I'm pear shaped so tops that fit nicely in the hips can run to big on top. I'm going to say at least 50 percent of my knit tops have been altered in some way. Especially since the world assumes plus sizes all have large chests.

A wide neckline can feel really sloppy on me. My simplest fix is putting a dart at the center back. I also have a tee-shirt that I put a pleat in the neckband at the back which pulled the deep and wide neckline up and in.

You're right - you really are your own worst critic! I think this style is lovely and flattering on you. But I totally get what you are saying about wanting to be more polished, and having certain looks that you love on yourself :)

And Shannon, that idea is GENIUS. I am going to try it with a silky blouse I own.

I totally know what you're talking about with the fleshy part of the upper back/lower neck. I am super super conscious about that as well! If I wear that type of neckline my sloped shoulders are totally emphasized. Doesn't work for me at all. What I do to rectify is wear a tank underneath, and or throw on a big scarf. I can't stand that exposure. But you are your worst critic, and personally i don't even notice this on you - I'm just so drawn to how fab the colour looks on you - and I love it with this skirt.

Too bad about the black top.

Thanks ladies!

@Rambling Ann: nope, scarves are not out of the question but I've always struggled with them, being short-necked and short waisted (the barely ever look right on me). I'm open to experimenting though!

@cinnamon fern: yeaaaah I used to have a pixie cut and was always so self conscious of my neck! High back collars are amazing for short hair! I used then to "frame" my face.

@lisa p: I need to figure out the right cami. So far, spaghetti strap and racer backs make this gorgeous top so sloppy!

@Ariadne: OMMMGGG! I love slouchy EF pants! I tried the slouchy EF pants (I don't own it.... Yet) with this top and they look amazing together! Haha! Good to find a twin!!!

@Neelie: I'm on a lookout for a high back cami. So far the camis inside looked sloppy. I will look into fashion tape.

@Peri: haha... Depending on the bra (usually black) and whether the tank top I'm layering with it works, I'm one of those women who show bra straps on purpose. Lol!!bin this instance though - showing bra straps just wouldn't work. I tried wearing the top off-shoulder assymetrical but it sort of had "princess seams" which made the top weird when lopsided.

I do recommend this top. It's perfect for a summer day and it really feels nice on the skin!

@Shannon: your solution is genius, wow! I would not have thought of weighing one side down! To answer your question though - BOTH sides slide around! Usually, the front is too low. When I sling my hobo bag on my shoulder, it's the back that moves down! I'll likely have to change my bag when wearing this, but I love shoulder bags and they are just comfy for me. Genius idea though!!!!

@Susie: indeed!

You look incredible in that blue top Katie. Question for you - you mention it being fussy. Do you find the neckline slides back on you so that you end up with more of your upper back showing and the front neckline being too high up? The reason I ask is my BCBG blush blouse did that and it drove me CRAZY! So I took a small weighted fishing lure (you know the little metal "doo-dads you attach to your fishing line to give it weight when you cast it into the water?) and attached it to the front inside of my blouse with a safety pin just at the front placket (I think that's what it's called). It's pinned at the seam of the placket and you don't see a thing. But it gives the front of the blouse just a wee bit of weight to keep it from sliding backwards. Then I just unpin it when laundering and reattach after. I don't know if that will work with this blouse but thought I'd mention it.

It's interesting the things we find to worry about in ourselves that no one else ever notices! I can promise no one looking at you is thinking, wow she should cover that neck! But if you are uncomfortable, that's what matters. I would not care a flip about that showing on me, but would be very bothered if it moves around like you say and slips over to show a bra strap. And yet some women show bra straps on purpose. We are all very odd.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions that haven't already been made. But if that top ever shows up on the for sale page I will be so tempted!

I love that blue top. Can you use some fashion tape to hold it in place a bit, maybe higher on the back? I think it looks great as is, but that might make it feel more secure.
Or perhaps a high-backed cami?

