I also applaud the Director's choice to record the vocals live (and not overly produced) and allow the singer/actors to be in the moment. I did think the close camera and emphasis on acting first had negative affects on the singing at times --- and to me, a free voice is the most expressive one. A voice coming at you like a resonant wave can be as emotional as a sob, and very uplifting. You hear this in the anthem, "Do You Hear the People Sing." Still, I think that Anne Hathaway's singing of "I Dreamed a Dream" was beautiful and very moving --- If she sang like that 8 shows a week on Broadway, though, her voice would be gone in a month. Most importantly, thogh, the over-arching theme of redemption and grace is powerful. This is one of the first items I "sized up" on. Did I make the right choice?
