I had pink eye twice last year and a corneal ulcer so had to wear my glasses for several weeks at a time. The thought of eye surgery made me cringe too, but the hate of glasses finally overcame my squeamishness. The surgery itself took less than 5 minutes (total for both eyes). My eyes got very dry afterwards and they gave me eye drops that were thick like jelly. I loved it - so soothing. I only mention this because you're in a dry climate too.
