose sunnies

The accessories femme this up just enough for my taste. Begging for a belt, I know; the shirt was just a bit too long to wear untucked with this jacket. I'm going to the thrift store this weekend to see if I can find a black leather belt with silver hardware. If not, I'll probably order one from somewhere.
