^^ I agree; my first thought was that those were straight legs rather than skinnies. Either way, they look good!

Hello!

I don't think those are skinnies. I think they are straight-legs. I define skinnies as being really tight all the way down the leg, whereas straight legs go straight from the hump of the calf down.

Whatever you call them, they fit just fine. Enjoy!

Echoing the others - you look great in skinnies. I would suggest tucking into boots, which is my favorite look for skinnies, and a slightly longer shirt or tunic.

Congrats on being brave and posting pictures, it really is the best way to recieve helpful feedback! You can absolutely wear skinnies and I too am an hourglass and love them. Proportion is everything and even more so for me with my petite height along with the hourglass. This shirt length would be fine with straight leg or boot cuts. With the skinnies, it just misses the mark.
You've gotten some great advice here. I would like to add that taking photos really helps more than just looking in the mirror and advise doing so on a regular basis. We have all thought we did great, but at one time or another seen something off in photos!

The skinnys look great on you. I prefer them rolled with that sandal but they would look great left long with a different shoe. I'm not a fan of the top, it looks too short to really be a tunic and to short/straight to wear as one would a button down. You might be able to save it by wearing with skirts.

Welcome to WIW posts! You did great!

I absolutely think you can wear skinnies! With your casual lifestyle, you'd do well to have several styles of jeans in your wardrobe. I'm going to jump out there and say that, with the sandals, I prefer them rolled.

When I joined YLF two years ago, I begun upgrading to a higher percentage of woven to knit tops, too. It took a while, but is still making a difference. You chosen a great place to begin.

As for footwear, there are quite a number of forum members who need to stick to comfort footwear. What brands do you favor now?

Also, do you have a favorite style of jean?

I am an hourglass and I almost exclusively wear skinnies. I am also just under 5'4", so on the short side. My main proportion "trick" is to wear them with heels. Another "trick" is to wear the same colored footwear with the jeans. For example, If I am not following rule #1, as in when I wear 1.5" booties, I follow rule #2. Finally, a long toe box or pointy toe can help balance hourglass proportions.

I have outfits where I follow all three rules/tricks and the result is that I look quite tall. Which I don't have a problem with. ;-)

Wow! thanks all for the great advice. I will feel way more confident in these skinnies now. Marley- I will be on the lookout for slouchy skinnies. Sveta - thanks for the all the great details! I will have to look at your posts to get some ideas on longer shirts. I do need a shoe makeover but I have to stick with the comfier brands so it is a challenge. I am on the lookout for booties. I would love to wear ballet flats or slipper flats but I have never found a pair that will fit my wide toes and narrow heel.
I have a lot of shopping to do and it may take some time but feel better knowing that I will be adding carefully selected pieces with all of your help!

Hi Jeanie and welcome to the forum! Good for you for taking courage and posting your WIW with questions - many of us learned heaps this way.
You know, "Can I wear skinnies" was one of my first posts here too! as you I read everywhere that only skinny girls should wear skinnies and hourglass gals like me ( and you) should stick to bootcuts. Angie's posts were the first ones I read where curvy gals were encouraged to try skinnies because if you style them well they work for many body types. Light bulb went on for me for sure!

So this is what this hourglass girl can tell you; you ROCK skinnies! Honestly, you look amazing in them. However I don't like this top with them as much (it is not a tunic length on you, too short). I have learned that for my curves the best and foolproof way to wear them is with the longer top which covers my behind and falls lower than my widest hip point. With skinnies it is all the matter of proportions and balance IMO. Try them with a longer and more fluid top. Curving bottom of the top helps as well to make the proportions right - straight like across the widest portion of the hips makes them look even wider.

I would also suggest different footwear here. With skinnies shoes come to the first plan because they are all visible and because tapered legs take the eye down to them. Boots of any height is a great option for skinnies (sometimes mid calf high boots can be a problem though and may need careful styling but knee high and booties are no brainer). Ballet flats and pumps are great with skinnies too as well as oxfords, loafers and slipper flats. What does not look as good IMO is the chunky and not-so-fashion-forward footwear styles. Actually this was one of the first things I learned here: nothing makes or breaks an outfit like shoes! I had to purge 90% of my footwear in the first year because they all just made me feel dowdy and does not matter which clothes I tried the footwear dragged everything down. I would suggest to focus in this area too.

Sorry for the novel - I was so excited by your courageous plunge into skinnies! I hope you don't mind my honest opinion here because this is how I learned!

Can you wear skinny jeans? Most definitely yes. There are many, many hourglasses on this site and you will see them looking fab in skinnies.
Do the jeans look better un-rolled? Yes. Check out Angie's posts on PPL (perfect pants length) and on wearing cropped pants. PPL is my bete noire; I am permanently on L plates in that department.
As for the tunic, I agree with the others.

I think it's great that you've taken that first tough but vital step of posting pics. You have a great attitude-welcome and have fun. Penny

You are rocking the skinnies! I too prefer them unrolled over the sandals.

I don't seem to see an issue with the straight edge of the tunic. But I might not be the best judge in that area as I do not know proportions that well. I do think that they might look better tucked with some other jeans or skirt perhaps?

I think you look great in the skinny jeans - not a problem! I like them best unrolled as it gives you a longer leg line. As far as the top goes - it appears that the color is really nice with your hair color (at least what I can see of it!) - but I don't think it is long enough to be worn as a tunic - but not short enough to be considered cropped either! Its kind of in-between and for me, that is the most difficult type of top to wear. Its like it just can't make up its mind what it wants to do! Perhaps try the top with a different bottom - and tuck it in completely (because I don't think it looks as though it is long enough or has enough volume to do a semi-tuck.) Also, I think that if you find a pair of slouchy skinnies - one's with belt loops so that you can wear them with a belt - I bet you'll have a lot of fun experimenting with different types of tops to wear with them. I've found that a great fitting pair of slouchy skinnies are an absolute staple in my wardrobe!
Thanks for posting!

You look great in skinny jeans! They fit you well and show your figure in a nice way (i.e., not too revealing, just flattering). I prefer them unrolled, for the long, lean leg line.
I don't think the straight hem on the tunic is an issue, but I think the length is kind of in-between what would be optimal. I like your idea of semi-tucking it, so I'd try that with other pants that you'd like to wear that way. For wearing out, I think a little longer tunic would be good, or a shorter boxy style that hints more at the waist.

I have spent many a fun hours reading the YLF posts and am trying to incorporate all I have learned into a style transition. I mostly have jeans and t-shirts so I am trying to take Angie's advice and find some nicer blouses for toppers. I spent the day at the mall and tried on so many things but only bought 2 items. Whew! The tops I tried on ranged from XS to L???? Weird. This makes me think twice about online shopping. I am a little scared to post pics because you all look so good but I need to learn so here goes....

This is what I wore to the mall taken from what I have in my closet. It is still warm so opted for sandals. First question. Am I able to wear skinny jeans? Most things I read say they are not best for my hourglass body type. Do the jeans look better rolled or straight with these sandals?

Second question - this is an old Tommy Hilfiger tunic. Is this straight hem unflattering? I would try faux tucking but these jeans don't have belt loops. Is the tunic worth keeping?

Target Merona skinny jeans
Tommy Hilfiger Chambray Tunic
Clarks sandals

Thanks!
