So funny AJ- that is exactly how I have been feeling- soo many boxes- I cannot keep count. Great to have you back!!!
Trix, I have taken advantage of that endless deal and have some La Canediennes coming. I have tried on many and the calves are all too big. I may have to get a dress pair and a more casual everyday pair with more traction.
I just ordered these:
http://www.shoebuy.com/merrell.....349/443786
They look like a good color but who knows?
My husband is amazed at how diligent I am, every time he sees me on the computer he asks: More boots?

Oops, correction, Endless.com *is* still offering its $25-off-$125-for-select-styles promotion. The soles of the LC boots do vary a lot from style to style (this I know from my own boot-buying marathon), so you may have to hunt around and compare.

I love my Santana boots too -- I've had a pair of waterproof, just-above-the-ankle Santana boots for several years and have worn them to death (which is why I'm looking for new boots now). My pair is on the dressy end of Santana boots, so their soles aren't so good on ice, but if I could find them in my size again, I'd buy another pair in a second.

I bought two pair of boots for winter in Lithuania -- a pair of La Canadienne gray patent boots and a pair of Santana Aquatherm Deena boots. I love the LC boots because they are so stylish but they didn't have much traction. The Santana boots were warm, had good traction in snow and crunchy ice (really slick ice was still a problem) and were half the price of the LC boots. They are on sale right now on endless.com. I bought the coffee color thinking they would be brown -- but they are quite reddish in color and they are also quite shiny.

When I was trying to find a pair of boots, I ordered so many boots that I too was embarrassed that the neighbors kept seeing boxes and boxes on my porch! But the variety on line is so much better than what I found in stores -- and the fits are so varied that it took a lot of experimentation to find the right pairs.

I'm in the same boat! I don't know how they are for traction, but in regards to your worry that La Canadienne boots are too expensive...Endless.com has had some really good sale prices (unfortunately their $25-off sale for boots >$125 just ended). Zappos.com also will have periodic sales, more in the 10%-20%-off range. They seem to rotate on and off -- for a couple days, maybe five or six of the current season's styles will be on sale, then a few days after that sale ends, a different set of styles will be discounted, so it pays to check back if there's one particular boot that you really want. As an outdoor retailer, Sierra Trading Post may also have good winter-worthy boots from previous seasons at good prices.

Oh Thank you sooo much, I wish that I could try them all on, I am embarrassed at how many boots I have ordered and returned. I think I want brown although do not care for the off white showing. I am also concerned about waterproof suede. Is it really???

La Canadienne boots are pretty expensive, but really weatherproof. The Alexa seems to have some serious traction:
http://piperlime.gap.com/brows.....=484909002

I have an Ugg-like pair that I wear to Utah in the winter, and they have enough traction for me.

Perhaps you could wait to see if they go on sale?

Or how about these Bastiens:
http://www.endless.com/Bastien.....ds=bastien

More sporty, North Face is reliable:

Those look like they would be at home in your closet! I really like them.
Another idea would be to look at LLBean. I have some suede, rubber-soled boots lace-up from LLBean that are streamlined (nothing like Uggs!), and have a fleecey lining that have seen lots of snow and ice for years and still look almost new. They have lots of sales. Keep checking the thrift and consignment shops too. When you have something definite in mind it seems to turn up. Today I was thrilled to find the black leather, nearly flat, narrow calf boots I've been looking for on consignment. They are Donald J.Pliner and made in Spain, new in the bag in the box.

I am in desperate need of some very practical winter boots. I need them to be waterproof and with enough traction as to not slip on all the ice that is around here much of the winter. All the practical ones are so ugly! Does anyone have any ideas?
I found these, what do you think?
http://www.endless.com/Timberl.....B001U89MOG
La Canadienne are pretty but most are too expensive and not much in the way of traction.
