With many of my outfits I'm really not sure if the casual viewer will realize "slouchy" as opposed to "sloppy", and often those slouchy look do require a lot of fiddling to add the right amount of structure back in. Here's a very&nbsp;long answer for you:</p> <p>I'm not sure I have a good answer about trying&nbsp;and knowing right away if something is working, unfortunately. The bulk of my slouchy and oversized things are that way due to my shrinking out of them or sizing to fit my shoulders, and since slouchy is trendy I figured I could put off replacing those pants for a while. I will say that now that slouchy is so very mainstream I am eternally frustrated with&nbsp;getting fits that I like.</p> <p>I am less picky about denim weight but am VERY picky about stretch. I have found that I highly&nbsp;dislike the slouchy effect with my stretchy denim, and much prefer the look with the very lightweight and not-too-stretchy jeans instead (or in the case of my BF jeans, zero stretch). These olive pants are a thin cotton twill with just a wee bit of stretch, so I'm OK with them being slouchier. Soft and thin fabrications feel best for slouchy jeans to me, except in the case of BF jeans. Trousers are a whole other story, I'm picky about everything there </p> <p>As for telling whether or not they "work", it's hard to determine that in isolation. I have to consider specific pieces I'd pair with them, or at the very very least the ways that I would need to style and add structure in order to feel comfortable. For example, with my slouchy lightweight wide leg trousers, I know that <i>in general</i> I will be happiest pairing tops that can be tucked, semi-tucked, or that are borderline-cropped or hi-low; nearly any other style is going to feel too unstructured. Of course, I'll experiment with other things but I do try to have some guidelines in my head. Otherwise the piece won't get worn, because I'll feel grumpily sloppy instead of happily slouchy.</p> <p>I haven't needed nor tried to purchase purposefully slouchy skinnies, but I have a hunch that buying a pair that actually fits you in a size (or two)&nbsp;up is the way to go, especially if there is fading that is done well; they'll have volume in ways that don't add anything odd to you, because they mirror your shape. The pants will look like something you've just had a long time that have eased up. At least, that's the look I go for.
