Tulle thank you for your comment. You are right - these are not super dressy, but dressy enough for holiday meals with friends where really anything goes. I have not worn much jewelry lately but I should try some when I am dressing up. Thanks for the food for thought.
MFF thank you for the flats appreciation! I should try tying the skirt lower, although I have a feeling it will be happier on someone else.
Diane the best part is getting different points of view, but I feel I give a lot of "wrong" answers myself :-).
Aubergine I think you are right about the straight pants. Thanks for your kind words.
Thank you all for your really thoughtful and helpful comments - I appreciate every one of them. And I will throw in a gmar chatima tova (basically a wish for a good year)!

Gorgeous! Am literally drooling over #1-3.

I think #3 works with the straighter pants and flats, maybe because I'm pretty used to dresses over leggings and it has a similar feel, although flares and heels could be fun too.

For me, #4 works with the loafers, although I do feel like another shoe would make it more dressy. (And you seriously thrifted Gucci loafers? Wow!)

And the skirt in #5 is beautiful, but I think someone way more advanced than me would be needed to come up with styling ideas.

I decided not to read the other posts in case I am wrong. LOL

#1 is really nice. I think the jacket would work well with a lot of outfits and can see it worn unbuttoned.

#2 I think this is my favorite. I love the monochromatic look with the pattern on top and the shape of that skirt is fabulous on you. A real winner in my eye.

#3 I find the scrunch of the pant just a bit distracting. I would try it with a slimmer pant. I think the length of the top would work really well with something sleek.

#4 Great find on the shoes. I like them with this dress. May be the shorter hemline that works with the flats and lengthens the legline (which seems to be my personal obsession).

#5 I think the proportion is the issue in this one. I like the fit and look of the skirt but the tucked top and high waist may be throwing it off a bit. If you put the top out and belted, would that make it work??

#1 is fun. Wear it!

#2 I actually don't think heels would look better. I think flats make it more current. I'd wear slightly more masculine flats to balance the look, but the ones pictured are fine too.

#3 I really like this look and I say wear as is -- again I am not at all sure it would be good to add heels, though I see the point in theory. Flares would work too but it would be a different look.

#4 Perhaps I just like the high-vamp shoe look -- I love this too, and would wear those loafers or masculine oxfords.

#5 How about trying the skirt wrapped low on your hips instead, with flats and longer top?

All of these very different outfits are great, and suit you well, but only 4 & 5 read "dressy" to me. I adore that Farhi dress especially--very fresh and appealing--and wonder if you've considered adding adding a bold statement necklace (even a few strands of fat beads) to that pretty neckline? With the wrap skirt/black top, you could accentuate the retro-boho vibe with a bunch of bangles and/or some hoop earrings. You strike me as someone who can wear jewelry to advantage.

Wow! I have to say I am blown away, and totally delighted, by the detailed suggestions I have received.
Angie - I am delighted you liked #1! The whole idea only occurred to me after watching the shows. I will definitely wear it when the whether cools and your comment will boost my happiness factor to the sky! The loafers have already been reassigned to my black jeans, and the skirt is on its way out.
Thank you Sara - I think given my own inital feelings and the consensus here, I will just move that skirt to a better home. Glad you liked the yellow shoes!
Amy I would love to go thrifting with you, your place or mine!
Day Vies your attention to detail and precise suggestions amazed me. I love that you noticed the loafers are actually driving moccasins! You are absolutely right about the top of the skirt emphasizing my middle- believe me it looked much worse from the side for exactly that reason.
Crutcher - I think the skirt just needs a better home - thanks for helping convince me!
Keturah you have totally charmed me (not that I wasn't charmed already) by mentioning Marion Cotillard on my thread. Isn't she stunning? Thank you for the detailed comments - the loafers have been assigned jeans duty already.
Aida! You know how much I appreciate your analysis and suggestions but the blast from the past Aida pictures were a special treat. You were gorgeous then, but I love your hair is all its glory now even more. I am going to try the dress with flares just to see what happens ;-)!
Ornella, you are just so lovely even with your suggestions that I get a warm feeling just reading them. Thank you!

#1 Just look at the sleeves roll, brilliant. I must admit at first sight it all seemed a bit boxy, but on second look (and third etc.) I totally fell for this.

#2 Great outfit and good choice.

#3 had me right away, I see tunic over skinnies sort of action there, which is always a winner in my book.

#4 Definitely need more lightweight footwear. I think the combination of your hair and the dress pattern call for something of similar colouring in the footwear department.

