Totally been there on the hip fitting issue! I've been sticking to looser, flowier pieces lately and then partially or fully tucking them to maintain shape. But I love the more fitted look of this blouse.

I love how you've styled it here - classy, feminine, a little retro and oh so flattering. You have such a tiny waist! Beautiful look.

Thanks, Aida and shevia - I never thought of modern/current retro as a descriptor, but I like it! It does fit a lot of what I do. Today I'm wearing a vintage princess-darted dress (prob. early 50s) with a gray military/sf jacket. And a big blingy necklace. Kind of random!

Kari, I admit haven't actually seen that show - but I love circle skirts and blouses. I have an awesome 50s atomic print quilted skirt in coral, bright green, and lavender. I like to wear it with a black turtleneck, black tights, and Miz Mooz tall lace-up boots. ;)

Firecracker, that is a good idea. It's a pretty long shirt so it depends on how high I'd have to make the slit; and I wouldn't want it to mess it up for other ways of styling. Definitely something to consider.

Bijou, I'm looking forward to it!

This outfit looks lovely and it is great to know that as the weather gets cooler you have another skirt to wear it with (I love the sound of the leather skirt and green tights combination too).

Great outfit--the new top works well with the skirt and pretty, vintage shoes. I wonder if you could alter the top, with your sewing skills. Maybe slit the sides up higher?

Beautiful. It's like a modern version of the beautiful circle skirt & blouse outfits I swooned over in the first season of Call the Midwife (not the nurse uniforms, to be clear!) I love the print on your blouse.

Thanks, Banoffi! I had an appointment this afternoon and a random lady I met was in raptures. Talk about a confidence-booster. ;)

Bonnie G, finish the skirt! I know how it feels to loose steam, so I'm very glad to provide motivation. Tuck + belt is a nice formula. Angie recommends matching the belt to the top for short waists, and matching the belt to the skirt for long waists or leg lengthening.

Alassë, it certainly is! It's actually from a 1950s pattern. Basic full (but NOT circle) 4-gore skirt, but with enormous pockets. I really wanted to see how it would work on. Now I love them. They add some nice textural detail. Besides, pockets!

A perfectly fitting garment is a wonderful thing. Your skirt is an interesting design (almost like an apron + a skirt), and those heels are so elegant & pretty!

I like the way you styled your skirt. Your skirt looks like the skirt I started before I went on vacation and haven't finished yet. Now, I'm inspired to get to work. My skirt is in a brown tiedye pattern, and I wondered about what kind of top to wear with it. I'll definitely be trying tucking in a shirt with a belt after seeing your post.

Thank you, everyone! Jenn and Word Lily - wow, it feels so good to know that I'm not alone in the top-not-fitting-hips department. I'm so glad there are options for styling.

And good point about the floral being a really nice one. I think it's the use of open space that makes it restful, combined with the scale. It's got some pretty greens in it that I'm looking forward to pulling out with tights or leggings and black faux leather skirt.

Thakoon also has a knot-front silky knit top that's pretty amazing. If this one hadn't worked better for me, I would have gotten it. It's available both in the blue floral (on black) and a red/yellow one.

I feel your pain with tops not fitting on the hip. This looks great fully-tucked, though, and fits your retro aesthetic. I've also been finding myself drawn to the chiaroscuro floral look recently.

And the vintage shoes! So fun!

I guess I'm in the midst of an unofficial style refresh. Last week I went out to try new styles of tops. I don't have a lot that's transitional, and I definitely don't have any of the new silhouettes. Partly because it takes a fitted top with hip room to actually fit me, much less look remotely flattering.

I suspected that the with the right half-tuck and drapey fabrics, I could make some things work. I came home with three tops (and a surprise dress), all of which I love. This is the one that I can get away with wearing while it's yet hot.

The top is from Thakoon (new to me); very lightweight, I think a printed smooth georgette. The crew neck is regular knit, so it has a sporty feel. But the shoulders fit me perfectly. The sleeves have button cuffs, also fitting me perfectly in both length and width. The rest of it... well, it doesn't begin to fit over my hips, even with the short side slits. It's very straight. But I think I can do a half tuck with other bottoms when it gets cooler, so that shouldn't matter. It seems to work in the dressing room.

For the rest, it's a mix: Suede snakeskin-look navy belt from Talbot's, a clearance find; a white piqué skirt made by me; and 1940s navy leather peep-toe sandals. They were unworn and in the original box when I got them. They're the most comfortable heels I own; I had the heels re-soled last year.
