OMG, what an awfull experince you had...I commiserate and sending healing vibes to you Suz! My DH broke his right wrist 2 weeks ago (could be the same day with your accident) falling on the front door stairs. Stairs were clear but we had sleet on that icy dark morning-and he rushed out not knowing that. We have 7 steps and no rail for the reason of not ruining the aesthetic of the house(!!) and too late but am so so mad about this vanity, now:-((.. He got a cast but had no surgery and just wondering how long his complete recovery will take but I am also aware it could have been so much more worse than that...It was really a frightenning experience to see him falling that high and long. It happened in a fraction of a second and I was in my PJ and slippers but instinctually wanted to step out myself to help but he shouted me to stay still---otherwise no doubts it would have been a double accident.

@ Suz - the surgery isn’t a bad thing, and may result in a better/faster outcome in the long run. DH broke his collarbone whilst skiing - a surprisingly gentle fall, but he landed funny. He was 50yo. He did not have surgery, and his recovery was long. He was trussed up in a harness/brace for 16 weeks and healed with a minor deformity - which is usual when you don’t have surgery.

The good news is he recovered his golf game and even lowered his handicap, but he couldn’t carry his golf bag (backpack style harness) without irritating the area, so went to a push cart.

I'm so sorry - such a terrible accident ( and more scary stories along the way ). I'm afraid of something like that happening to me since I've got diagnosed as having osteoporosis versus osteopenia before ( went on weekly medications with a hope of slowing the process down ).
My mom got her wrist, hip and such broken a few times - long and slow recovery each time. Take your time to heal, don't rush things, go with doctor advice ( and hug your lovely kitty ).

Alas, I also need surgery. It's not usual (except for young athletes) but this is a severely displaced break and it got worse in the week between my fall and the second x-ray. So...there it is! I'll be wearing a sling for a while...

Oh my Suz, I haven’t been on the forum all week and am just now seeing this. I agree that letting family dote on you sounds like a perfect plan. The good think about being in front of class is that it takes all one’s attention. I’ve found teaching a respite during hard times. I’m glad to hear from other fabbers that collar bones tend to heal well.

Oh no!!! SO sorry to see this :(Fingers and toes crossed it heals quickly, kitty purrs will help Last January I was just starting my day, got out of bed, took 3-4 steps and my knee went out! Looked at my leg and my foot was turned the wrong way. Tried moving it side to side and I could feel my bones shifting in my lower leg! NOT good, ack! Had to call an ambulance. Ended up I needed surgery, so Dr put in a metal plate and 6 screws. Dr said NO weight bearing for 7 weeks. Was doing 'ok' at home but fell a couple times. Dr said it looked fine after that period. Then did really intense physical therapy for 3 months, got my 'all clear'. Went from wheelchair to walker to cane, so making good progress. Went for my final recheck and found out the plate had broken and 1 screw was hanging by a thread. So back to the wheelchair. Dr said I needed to see a subspecialist that deals with physical trauma. That was in July. Closest was 2 hrs away (we live in a rural area). That Dr said he needed to remove all the hardware, put a long rod from just under my knee to bottom of foot, used 2 screws with that. In a wheelchair till end of October, then 2 wheel walker to mid-November. Still using the 4 wheeled walker today....

That sounds just horrifying! I’m so glad it was no worse. Still bad though. And a bit freakish, not hhectyod of thing one thinks of as trying to prevent with all our exercises and fall avoidance, except that perhaps stronger bones and good muscles may protect some of our parts during a fall. So, stuff happens. Yikes.

I often talk to myself when navigating certain stairs or terrain, like, pay attention, don’t try to do that while doing this. And yet of course that only helps to some degree. Not that that is your situation, but just commiserating.

At Dr visits they always ask, “Do you have a fear of falling ? “. I get it, but my instinctive response would be, Whaat? Of course I think it would be terrible. I always answer no, though.

That's awful, so sorry you are broken! Flip side, so glad it was not worse than a collarbone because falling down the stairs sounds terrifying. Thankful that you are not hurt worse.

I broke both feet/ankles the same year and the same way...horse falling on me. Well, after the second one I sold that horse! But that second one was worse and persists as a bone deformity. The good thing was I was 13 so I probably healed faster than I would have otherwise, even if not completely normally. Being that I was 13 and this was so long ago I have no good healing advice. I wonder if red light helps bones like it helps muscles. I don't know!

Oh no! Take the time necessary to heal. Sounds like you are already getting some gentle exercise outside which I would find helpful!
