Thanks, lovely ladies!

@ladywone: the only difference the string makes is that the string actually hikes the skirt up so that it's mini-length. It does make the skirt cling closer to the body but accidental (hiking up) mishaps can potentially happen, especially since I walk everywhere. The skirt is still tapered close to the body so it's not a huge problem.

I think I also agree with Neel; let the skirt shine. It has such gorgeous colours! I would be soooo annoyed too with the tugging of strings.

Love seeing your new stuff

I was also going to say that the top makes the skirt looks heavy. A lighter top would bring it forward into spring/summer. i love the vest and skirt on you. By cutting the strings do you notice a difference?

@Neel: I think what I struggle with most is what to wear on top and whether or not it reflects my style. The print is definitely my kind of print, but this is not my usual frock + jacket formula. I tried on a tunic length black summer sweater with this and it worked.

I wish I can find some lightweight toppers or fluid tops to go with this. But yeah - skirts are something I've shunned for YEARS, so I'm no longer used to wearing them.

I think it looks good as is, with slight preference without the vest. Pretty skirt and gorgeous color on you. The vest is lovely, but probably not together with the skirt.

Don't stress the skirt. Let it shine by keeping everything simple. Which is why I think a simple plain white/blue/navy/black fluid top will look lovely with this. If you need a topper, keeping the texture plain will help I think. A black/white blazer?

A statement necklace over the tee and you are ready to rock :). I think both your purchases are lovely. Have fun!

Thanks Aubergine!

I do have a navy top that goes with this skirt. It's sleeveless, though and I try not to wear sleeveless items to work (comfort level and professionalism).

I'm a little lost at making this skirt/separates thing work, actually and I'm not sure if I'm regretting my purchase. I've tried the loose tunic on it but I'm not sure if it works on me or illustrates my style. I'm still the frockstar girl, I guess, but I have a distinct long over lean style as well. I really wish I can make this work or I've just made a set of mistake purchases again

Really like the skirt! I'm not a vest person at all, so I have a hard time judging whether it works, but I almost want to see a little more unification between the black on top and the blues on the bottom. Maybe a necklace with some blue in it, or a navy top instead of black? The blue tunic also sounds like a great combo!

Thanks Echo!

You're right about the top/vest, I really had a feeling it was off. This is a fitted top and I ONLY wear them in black due to self-consciousness (enormous belly/waist). I had some looser tunic tops, but I'm not sure how they'll work with the vest. I guess we will have to see. I'm terrified of going light on top due to my much larger upper body + slim legs

I think the top reads as too heavy, both with the darker colour and the vest on top. The vest might've worked with a lighter top, or the top may have worked without the vest, but together they read fall/winter while the skirt reads summer. But the colours on the skirt are beautiful, and I hope it works better throughout the day with the connectors clipped.

Yeah I was so drawn to the pattern. Oddly enough I have 3 items with that similar "blue water" pattern! I must really like it!

I tried on my blue tunic (from my previous WIW) with the skirt and it worked beautifully!

And you're right about the sleeves - I think it could use some scrunching!

Your skirt's pattern reminds me of waves rippling in a blue summer lake--so beautiful-- and I really like the vest, too. I wonder how the outfit would look with a lighter-colored and/or shorter-sleeved shirt. Maybe a deep blue to pick up the skirt's blue? You might also try scrunching the sleeves on your black shirt.

Yay for rule breakers!!!! :)

I had a feeling those proportions were off! At least for a fitted top! I tried a tunic top with a hi-Lo hemline on this and it looked fine!

And yeah the pesky strings... Ugh! You'll notice how "hiked up" my skirt is on one side? I've been pulling that thing down ALL DAY!

As someone who breaks the rule in my late 40's by wearing above the knee skirts, I would wear a shorter top to give it better proportions..Love the bright vibrant blues in that skirt and smart of you to cut those pesky strings..

I was posing... Or at least trying do I at least get an E for Effort?

The outfit: I felt ok. Decent. Not 100% WOW for the following reasons:

1. Is it me, or are the proportions on this outfit off? I'm particularly concerned about the length of the top and the vest. Is the black top too heavy-looking perhaps? Am I being unusually hard on myself again (grrr body dysmorphia)?

2. My skirt keeps hiking up all day. It's ANNOYING! Later, I discovered why: the main fabric has a string connected to the lining so it has that "theatre curtain drawing up" effect. I cut off the strings when I got home and I could see why the designer did this, but I really don't mind getting rid of that "curtain up" effect. The hem still tapers close to my body and is slightly above the knee - just how I like it.

3. The vest's collar is all over the place. I've had to take a few shots so that it's more flattering.

And yup - the vest and the skirt are part of yesterday's spoils. Yay!

Top: Cable & Gauge
Vest: W118 by Walter Baker
Skirt: Catherine by Catherine Maladrino
Shoes: Aravon
