I wear outside clothes to work or when socialising. Otherwise I’m super casual…essentially activewear everywhere and I have been caught by my boss and other people in my running shorts in the supermarket, but it hasn’t made me change my ways.

I definitely have inside/outside clothes, always have. It probably goes back to my Catholic school days—that uniform came off ASAP when I got home.

You look amazing! The trousers are a very cool colour. I saw some faux leather pants in the wild the other day and caught myself liking them. They’re something that’s taken a lot of eye-adjustment for me but I think I’ve finally come around.

Alas, I think I’m moving in the opposite direction style-wise: gear as default, jeans for “cultural” occasions. Almost all of my socializing is hiking/camping/park play dates, so I’m mostly focused on staying warm and dry. The school I sub at most often is very project/play oriented with lots of time spent outdoors, so office clothes make less sense than utility clothes. This has pushed me, at least, to buy somewhat cuter, more coordinated outdoor gear. But I really have to sit on my hands not to buy more jeans, chunky knitwear, cute oxfords and Mary Janes, or floaty linen skirts/dresses. I have more than I have time to wear! Looking forward to gardening and picnicking in floaty linen come summer, but I’m still stuck in puffers and boots for now.

Love your outfit Carla, and the direction your style is taking.
For myself, I think I dress casually pulled together all the time except when ‘messy’ jobs are on the agenda. I noticed your lovely scarf, and that made me think of how rarely I’ve added a scarf to my outfit in the last few years…maybe time to rectify that.

What a great outfit. I really like this style direction you've gone, the non-jeans, elegant casual direction. I am kind of going the opposite way, thinking I might finally go a little athleisure once in a while. My inside and outside wear are basically the same, except outside I replace my house shoes with outdoor footwear.

Love the outfit, Carla -- those pants add sophistication and style to any combination!

To your question -- I'm still wearing a lot more "work from home" clothes than anything else which during the pandemic has been a combo of gear (merino hoodies, leggings), and my previous jeans/ top (or sweater) at-home uniform. It's tricky because like Bonnie or Lana, I might find myself out in the garden or hiking or out on my bike on a moment's notice. So I can't dress as dressily as my usual preference would be. Yet I still distinguish between "real" clothes (your "outside" clothes) and "at home" clothes and what I'm really after is an at-home uniform that works in (almost) all eventualities -- and I've yet to hit on it. Hmmmm.

Love your outfit, Carla.
I maintain two wardrobes - one for inside and another for outside. I used to have three before Covid, I had “work”, “weekend “, “home” clothes.

I don’t wear my outside clothes at home, it’s not practical as I share my house with two lovely cats. They are cuddly and shed a lot. My outside clothes is of a better quality. I wash my inside clothes more often, need to replace it often, too and I don’t like to spend much on it. I like this separation of my wardrobe, somehow it makes more special to change into my outside clothes, put on makeup and a bit of a perfume before stepping out of the house even if only for a walk or a coffee with a friend.

My "inside" vs "outside" clothing has most definitely evolved since Covid. A very distinct separation - no longer an overlapping Venn diagram but more like cell mitosis (?).

Inside - joggers/sweats and comfy tees, with a fleece pullover on cool days. I'll wear these on short walks in the neighborhood.

Outside - my "outside" is just medical appointments - but I wear my nicer stuff - not dressier but nicer fabrications and more style-istic cuts and colors. Even dresses which were practically non-existent in my prior life.

Love your outfit for card playing. I have come to the same realization Runcarla. Although my uniform is the same, a knit top or sweater with slim pants, the fabrication of the garments are quite different @ home vs outside of my home. At home I wear slim knit pants/joggers/leggings with slightly oversized unfitted tops. I don't like feeling constrained in my clothes @ home and I don't find jeans that comfortable. Outside of the home I prefer to look a bit more polished but not particularly dressy except for occasional events. So it's nicer jeans or occasionally trousers with more fitted tops. I keep trying to merge the two in a quest for a smaller wardrobe but I have come to the conclusion I need to view them as separate capsules and that's OK.

Great job! You are wearing olive and black just like Angie's blog and this version is lovely. As to your question about outside clothes, I have to consider whether any outing with dh also includes a hike. At home, lunch in a nice restaurant and a hike is often on our agenda and that influences what I wear. I've come up with a nicer pair of hikers, sweater or tee depending on the weather, and a dressy topper for the restaurant with a sporty jacket for the hike. I keep hiking shoes and hat in the car. So I've got a lot of clothes for dressier occasions which are rare and a few workhorses for our usual outings. A bit off, number wise, but we do take short trips to cities every month or so that give me a chance to dress up a bit more. And our weekly card game gives me another opportunity. I'll also wear my "good" clothes around the house just because I like them.

