I think a dark grey crew neck would be perfect under it when worn closed. Enough contrast to show the vest but not compete with it.
It's a very flattering piece.

Thank you everyone for the comments and suggestions. Looks the consensus is for open!

Tina, I really like the idea of wearing it over a tank top but it is kind of thick. Maybe on a day where it's hot but I'll be spending a lot of time indoors? It would let me wear it over more of the year too. Thanks!

Suz and everyone, a lower contrast top is probably the best way to go. I realized that I don't think I own a single solid black winter top! Wardrobe hole? But I do own a few in a darker charcoal gray, so that might be a good start.

Naz, this is the only floral item I own, because I often find them overwhelming.

Marilyn, your suggestion of plaid is another good one, thanks! And dresses, ooh!

Love your vest. I like it open in look #1.
I bought a black faux shearling vest this winter and have been playing around with looks. My favourite is layered over a long sleeved black tee for a low contrast and unfussy look. It also works over an untucked plaid shirt with black in it. And I like it over a long sleeved black dress as well.

I just LOVE outfit #1 with the vest open. Great buy! Not sure about it closed, but it's so fab open.

I like the moto vest on you and it looks fine both open and zipped up. I do like the hint of floral print on the 3d photo..

I don't see any issues with the length of the vest in 1 and 2. I like it open best but would absolutely wear it zipped for warmth. Like the suggestion of trying it with a lower contrast top, particularly for zipped. Well done!

You look warm and cosy for your chilly office. I like all the suggestions above for how to wear the tunic. They need to sort out that heating!

I like how your specs pick up the green in the print in your shirt - very nice indeed.

I like both outfits! I like the vest both open and closed, but I find open more flattering with this light gray layer underneath. I second Suz's idea of trying a lower-contrast top for layering under the vest closed. I love pieces that can be worn different ways for quite different looks, like this one! The long cardigan over blouse is terrific with your boots. The print on the blouse adds a lot of interest.

The vest looks terrific open! I also approve of it closed for warmth purposes, LOL. I am not sure what to suggest for styling it closed; maybe a lower contrast top underneath would allow you to wear it that way when you want to?

I have found my long cardigans really useful this season, too. It surprised me, because I'm much more of a jacket person. But these were a fun change.

I like the open version of the two vest outfits. Number 3 looks perfectly casual, I love printed blouses!
Just thinking out loud here, I was looking at the closed vest and wondering how it would look as a sleeveless top (for summer of course!), with a tank top underneath that was peaking out at the bottom. With a skirt or straight or skinny jeans? Or is it too heavy?

The heat in my office has been sporadic lately, either too hot or too cold, and this was a cold week. The plan has been lots of warm layers so here a few outfits from this week.

1/2) Worn to work and to go to a doctor's appointment. I bought this knit moto vest on clearance this summer and like it, but struggle with styling it. When worn closed, I'm not sure what length top to wear underneath. But worn open, I feel the length of the vest is a little long. Both options shown below, and preferences or styling suggestions are welcome!
Sweater - Athleta, Vest - Halogen, Jeans - JCrew, Boots - Timblerland

3) Worn to work for several meetings today. I like to look a little more put together than for when I just sit in front of a computer all day. The shirt is one of my only three button-downs, which have never really been "me", but I do like the print. And the long cardigan is one of my favorite purchases of the season.
Top - Loft, Sweater - Karen Millen, Jeans - JCrew, Boots - Timberland.

Thanks for looking!
