I like Sal's idea with a more form-fitting tank or t-shirt tucked in and then a button-up shirt on top left open. I've done this with shorts and it was fun for me to wear. Also, I’ve found that a body-skimming (not too tight, not too boxy) tee cropped to just the right length (for me, maybe just covering the waist) can be really good with those kinds of pants.