Really chic outfit RC! One of my all time faves.

I am the same as Rachylou, change shoes, add a jacket, scarf, jewelry and head out. I don’t like changing my base outfit during the day, so I wear something versatile that will work for all my activities. I do have certain clothes that are more creative/dressier for special events like a silky duster or velvet coat.

Love that outfit so much!
To me "outside clothes" are anything I'd wear outside my neighborhood for a non athletic reason. In general, I'm not comfortable dressing less than smart casual, even for running errands- and don't see any reason that I need to! Usually though, I do my errand running after work, so I don't have to make trip into town on my day off.

If I'm in my neighborhood hiking, hanging out with my neighbors, or paddleboarding- I'll wear my Athleta skorts and tanks. It's even ok if I'm hiking or paddling outside my neighborhood and I go into a shop afterward.

I can relate somehow. Like Jenny, and because of my work, am (in general) a dressier dresser overall and was fortunate enough to go to my office on a daily basis even during the last 2 years of pandemic-so errands and shopping was/is always connected on my way to work.
So, is much harder for me to dress "true casual" in a way to look&feel good, put together and myself (as in line with my dressier side).
Still, in the last1,5 decade my old strict business wear started feeling dated (and uncomfy:-)) for me, so slowly switched to business casual and then even to smart casual (but mostly all neutrals and no blue jeans or sneakers).
Then, during pandemic I started wearing city sneaks to the office, too-and felt OK- BUT I just couldn't succumb for the blue jeans yet:-). I always buy them, with thinking will wear on my days off or other than to the office. I have to add I do more comfy then jeans for my lounge wear at home and we walk our doggie in the fields to which I wear more functional clothes. IRL -I am so unused to wear/style blue jeans that I simply don't feel them---and so, it's very rare to pull them out- I only dress them max. on vacations and /or for travelling-1-2x/year!!!
Not sure what was trying to explain with all above, guess was just rambling around your subject, BTW, I love your outfit very much!

Even in lockdown I wear 'real' clothes everyday because I feel happiest in those clothes (I change to gear when doing housework or exercising). I like to think that everyday is special.

I adore this outfit on you and hope the happiness factor is through the roof with it and a big yes vote to adding more practical yet slightly more dressy items into your wardrobe.

What a fab outfit! I love those pants so much. That outfit could go almost anywhere.

Like Rachy, I mostly don’t wear my joggers or my more sweatshirt-y hoodies out and about, except for maybe a quick run to buy milk or something. Unless I’m out on a camping trip. Then it’s nearly all gear and items like that.

Since I got home from my big road trip (6 weeks away, mostly hiking and in gear about 80% of the time), I’ve been dressing to leave the house even if I don’t plan to. Spring is short here and I find myself wanting to wear my nice wardrobe after so many weeks of the same grungy hiking pants, tees, muddy shoes, and old jeans.

I admire your ability to incorporate dress trousers into a casual life — I just can’t get there. Big dogs with no boundaries and rough paws are a factor, but I also have a horrible time finding trousers that fit and that I like, so I default to jeans and some trusty chino styles. But I also much prefer the structure of jackets over cardigans so I can balance the casual nature of denim bottoms with a jacket if mood or situation dictates.

I consider almost my entire wardrobe what you are calling “outside clothes”. I have gone to work in my rooms 3 days a week for the entire pandemic, putting PPE over work clothes if I needed to see someone in person rather than call or video call them- as a family doctor I do not wear scrubs. Remember that the numbers of cases in our country was way lower than other countries until this year’s Omicron. So in some places doctors like me wear scrubs but I do not. And I prefer a similar level of dressiness for shopping or socialising. I only wear much more casual for neighbourhood walks or gardening. In the past 10 years I have bought only 2 pair “lounge pants” and both were mistakes. I just don’t feel like me in them, I feel sloppy and awful. Just my personal preference.

Maybe 'outside clothes' are just clothes, that you can put off whenever you want, outside and in the room

I agree with Jessi—this is a fab glam look, and could be worn to a variety of places.

It took me a while to figure out if you meant clothes to wear outdoors, such as for walks, picnics, etc, or for going out for something that might take place indoors. I’ve decided on the latter.

This might be the clue to why my style seems so dressy to people here on ylf: I don’t wear much of anything at all, so to step out the door at all, I don’t have the option of “I’ll just keep on the jeans/sweats I’m wearing”. Putting on clothes comes with the assumption that people will see me. Right now I don’t have the kind of events where your outfit would fit in, so I stay a touch below that.
