I haven't seen crop tops in my area yet, but it just looks seasonally confused with jeans to me! I see a lot of cropped sweatshirts too- like on Athleta. When would you wear them? I know, since when does fashion make sense?
They do work well with swishy skirts for festivals though

We see the crop tops here too (& I doubt it’s much warmer than San Fran) Not so many jeans I’d call baggy, which I take to mean big around hips & thighs in a way that obscures them before coming in on the calves (though still not tight) as there are loose-fitting jeans that are fitted around the waist to the top of the hips, then cascade down freely, straight all the way to the hems which are at the shoes or cropped. I like those, have also seen them with different fabric. Plenty of stompy black boots with bare legs and skirts. I have not seen the big shirts/argyle vests, wonder if they’ll show up eventually. There’s so much variety here it’s hard to see trends—saw 3 mature women today in loose-fitting, cropped beige/khaki pants. They were together: Trend or their crowd’s thing? Hard to say, but it’s not for me.

I looked up Hailey B, see that she’s someone I have a photo of saved on my phone, because I like the slip dress she’s wearing. Guess that’s a true influencer—someone who influences people when they don’t even know it.

The father/daughter occultists are poignant for me, because my dad still wishes I had joined him in his ophthalmology practice.

Helena, i didn’t realize Muskoka was such a thing! My nephew pastored a church there for a couple years, and did mention vacationers, but I’ve never heard it mentioned “from the outside”.

Runcarla, a pretty fascinating post, very comprehensive, and the personal details clarified the context in a way that made it better than just a travel report. Intriguing, the part about the work of the father and daughter specialists.

I don't exactly miss office wear as it was, the dry clean only fabrics, the stiff styles often inappropriate for the weather, etc., but without "work wear" of all kinds there's a monotony to the current styles that's a little dreary.

I was so absorbed in your description I almost forgot to look at the photos. Great outfit, I especially like high contrast factor, gives it real energy.

thanks!

You look great Carla and thanks so much!

The street style report is awesome ... No surprises, as I'd say the uniform is about the same here in the 'burbs (with more yoga gear on the mom set) ... Makes sense that the business wear is in short supply right now, August is notoriously quiet in the financial district even without a pandemic! (Muskoka calls ...) ... Hope you'll share the rest of your thoughts when you can!

Thanks for the report, I even forwarded your observations about the youngs to my DD(24) as we just have had an succesfull back to college shopping on the weekend and she bought several pieces you have mentioned there like

baggy jeans (in brown), a snug sweater cropsweater (long sleeved, almost midriff baring in black), a very oversized button down, and sweater vest (one argyle, and one plain black). I don't know if she will eventually implement IRL but you gave her a great idea for wearint the oversized button down as a dress (with the argyle sweater vest on top) over sore bicycle shorts under.

I like the color combo of your big city ensemble! Very crisp! I have been seeing a lot of baggy jeans on college students as well. It is a juxtaposition with their moms wearing leggings My uncle also has a “plastic eye”. He was robbed and shot with a BB gun in college. His fittings are in Buffalo. When I was a kid he wore an eye patch which I thought was very cool.

And I take it from your report that you were THIRSTY for people watching and soaked up the big-city vibe with gusto! I can understand why you wouldn't be interesting in embracing most of those trends -- it sounds as if they are for the young. And that's ok.

Great report! Thank you, Carla! I am definitely seeing similar trends with the young people here, though more shorts because it is still very hot. Yes on midriffs. Nike Air Force Ones seem to be the sneaker of the day.
I will add that on my campus there is a decent amount of shocking red and magenta hair, which I love. Not much short hair on women at all here, either.

This is interesting and thorough. I like your descriptions of each group. I have not been to a city since May and the only people I see besides locals are tourists who have come for the day to cool off and shop for tourist stuff. We went for lunch last week at a normally super busy restaurant which had only one other group of three at 12:30. We sat on opposite sides of the restaurant. Our waitress wore a mask and had a haircut like the one you described, asymmetrical with a long hank of hair. She looked and was charming.

