My tendency to overthink things can really get in the way of that. K, these boots are black with a small heel and they zip on the sides (inside), so sounds like ours are different.  I have this pair of tall ones and a shorter pair in chocolate brown.  I bought them when I was freelancing from home so I didn't wear them too much, which is the main reason they've survived in such good shape! What Dianthus said is right. I don't know if it's worth it to force yourself to wear colors that make you feel uncomfortable. Feeling happy shines through one's style, as does feeling ill-at-ease. I feel drab in mostly neutral outfits, even though they look ok on me. Brighter colors help me maintain a happier mood. It seems to me that brighter colors make you feel garish and you are happier in your elegant neutrals. Perhaps start with small doses of color instead of entire outfits? Bloomingdale's Aqua  jacket Lauren print dress JCrew boots (bought about 10 years ago!) I felt pretty happy with this look.  Ivory/Eggshell is a good neutral for me.
