Natalie, I am pretty sure you look twice as fab as me, so I am a little surprised by your comment. I was actually thinking though to put together a post about what has worked for me because I found this kind of thing from other people in the archive helpful when I was trying to figure out what to do. I have also been reading the ones about nursing style, as that sounds flummoxing just when I am so looking forward to wearing my old things again. I get feeling bad about buying new things, but there are really a lot of cheap thrills out there to be had. Admittedly it's a bit harder if you need to look really professional. Why not buy one of those gorgeous Isabella Oliver dresses? You would get lots of wear out of it in the next months, I would think. Surely that's worth it? You have got to be nice to yourself too. It's not easy everything you are juggling right now! Also your style has probably evolved since your last pregnancy, so maybe you just need a few key things to pep up what you have. BTW, that kind of compliment about if you were to see me IRL is the biggest compliment to me. Thanks.

I like to think of those judgements as just one part of our brain working hard to protect us. When we are not in danger then it's up to the other part to take over (like yours did) & see the bigger picture. Love the outfit.

Great outfit Scarlet, thanks for posting! You are such an inspiration. So elegant. I wish I could look half as fab as you...you make maternity dressing look so effortless! Angie is right, you are Queen Killer Maternity Style. I wish you would post a recap and some tips--I went back through your WIWs but all the pictures are hidden now. Meanwhile I'm struggling with growing out of my non-maternity wardrobe and dreading pulling out my old maternity clothes because I'm worried they'll be dated, and feel guilty about buying any new maternity clothes because this is my last baby. Gah.

I totally get what you mean about pre-judging people based on what they wear. I'm glad you gave her a chance though. I sometimes worry about being judged myself by other more casual looking moms, because I now tend to be on the dressier side since I joined YLF. But the funny thing is, when I look closer at these casual yoga pants moms they're wearing Lululemon and Prada sunglasses and Tory Burch flip-flops and carrying Chloe and Marc Jacobs bags. So they're wearing even more designer stuff than I am! So it just goes to show you can't always judge by appearances!

I think if I saw you IRL though, I'd say "wow, that's someone I want to get to know better!" You're both super stylish and approachable!

Great look.
I'm sure there are times, lots of times when I'm judged by my clothes. I tend to be more judgemental towards those that are dressed poorly. This is not my nicer side.

You look really lovely Scarlet, and I'm so glad you are rocking those fierce boots! The column of black with an open sweater is a great idea for dressing right now.

I'm glad you got to speak with the woman with the Miu Miu bag. Sometimes judgements fall away once a conversation gets going. I often assume someone is out of my league and wouldn't have any interest in talking to me based on his or her wealthy appearance, but most of the time I am happily proven wrong. When I'm in a situation with poorer women (that can't be PC, economically challenged?), I try to be the first to strike up a conversation so that they'll realize that I'm friendly and not a snob.

You are Queen KILLER Maternity Style!

Scarlet, judging people cannot be helped. Recognizing that you misjudged is always a good thing. It's never to late to see the good in people.

Your knee jerk reaction to *visible* designer labels is something you are sensitive to, and have mentioned a few times before. That's what got you going, I think. These days teens carry designer labels too and who knows how they acquired them as there are a billion ways. It's all okay

BJ, you put it so well about people’s judgements. Re: the clothes, yes, I have been honestly really pleasantly surprised by the H&M Mama line. They cut well and the quality is quite passable for the price. Most things available are pretty basic/classic, but there are always a couple of things to acknowledge the current trends.

Dianthus, personally I hope to keep wearing this look (the basic idea at least) post-partum (such a funny word, by the way).

Jjsloane, thanks, I am doing well all things considered, but I am really looking forward to the finish line at this point!

Regarding this other woman, now I really hope that I meet her again. She had the most beautiful outfit, actually. I really must have been hormonal or hungry or something. *winking at Deborah* I was hungry actually. That really does turn me into a monster these days.

As Janet said, we all make some internal judgements based on external triggers. I've been trying to train myself to turn each negative into a positive in some way. When I see someone in ill fitting item and think "oh no" I try to find something good like "that color is great on her".

I wasn't originally going to post this because the photo quality is not so great, but there was a request to show the outfit, and I suppose you can get the idea well enough. Ironically, OTKs turn out to be great maternity shoes because you don't have to bend over much to get them on :)

1.) Inspiration--this cardigan has a light metallic silver sheen that doesn't show so well in the photos.

2.) Interpretation--I wanted to wear a column of black. I chose a dress because I was going to a couple of daytime parties. For the second party I wanted to change into something more dressy (lace pencil skirt, fine knit maroon top, and sharp black blazer), but due to time constraints it wasn't possible. This is just a simple maternity T-dress from H&M with some rusching on the sides. Frankly I don't have many options at the moment and don't want to spend much money on things now. I felt really good in this, though. I think the photo doesn't do it justice.

3.) the components, since you can't see them that well. I used to only wear fine jewelry, but have been experimenting with costume jewelry, especially chunkier pieces like the bracelet since pregnancy.

An aside: at the first party I was seated next to a gal who was also expecting only two weeks later than I am. When I saw her come in the door, my heart sank because I thought she looked like a total snob--lovely, but designer everything with effete husband in tow (and beautiful toddler). She turned out to be a sweetheart, though, and now I am left to question why I was so judgmental. I was thinking is this what people mean when they want to look "approachable", something Angie has mentioned is a concern of many of her clients. Ironically I judged this woman for carrying a Miu Miu bag, even though my boots are Miu Miu (they just don't say so). In general I don't own designer things, but for a couple of items I have my reasons. Why should I make assumptions about other people? Then I have to question if in other circumstances people make these assumptions about me. Anyway.

ETA: Thinking more about this now and reading your comments, I think there were a couple of things going on. One was, before I saw this woman I was looking forward to meeting her because I thought we would have a lot in common based on what the hostess had told me. Then when I saw her, I think she strongly reminded me of a certain social circle I knew from college--think really spoiled Gossip Girl types, even though to be totally fair about that, plenty of those people were perfectly nice, just not the one I had to live with once--and then I was really disappointed. Also, let be known, I have nothing against Miu Miu bags. I would love to have one, personally. I just meant it was like a little thing that fit in with my overall first negative impression of her, but was kind of an odd thing for me to focus on. Anyway, thanks for your generosity with me about being so judgmental. You are right, the main thing is to keep an open mind even if you are having an instinctive reaction to someone and to wait it out. I am sure I have been on both sides of this equation. Haven't we all.