#5 I kind of like the skirt, but I'm not sure about it. Too many difficult points about it.

Oooh what fun! Let's see here...

#1-3 are all super. I know some others found the buttoned-up jacket in #1 too stiff, but I think it makes the look. Might skew too classic for you otherwise. Totally love #2 with the flats, again adds just that little bit of funkiness. #3 works, though perhaps you might try a roll lower so the amount of skin between strap and hem is smaller; would be a bit leaner looking. I think it'll also work with flares if you can do a little heel with it. I know it's not to everyone's taste, but it's a look I'm personally fond of and sport from time to time (I managed to unearth an older photo of this, #5).

For #4, I think a lower contrast shoe might work better so that the dress is more of a stand out piece. With the high contrast footwear, it competes. I don't know that vamp would be a factor if you go low contrast, so something high or something low would work. Or, of course, the ubiquitous bootie. I do think those loafers would be really fun with shorts though (either long or short), along with a more a-line skirt to tone the girly factor of it down.

A bit torn on #5. For one, the skirt is pretty and has such cool construction! But the plain underneath side would bother me too. As far as styling, I know it would hide the wrap detail at the top, but have you tried a skirt-length fluid top? A cropped chunky sweater could also be fun.

Mon cherie, marvelous!!! Please please do wear #1! Really, really you and really fresh and beautiful on you. It seems...very French Chic to my eye, like something I would almost expect Marion Cotillard to appear in. Only change I would make is to maybe unbutton the jacket, which would also make it feel less "stiff." I love it. Please wear it!

#2 and #3 seem like "you" again and again. Would probably unroll the pants, or just do a single cuff. I feel flare legs would be a bit much, so stick with the skinny. They are more chic and current.

#4 I feel the loafers would be best with pants of some kind.

# 5...you don't look comfortable in it, and it sounds as if you're trying to convince yourself to love it. But you clearly don't. So perhaps let the skirt go.

#3 is my favorite. I think it works as is because the proportions work so well. I also love the detail of the cropped pants with the ankle strap.

#1 would work better with the jacket unbuttoned. It looks more relaxed and goes with the general feel of a denim jacket (relaxed).

#2 I like the shoes just fine here. I think given the volume of the top that black booties would have been an interesting choice.

#4 I think the driving moccasin echoes the volume of the dress. I think a sleek ballet flat would work best to contrast with the volume of the dress.

#5 I really like the organic feel of the print on your skirt here. I also love the orange trim and the mustard shoe -- I think the curved edge of the top here makes your tummy prominent. I would prefer a straight line on the top either a little higher or a little lower, but that's my preference for clean lines coming through.

Fun experiments. I enjoy seeing how you style your items. Those yellow shoes are fabulous and what a great score with the Gucci loafers. I love #2 and #3 and the dress in #4. The skirt in #5 does seem an awkward length but maybe Firecracker's idea of a buttonhole could help that.

Loving #1, #2 and #3, Jaime. WOW. #1 is my best, best, best, and very K-word worthy. How fun that you're inspired by Burberry and Prada Spring 2015. Denim jackets are going to be big again because of them, I bet.

I think the killer Gucci loafers might look better with pants and jeans - or a black dress. Incredible score.

You might need to pass on the wrap skirt since you don't like the unprinted underside. That would drive me crazy too. xo

Thank you for your replies - lots of interesting ideas.
Angie_T, Una, Suz, Diana and Sharan I really wasn't sure about the jacket as top idea but I am glad to see you think it works.
mirrorlight - Thanks! It is great to know #5 has a fan. I really like the idea of the skirt too.
Una, the funny thing is I have tons of dressy clothes, but usually do not get photos of them.
Suz thank you for detailed (and funny!) comments. I didn't find the jacket uncomfortable (it is not stiff) just too warm and perhaps too weird for dinner. Will reconsider when the weather cools.
Diana, those shoes are by Shani Bar. Israelis make a lot of funky shoes along with Naots :-)! I have a style conscious friend that said the same thing about the skirt when she saw it a while ago. Hmm.
Sharan you are so clever to suggest a buttonhole (and to tell me what to call it). Really the skirt is for a taller person I think. Or at least one with a longer waist.
Enjoyed all of your comments so much - thanks again!

