I really like the black and white outfit and the one with the olive jacket. I keep a nice black and a nice white cardigan in my office for temperature fluctuations. That way one of them almost always goes with my outfit. I don't use old cardigans because I want to still feel put together even if it's not really part of my outfit. I've also phased out most of my grey items. It's not a good color for me and it makes me feel drab.

Thanks everyone! I’ve been sick with a cold and not replying.

cindysmith, thank you, I like wearing jackets this time of year. I am glad I realized I could get more use out of them because my office is so cold.

JAileen, I was super comfy in that outfit, too!

The Cat and Jussie, I Iove red too. I hope to incorporate more in my wardrobe. It’s been hard to find my preferred shades of red in stores. But that seems to be changing.

My favourites are 1, 4 and 8. Because:
1: You look gorgeous in red. (This outfit will also look great with a white or black long topper.)
4: A column of colour worn with a long jacket in a different colour is an excellent concept for you, and your wear black so well. (By the way, I am sure that long toppers in other colours--like purple, cobalt blue, teal and white--will also look great over your black column of colour.)
8: The blue & white blouse with slim black trousers makes this a very pretty outfit with gamine vibes.

Angie- thank you! I will tinker with which tops to pair with the pants. I won't buy anything to make an outfit I feel works, but I'm open to keeping them if I find a few things I already have that work better. I didn't like wearing them with sneakers to commute, and I'll keep that in mind too.

Karen - I have a ton of booties, but I need to assess their comfort levels and whether they need insoles. Many have a bit of a heel, so I hope to be able to wear most of them. I loved adding bootcuts back to my wardrobe last year.

Sooooo insurance cut off my PT sessions. BOO. I know how to do all the exercises, and can keep adding reps and intensity. Since I do research for a living, I've been reading up on what kinds of stuff I can do on my own. My prognosis at the end of PT was that I'd improve as I get stronger, but I seem to have plateaued. That could be a coincidence, as I've plateaued a few times. Or it could be that I'm really missing the stim and the body work (plus the PT's adjustments to my exercise routine).

I am wearing the SI belt again, because part of the problem is that the hip on the affected side has been out of whack. I think the belt helps with that, but not so much the actual back pain (I think the joint is not mobile enough, rather than too mobile, and so doesn't need to held in. The hip benefits from being held in a bit, especially since I tend to be duck footed, anyway, which I think is a big contributor to this injury.)

You look fab in all! 4 is my absolute favorite. As weather turns, do you have some comfortable boots to swap to? The bootcut trend is going to be your friend! You rock them.

Sorry your back continues to be uncooperative. Based on 30+ years of low back problems, anything you can do to strengthen abs, stretch hamstrings, it band, pirformis, and quads will be time well spent. How’s the PT going?

Kathie - nope, I have wider crops that I do like, such as the ones posted here. My eye isn't the problem, but the less fluid fabrication might be. Or that I didn't like the top with it. I also added another possible explanation in the comments, above, about the shoes I commuted in.

I am putting it in the holding zone until I pull out more fall clothes and figure out which tops might work with it. I may have better luck with a knit, for instance, if I have any that aren't too long. I am short waisted, so finding tops that actually look a bit cropped on me is a challenge, and tucking has mixed results a lot of the time.

Great outfits! It's been fun to see your style evolve. #4 is my favorite- you look so confident and polished in the boot cuts. Not sure what's going on with the trousers in 6/7. Your other pants seem more fitted through the lower leg. Is that the case? Perhaps it's just an adjustment for your eye?

Mirjana - thank you! That's a big compliment, since you look so fab in white bottoms, too. Now that Angie has converted me to white bottoms, I hope to roll them into my wardrobe outside the warmer months, too.

SarahDB - YES I am actually searched for a more fabulous wrap. I am also looking at vest options.

Runcarla - the pants are a kind of mid-grey, not olive.

La Pedestrienne - I am considering adding a wrap and also this vest that someone here put into Finds. Not too delicate but kind of fab anyway. I agree that the grey pants need some other top than the one I used (I ended up leaving the house because I had run out of time.) agree that the stripe option is a snooze, though it works. I will see what other tops I have when I pull out more of my fall clothes.

Another reason the grey pants may have bugged me: I wore them to work on a rainy day with my athletic sneakers, which I need to walk in on days when I'm planning wearing flats at work (can't walk in pavement in the plats anymore). That combo wasn't fab - I didn't expect it to be, but it might have influenced how I felt about the pants, since it's what I wore when I did the most moving in them.