Great observation, RunCarla, I agree with all you said. Not a lot of people in the financial district, still mostly working from home. But slowly mandatory vacation policies are getting introduced and more people will be back.
I noticed there are more high waisted, straight, vintage inspired jeans, like Levi’s Wedges in full length. I like the look and probably this style is going to become widely popular.

I went back to the USA over the summer after a long absence, and I was shocked by the long fake eyelashes, so much makeup, and long fake nails—even in really rural places! DH’s theory was “maybe everybody has more time to spend on grooming now, stuck at home?”

I leaned heavily into the jeans and t-shirt uniform, with a special topper to add some ‘oomph!’ to my outfits, during this short trip to Toronto. I don’t feel that it was as successful as my earlier Ottawa travel capsule, but I was hoofing it more during this trip, and it was warmer in the Big City than I expected. I was constantly putting on and taking off the jacket!

Our activities were focused on the city centre health corridor (University Avenue). DS#2 had appointments associated with the fabrication of a new occular prosthesis - his 9th since he was first fit for one at 8 months of age. Interestingly, this ‘plastic eye’ was a collaborative effort between his original occularist and his daughter - who is following in her father’s footsteps just as he followed in his father’s! DS’s occularist is my age, and his daughter is DS’s age!

Over the 3 days of our stay, I tried to keep an eye on what folks were wearing, in order to learn if there are any specific trends that I might be interested in adopting. I did see some trends, but the jury is out on adopting any of them atm. I have to qualify my observations - they were confined to a small geographic area of central/downtown Toronto, Ontario (the biggest city in Canada at roughly 7 million?)

I used to work in an office tower in downtown Toronto until I retired in early 2018. The morning commute, lunch hour, and evening commute was a flood of ‘business’ people clad in suits or other appropriate business attire, with a few ‘creatives’ from the theatre district, performing arts venues, and museums. A lunch time walk, could get you to the fashion district. I used the opportunity of this trip, my first one back in 2 years, to do a look-see.

Foot traffic was way down, and suits or business attire was shockingly absent. I don’t think I saw more than 6 men in suits, and no women in what I would call formal business attire. The most formal women’s wear I saw was on SA’s in upscale boutiques and shops. The area was overrun by uni and college students. The young women looked like Hailey Beiber wannabes with loose baggy jeans or painter pants (lots of Dickie’s), snug sweater crop tops (long sleeved, midriff baring), long straight hair, and thick soled sneakers. If they weren’t wearing this uniform, they were in black leggings, a t-shirt, any sneaker that has been popular in the past 6 years, and hair piled in a messy bun on the top of their head. A smaller side trend amongst the young’uns was a very oversized button down worn as a dress with a sweater vest (usually argyle) over top and bicycle shorts (barely showing) under. The look was grounded with stompy lug soled/platform footwear - usually combat boot style.

The mom’s or other women ‘of a certain age’ who were out and about were in cropped looser fit trousers with blouses, button downs, or loose tops made from wovens, but cut like a t-shirt. Full skirts, and some bias cut silky skirts, with t-shirts, but not many dresses. Lots of loafers, Birks, traditional white leather sneakers, and slide sandals. Skinny jeans and black leggings still represented. Too warm for toppers, but in the pm hoodies on under 30’s and cropped tweed jackets, or jean jackets on ‘not’ 30 yo women :-)

Although no one looked unkempt, hair was long and cut straight across the bottom. Long bobs (below shoulder length) on ‘older’ women, and mid-back to waist length on younger women. There were some symmetrical undercuts with the long center hank of hair tied in a top knot. Short hair styles were long on top, but shaved neck, and ears showing in a style reminiscent of Vidal Sassoon. I did not see any shag hair cuts. Hair did not appear to have a lot of product or styling (curls) but maybe some straightening? Defined brows and obvious long fake eyelashes on young women, but not at all on anyone over 30. Some obvious bleached white blonde with dark roots, but still long hair. Natural looking dark browns, black, and dirty blonds - not a lot of crazy colour or rainbow hair.

I have lots of other thoughts and observations (the men! The street scape!) but this post is long enough. Also, these are just my observations and thoughts on a very small part of one North American city. If you’ve read this far, I hope you find it interesting