I love the blue too - such a gorgeous colour on you! Would a tank or cami in a knit worn underneath help keep the top in place? I find that the shoulders on a knit tank/cami grip wide necklines on sweaters nicely.

I have this problem with super-open necklines too. I'll like the way it looks head on, and then see that from another angle I just have way too much neck. Fullback crossed with giraffe.

But, I have short hair! For you, just wearing your hair down seems like a perfect solution (perfect partly because it's so easy).

Thank you ladies!

I was sad to see that the EF top is no longer in Hautelook/Nordstrom Rack in the size that I want. I found it on eBay for $40 more, but in the right size. I'm definitely going for it because I really like it.

@Suz: I definitely need structure and drape combined. I know I definitely get it right when i have a topper on, but without one, it's very tricky. And Shannon and Deborah are definitely Fabbers I watch: Shannon for the silhouettes and Deborah primarily because I aspire to have a similar style aesthetic (mine just tends to have bold colours and print).

The blue top is very fussy. The neckline moves around a lot that there's just way too much exposed skin. I tried a lettering effect but the tank top takes the beauty away from the top itself!

What a shame about the EF -- I can tell it would look really good on you in the right size. I agree with JayS -- stalk it!

You really are your worst critic, because I love the blue top on you! I don't see any problem with the exposed skin at your neckline and I'm sure the back looks nice, too. But I do know that tops with that type of neckline can feel slip-slidy and that can be annoying! And so maybe more is exposed as you move. That might account for feeling a bit disheveled, too.

It seems as if you are looking for a balance between drape and structure. As always, Shannon's a great guide for this. Another one to watch is Deborah. The kinds of pieces that work for them might also work for you.

That blue was meant for you. I see no problem with the top, but I know what you mean about the top back being exposed. I have some tops that do that too. When it bothers me, I use a scarf to cover.
The EF top would be a good one to stalk. If you know the style name, look for it on Amazon or Ebay. Might take a little time, but sometimes you can score. Good luck!

I know a few of you like this top on me - and I can't deny that it's beautiful - gorgeous! I love the way it drapes and I love the colour...

... But....

I've never felt anywhere close to fabulous in any of the outfits I've worn this top. I don't understand because:
- I have absolutely NO muffin top showing
- it's comfy
- it's gorgeous

And yet, I feel sloppy and had to fuss a lot. Why?

While I was at the subway, I noticed the back of my neck and shoulders in the reflection. It looked too... Hmm... Unflattering... At least with this top. About 2 inches of the area from the base of the neck down the back was exposed and I didn't like it.

Suddenly it clicked: THIS is why I love jackets with a high back neck! Because it hid that very fleshy area and somehow elevated my look! This is also why I grew my hair from a pixie cut of five years - I didn't have tops that covered that fleshy area!

I also disliked how there's too much fleshy space on the front neckline. I feel that I need to divide that space up more to feel less sloppy. This is why I LOVE v-necks and I don't often love wide and deeper necklines.

Instead of purging, I want to keep this top. After all, everything works except the back neckline. So here are my thoughts of styling it:
- wear my hair down
- if I wear my hair up, wear a long multi-strand necklace. This takes care of the front fleshy neckline problem too
- wear a kimono/dolman tunic length jacket (I don't have one but it's in my list)

I know that at I'm my own worst critic and little things just get me riled up over my style sometimes. I really just aim to polish my look and elevate my style. I keep looking mildly disheveled so I have to find a way to add more polish.

#1-2: today's WIW

TOP: Babaton
Skirt: Vince Camuto
Shoes: Naot

#3-5 EF open knit sweater

I was so excited to get this in the mail. I tried it on and sadly, it's going back. I tried this top on previously in a small and it was just the right amount of fluidity and length. Because Hautelook/Nordstrom Rack was out of Smalls, I got a Petite Medium. It's tiny. You can see it slightly clings to my body. I wanted a slouchier, more fluid fit. I'm really really disappointed because I was hoping to wear the top soon .

Oh well. Better luck next time.