Nice round-up of outfits. #3 is tops, but that dress in #2 is very pretty too. It sounds like you need some dedicates work toppers. Like SarahD8 says, maybe a new shawl in a colour that makes you happy? Or some sort of fleecy faux-shearling topper? Those seem to be all over the place right now and look both very cozy and low-maintenance. I can understand not wanting to wear a long wooly cardigan all the time.

The pants look fine to me, but I agree that sailor pants plus boho top does seem off somehow. I had a pair of sailor pants for awhile (returned them because the linty fabric drove me crazy), and I actually dislike wearing them with breton tops -- felt too predictable. Band tees, or other graphic tops, were a good bet. If you need something less casual, what about a top that's more feminine, but less boho: A pussy bow or tie neck blouse? A silky shell? A t-shirt style top in a luxe fabric (like velvet or satin)? Just some ideas, not sure if any of them match your existing wardrobe...

What a great set of outfits! I like the look of those fuller cropped pants, so I'm sorry they aren't working for you. Navy and olive are a match made in fashion heaven, so you might like to reconsider. Maybe do a a trial with some different tops and footwear from your closet and post for a styling advice workshop?

Re: your work warmth dilemma, how about treating yourself to a pretty olive cashmere shawl? I’d bet the old gray shawl is feeling especially un-fab since you are trying to rotate that color out of your wardrobe. But something in your new chosen neutral could be just the ticket. A shawl/wrap could also have a nice boho-lite vibe.

Meredith - these are the pants, FYI. I have a lot of blues in my wardrobe, but I really only like it styled with a striped top, like in the photo. Maybe mixing with one of my more boho lite patterned tops was the problem. Anyway, I've put them in the holding zone for now.

I have been lurking here but there’s not been much time for posting. I have been tending to and thinking about my wardrobe for Fall, even so.

I have to focus on shoes, for reasons I’ve beaten to death in other posts (short version is that back problems have changed my shoe needs). I’m also trying to add things strategically to fit current trends AND my mood. The former are easy to discern. The latter—not so much.

I think I know I want to cycle our grey as a neutral and keep adding olive. I’m also on a search for more midi length dresses and skirts. Otherwise, I think I want to continue moving in a more sophisticated direction, with boho lite touches. (I also like harder edged pieces in winter.) I’m eclectic, though, so it’s hard to narrow down what this all means for me in practical terms.

Another practical issues - in warmer fall days, when I wear lighter tops, I end up freezing at work because my mid weight toppers aren’t working. I end up throwing an old grey shawl or my work logo fleece over everything, thus ruining any attempt to curate my ensemble. I’m not ready to throw a heavy, long cardi on every day, though.

Anyway, on to the outfits. (Sans shawl or fleece.)

1- I don’t often get to wear this tee, because I always have to cover the arm detail at work. It was on my Wear My Orphans project. I’m keeping it and trying to think about wearing it even with the sleeves covered.

2. The dress here is sleeveless but I like the colors for Fall.

3. My attempt at a black and white outfit, on one of the warmer days. The gingham top is an orphan but because it has tassels I have coming out of the shoulders. They are fussy and always get untied. I will probably cut them off.

4. Kind of a monochrome outfit under that jacket, which is unusual for me. Brought out my bootcuts.

5. This is today’s outfit. New olive pants and clogs, with and older tops and topper. This feels like the first real fall outfit

6-7 - What do we think of these pants? I kept and cropped them further after advice here last year, but I just don’t feel fab in them. I like wide crops, so it’s not that. Is it this color, or maybe the fabrication (not flowy)? I don’t know. Grey feels less fab to me nowadays, though it used to be a go-to neutral for me. Anyway I may pass these pants on, as I have enough items that I love and can dress more easily. (Styling something difficult would be easier for an item I love.) I will probably not be buying much grey in the future and letting it cycle out. I’ve noticed already that I passed on all my grey cardis, which used to be a go-to item for me. I may make an exception for a grey patterned tweed jacket though.

8 - Boden blouse and jeans. A FFBO combo for me.

ETA - 9 and 10 are better pics of today’s outfit. My boss thought I looked like I’m going out tonight. This plus 3-4 at emu faves of this bunch.
