What a fun post, Janet! The sweater is fantastic - the colors, the argyle, the slightly cropped length - it is a perfect fit on you and the back buttoning is a great hack. I never would have thought to do that, but it may give new life to some of my cardigans.

I have a collection of Swarovski holiday brooches from the late 1980s through the early aughts. My DH bought them for me over the years. I still wear them every holiday season. The best part of wearing them is that they evoke memories of the early years of my marriage and early years of practice after law school.

I enjoy sentimental items and appreciate all of the stories and photos.

I bought a lot for Mom but she was very specific in her wants and I did not save anything. She had laundry done at a nursing home and wanted things that would disguise her sloping shoulders. Usually a pattern worked best to disguise food spills as she tried very hard to feed herself. I did not keep anything. . She grow up when women wore dresses and would wear them in spite of a wheelchair. It was I chore getting her to wear joggers, she thought it looked silly to wear them when she could not jog.

It looks like a great color on you! Very pretty. I don't know that I have any items like that, but my mother always made a point of wearing/using every present she got, no matter how ugly.

Maybe 20 or 30 years ago, her mother-in-law (my grandma) made her a crafted sweatshirt--a white, crew neck sweatshirt with a cross-stitch pattern of a cartoon jogger, and cross-stitch bubble letters that said: "jogger." I still remember my father cracking up, and her going, "what? It's lovely." And then she would wear it when she ran.:)

Suz, how lovely to wear that sweater set — and yes, the trick is always to find our own current way of enjoying these items! I think I figured that out this time. My mom’s and my tastes intersected but after two decades my style has evolved. It can be tricky.

Dee, that blazer is classic and suits you so well! So nice that you still enjoy it.

Angie, what a lovely cheerful piece — I can see why it is treasured and displayed. I have a few kitchen and decor items from my parents that float around and are displayed, often seasonal. This red glass jar comes out for the holidays and holds candies.

Janet, I love fair isle and that looks so cuddly, and the cord jacket is also really appealing. Orange is not my best color either, but I’d wear that too if I were you!

Kyle, Sharan and Lisa, thank you! My husband liked it on me too.

Irina, what a shame the beret color doesn’t suit you. But it is nice to have something physical to attach to the memories. I had a striped rugby shirt of my dad’s — I actually wore it for years until it got pretty tattered and I decided I could give it up. He died when I was 25, and it was a shock and my first real loss, so wearing something of his was a help in a very tough time in my young adulthood.

Jaime, I figured you have some good “vintage” pieces even if they’re not sentimental. You have the best finds!

Brooklyn, I love that you have those pieces from your mom, and how special they were made with love. I know you treasure them!

Sisi, it’s remarkable how well made these things from 20+ years ago can be, compared to now. I can’t believe that simple cotton hoodie from the 80s that my mom wore is still going strong after all the washings. This sweater is missing the tag — I removed it the first time I wore it backwards years ago — but I recall it was from Macys and think it was one of their house brands, but I can’t recall the name. Enjoy that jacket!

Lisa, thanks — the pairing with the jeans made it really work for me.

Cookie, what a great story and a beautiful bracelet!

Jenni, that’s such a pretty necklace — I’m glad you get to wear it! Vintage coats are SO good and well made, so it’s disappointing to inherit one that doesn’t fit. I had a beautiful one from my grandmother, but she must have been a bit shorter than me with a very different build because it did not work for me at all. I eventually let it go to a new home rather than see it get eaten by moths. I have two old, rather worn coats my mom used to walk her dogs, and I’m going to have the fabric made into something else one of these days! One is a teddy coat and not quite right in the fit but I’d like to use it somehow. I saw a mixed media tote recently that was made from part leather (or maybe faux leather) and part faux fur, and that gave me ideas! I have a friend who designs handbags with reclaimed and recycled material.

You look wonderful in this Janet, it suits you so well.
I don’t think I can fit my fave sentimental item of Mum’s, it’s her 1964 red wool coat. It could be even earlier than that but I have a photo of the two of us in 1964 when I was 3. I first borrowed it from her when I was 21 and have always loved the rich red colour.
But I do still fit her (fake) “opal” necklace! I had it fixed and enjoy wearing it.

Loving everybody’s sentimental clothes, especially your beautiful sweater, Janet!
I am quite sentimental AND I keep things forever, yet I can’t think of any sentimental clothing offhand. But my most sentimental item is this jade bracelet that was the first gift my grandfather gave my grandmother.
They met on board a ship when neither was especially young. When they went ashore at a port somewhere, he pointed out the bracelet in a shop and asked if she thought it was an appropriate gift for a lady. She, crushed but unsurprised to think he had a girlfriend at home, said she thought any woman would be thrilled to receive it and he said he was happy to hear that because he wanted her to have it. They were married a month later and she gave me the bracelet on my 15th or 16th birthday in what I always took as a wish for me to be lucky in love as well (which I was eventually, but like her, not till well over 30).
She was actually pretty unaffectionate (except to my grandfather, whom she adored for the rest of their days), so this makes her sound like a warmer and cuddlier grandma than she was, but maybe that makes the item all the more sentimental! I wear it to weddings to extend the lucky streak to the couple.

Thanks, everyone! I enjoyed wearing it and promised myself I’d break it out more often. I think it works better now than in some years past because it suits the higher-rise wide-legged jeans.

So lovely to see and read about favorite sentimental items! I have just a few clothing items from my mom - I also have a skirt that is wearable but a bit boho for my current style. And I have a white cotton pullover hoodie that she wore at the beach 40+ years ago that I wear around the house in warm weather! I also have some of her gloves, a hat, and some scarves, as well as a lot of her jewelry. I’m quite sentimental!

That's a beautiful cardi! It is eviden that it is very well made, the fit is perfect and you look fab in it! Being a sentimental person, I have various old things I still wear. One example for all - a white cotton jacket that my mother brought home for me in the early Nineties. It does not button anymore but every Summer I take it out. It is soft, very well made and still looks like new after hundreds of machine washings.

I LOVE this bowl. It's absolutely perfect, and has travelled the world with us since we've lived across the globe. It's an extremely sentimental item. It has pride of place in our kitchens. I had to bring it with us to the rental, and not put it into storage while we remodel. Comforting. Took this pic a moment ago.

I still wear a sweater set that I bought for my own mother at Land's End -- not 20 years ago, but a good 15 years ago. It was one of the few items I kept from her closet after she died. She loved it and wore it well and now I try to wear it my own way.

Carla’s recent post about making beloved items work brought to mind this sweater. It’s not an easy item for me — the greens are more brown-olive toned and not my best (cool bluer greens are), and it’s a cardigan. I am not a cardigan person! But… my mom bought it for me on a shopping day in Macy’s probably 20 years ago. I’m actually amazed it still fits, considering I am a good 15 lbs heavier now than I was then. If I turn it around and wear the button side in front, it gapes at the bust, but turned backwards I don’t have any issue with the fit. It’s even a good length. I love an off-kilter argyle — one that is not 100% classic in color, cut, or pattern, so I’ve held onto this for years. I only wear it maybe once a year or so, but I’ll probably keep it forever, it’s so sentimental.

Paired it with my Nili Lotan Celia jeans and Gentle Souls brown suede booties. When I go out for errands I’ll add the Avec les Filles olive faux leather trench.

Do you wear any 20-year-old sentimental items? I only have a few but they do bring me comfort and happiness.
