After my long exile to Florida, I’m a contrarian to all you “deep winter blues” people! You can do a bunch of crew neck sweaters if you want, but you can do so much else too! I think big chunky sweaters will look great on you, TG, and I’m looking forward to seeing the sweatshirts. Don’t forget all the shapes you can wear—welted or not, various lengths, cardis with/without lapels....

The one place I will concede ground to you all is that it takes so much longer to get dressed for the cold! Putting a layer under a floaty blouse means putting on twice as many pieces, and then a jacket too, ayyiyi. It was funny, in a mean kind of way, to watch my son slowly realize what a pita that is, and that he has to get up earlier to account for it. But he lives the cooler weather, and hopes for snow.

@Suntiger, my daughter once said she was going to be a scientist AND a fashion designer, so that should design a fabric that would look like spring/fall clothing but work for deep winter. I hope she sticks to that plan!!

I'm in deep winter denial too! They need to make clothes that look like dressy workwear on the outside but have cozy fleece linings! May just get a really warm coat and make it do all the work.

Suntiger, thanks and yes - definitely 'deep winter' needs more thought than I've ever given it (denial?? lol) .... as outerwear logistics need to be accommodated!

Karen, thank you and yes! It was therapeutic to say good-bye to a few things, get a few bob back and feel good about supporting the 're-use' economy As for tucking - I literally just shove the front into the waistband - no trick! But I appreciate your kind words!

Roxanna, amen, and those are some excellent ideas. I'm not a layer-er, so I am going to try to vary the 'type' of sweater, as I tend to collect fine-knit crewnecks ... at least if I throw in a few maybe cable-knit turtlenecks and sweatshirts with some pretty details, I might feel a bit more varied. We won't talk about the fact that I did indeed by a fine-knit crewneck at the used clothing store today *sigh* !!! (and it was navy because I don't wear enough of that hahahahah)

I so hear you! I also tend to leave side my t-shirts and blouses in'deep winter' which leaves me with sweaters, sweaters And more sweaters. This be so bored I shop more - for, of course - sweaters.

I am determined to break the cycle this year so I will be interested in your experiment. I am also looking at how I can wear those t-shirts and fluid blouses through winter so I get more variety - for example, t-shirt with cashmere hoodie and blazer, or fluid blouse wth long sleeve base layer underneath.

I need a lesson about tucking from you. Both outfits look great, that belt really elevates them. I too am eyeing a lot of green items and hope to find a few to perk up my fall and winter wardrobe. And a good reminder about checking out the local consignment store and perhaps trying to remove some of my closet mistakes.

Both look good, and yay to new shop find!
As far as deep winter, you may want to put the pieces into a seperate formula, as there are many more things that need to interact together. Pants that fit in snowboots, coats big and long enough for multiple layers, boots that fit with thick socks, etc...Sad now Think I'll go live with Jenn!

Hi friends, happy Friday! The last two randomly selected outfits (one by throw of dice, the other by my daughter) to complete the week. From this little experiment I've learned a few valuable things:

uniform dressing can provide plenty (for me personally) of variety - none of these outfits feel like repeats (again, to me) even though the formula is virtually identical and the types of pieces not particularly varied.

every year I get the winter style blues, and I think part of it at least is because the categories of clothing I have to choose from diminishes (e.g., I almost never wear my fluid blouses or t-shirt because they are too cold, I don't switch out my jeans, and I am limited on snow-appropriate footwear and coats); therefore, I can't mix it up. I'll attend to this as we move later in the year, with a view to my Jan - Mar 'deep winter' capsule. I'm thinking categories such as "chunky knit" and "elevated/fashion sweatshirt" might be good replacement top categories for blouses and t-shirt to start building, and outerwear in a different colour or style (which I've talked about for several years but HATE spending money on) might be good ideas.

My last two outfits were as follows:

neutral sweater + moto skinnies + booties + necklace, and

fluid blouse + skinny jeans + booties + hoops

Both incorporated some form of green so based on Angie's trend report, I did alright :D

Speaking of 'green', I did some second-hand shopping today! A store called "Encore Style", which I think is owned by the same company as Play It Again Sports - they buy gently-used clothing, accessories, etc. (they use a formula so you won't make a fortune, but also no bargaining required) and curate well, so everything seemed really clean and in excellent condition, with a range of brands from Forever 21 right up to the higher end (LV, Jimmy Choo, etc.). I walked out with a new-to-me sweater AND $100 in my pocket from selling a few items, AND someone congratulated me on helping the environment to boot, so all in all, a good shopping experience! It was hard for me to leave behind a Club Monaco striped sweater and some nude Cole Haan heels that were in pristine condition. I would definitely start there the next time I'm in need of something.

Sorry for the long post; enjoy the weekend all! xx