Oh, I love that dress in 4 on you! I probably would prefer a lower vamp shoe, too, but this is the kind of silhouette that Angie suggested with Gucci-esque loafers. So I wonder why we don't like the real-deal Gucci loafers with the look?! Maybe it's just that that they're black, whereas Angie was wearing white.
I agree you should wear look 1 out--fantastic! I love the idea of the jacket as top, and this one works really well.
I like the outfit you wore! Very sophisticated and polished dressy outfit. I love those pretty ankle straps. I'm thinking an edgier shoe might give the outfit more of your signature style. But I do get the comfort factor; it's why I wear my Think! Mary Janes so much, when I do have other options that would make more of a statement. Anyway, nicely done and a keeper outfit for your dressy capsule!
Dress over pants works well. The pants roll looks good with the ankle strap shoes. If you went with a higher heel, I could see the pants unrolled perhaps. I think I might prefer the skinnies to flares.
I like the skirt in 5 with the shoes. The top of the skirt looks awkward, though. could you add a buttonhole to put the tie through, so that you could wrap the skirt in the conventional way (and have it lay more smoothly at the waist)?
It's fun to see your tryouts for dressy occasions!

Ok, first off I want to go thrifting with you!

I think #1 is great, and I hope you find somewhere to wear it soon. #2 and #3 are both also excellent. I like the dress in #4 although I agree the shoes are too heavy here. Try them with the yellow shoes in#5 maybe? ( by the way those yellow shoes are awesome! What are they?). With #5 the skirt looks interesting but I can see it might be annoying. I don't mind the white underside actually - it looks deliberate to me, like it's adding contrast or something. I dont know what to do about the length though - it doesn't seem like it would be easy to shorten due to the edging...

I always love your posts! #1 is fantastic and I hope you will wear a version of it. Is the jacket bulky feeling or too crisp/ hard? I have been thinking about trying a similar experiment with one of my denim jackets. I would get a lot more wear from them if I could do this in winter. So I just may try it. But I had worried about that "bulky" feeling.

#2 is lovely on you; very elegant.

#3 I actually love as is, but it would also look great as you suggest. I have a friend who can wear the dress over pants look brilliantly and she almost always chooses flares. She is very tall, though, which helps.

#4 I love that dress on you. Wow!! As for thrifting Gucci loafers, we will not even go there. I don't mind them with the dress, to be honest, but maybe not for dressy, if you know what I mean.

#5 The pattern on the skirt is beautiful but it would probably bother me that it doesn't go on both sides, too. Although I love the red piping. I do not have any suggestions because I think you styled it well. But if it doesn't feel fab, banish it! :)

I actually really like 5! Something about it just seems to work, in my opinion. 3 is lovely too!

In all honesty, not a fan of 5 - to me it doesn't seem like you and it's sort of awkward. #3 speaks right to my heart as it looks very Indian. 1 and 2 are both so you! 4 also seems a little different for you but well within range. It's fun to see some dressy looks from you!

Oh Shevia I love #1 and I hope you decide to wear it sometime.
#2 was a great choice. You look really good in this.
I also like 3,4 & 5 as well. The dress over pants seem to fit your personality and I actually like the quirkiness of #5.

Honestly your hair and your smile seem to make everything you adorn yourself with work.

I often don't manage to get WIW pictures of what I wear for holiday dinners, but this time I tried to do a little pre-production photo shoot. It actually worked out well for me because I saw what to change. See if you agree with me, or better yet have better ideas!

#1 Inspired by some sort of fusion of the Burberry and Prada shows I decided to try this thrifted Guess denim jacket with this silky pencil skirt. I did not wear this but I do want to explore the jacket as top concept in the future.
#2 I did wear this. Heels would be more flattering but flats are easier to move around in.
#3 Inspired by the concept of dress over pants I tried this. Decided it would work so much better with flared pants and heels, what do you think?
#4 Wanted to wear my new thrifted Gucci loafers - yes, I obnoxiously found a pair of older Gucci loafers at a charity shop, and they are only slightly too big
;-) - but switched to less high vamp shoes when I saw this.
#5 Total disaster and did not wear. I have owned this very interesting wrap skirt for years (it wraps without the little slots to pass through the belt). Unfortunately if I wrap it under my ribs it is way too high on me. Also, I am bothered that they did not use a print on the other side.

I would love styling ideas for any one of these outfits or items!

Clothing details: Every single item here was inexpensive second hand so no finds but for those of you who like designer names anyway, the blue skirt is Dries van Noten, the black and white top is Nili Lotan, the blue tunic/dress is 3.1 Phillip Lim, the black and white dress with big dots is Nicole Farhi, and the wrap skirt is Israeli brand Frau Blau.
