I would not say they're terribly soft or cushiony, but nothing rubbed or irritated my foot, and that's pretty notable for a flat with an ankle strap in my book. One thing to note: the ankle strap closes with a strip of velcro and then slips under the metal holders, which are mainly just for show. I actually like this because it allows you to get the ankle fit just right, but it's a little tricky at first.
