Our winters were always mild but they seem to be starting later. It is still basically summer weather here, although I (still cold after all these years) sometimes wear a light jacket in the morning. I have lots of light jackets and coats chomping at the bit.

I am distressed —the combo of perimenopause heat parade and the warming trends has eliminated the need for my beloved cushy sweaters.

These days I wear them more like scarves, draped over a thinner coat.

I need to have long puffers to keep my legs warm but one that at not overstuffed with down. Surprisingly hard to find in a winter coat.

Do not envy folks living in the wetter upper west.

Suz and I live in the same climate and I'm nodding along - we need A LOT of outerwear variety. All sorts of lengths, thicknesses, dress codes, purposes, hoods, and the list goes on! Most Seattleites have a full coat closet for good reason :)

Weatherproof footwear goes down well around here. WET! No need for snow boots all the time though.

Global warming has changed our SUMMERS - not Winters, really. We need real Summer clothing these days since it's much hotter. and our rain can be torrential at times! Tropical. We are all installing HVACS.

I moved from the northeast to the southeast and the winters are quite different. NC has a warmer and shorter winter season compared to NJ. My heaviest coats were not worn at all last year. Same for my heaviest sweaters. And I never wore by knee high boots (although I could just be off that style for the moment since I'm favoring wide legs and I normally wear my knee high boots with skinny jeans).

Shopping for the winter months has been a challenge since I moved. Old habits die hard and I am still learning that I do NOT need to look at sweaters, especially heavier weight sweaters anymore. I have two Vince sweaters from NAS I may have to return because I'm not sure we'll ever get cold enough for me to wear them.

The other shopping and dressing challenge has been learning to layer in the fall and winter! It's not uncommon for our weather to increase 20-40F from morning to midday. That's two completely different styles of dress for me, when we go from say 50F in the morning to 75F by afternoon (which was today's temperature ranges). In NJ I could wear the same outfit all day and just pop on/off a jacket as needed because there wasn't much of a temperature difference from morning to midday. But in NC you really need to layer your tops not just your outerwear over a top because there's a much larger swing in temperatures. That's been a big change for me.

I noticed it, too. I regret buying two things last year - a midi extra warm puffer and a pair of expensive warm leather boots. I worn each maybe a couple of time last winter. I sold my snow boots and do not plan to replace them, opting for a pair of regular casual boots. I’m going to sell my thick wool sweaters, I find them too warm to wear under puffers.

I live in a coastal city and our climate is rather mild and relatively humid with a lot of wind. I actually notice the global warming much more during summer season. But winters have perhaps become warmer too. For where I live, I never normally need thick warm boots or super warm puffers. It works with regular short booties and medium warm puffers. However, as it is usually windy, the temperature feels a lot colder than it is. Wool coats without some kind of windbreaker-layer are usually not enough. I don’t know if I experience any change in this respect. I often layer a thin puffer jacket under a wool coat during the coldest month. But most often, I wear a long medium warm puffer coat. I just bought a new trench coat which includes a removable thin puffer jacket. I think it will be perfect for our colder part of fall and maybe some winter days. I will show you in another thread.

Our winters the past couple years have not been noticeably warmer. They have been wetter, though, which is great. This past summer was unrelentingly hot, and it stayed hot well into October. So maybe our winters will be shorter and wetter.

I might have enough winter coats. I joke that I have as many coats as the Inuit have words for snow. When we go to events downtown in winter, our walks to and from parking are really cold and windy. And I still need very warm gear for birding. Birding is just like hiking, except for the walking part. We’re standing around for extended periods, slowly freezing. :( When our son and his partner lived in Minneapolis, my husband said we should go see the Great Grey Owl in winter, so in preparation for that I bought what Patagonia described as their warmest coat. Then they moved to Indiana and I have never worn the coat. And then we saw the owl this past May, so I don’t have to go back to Minnesota in winter!!!

Ha, I have learned that in the my new location, the "mild" and wet west coast of Canada, I seem to need more types of outerwear than I ever needed before! And I have been amassing a bigger coat collection.

What I do not need are true snow boots. I still own mine but they are in storage. I can't imagine when I might wear them. We do get snow out here -- more, I believe, than used to be the case -- but my regular waterproof boots with lug soles do just fine. I don't need the insulation.

Because we do get a few weeks of snow and a lot of rain, I do still need waterproof footwear and at least one pair of more rugged boots (as opposed to dressier booties or even boots) for my suburban rambles. Boots that I can walk through puddles in, or wet leaves, or muck. And I need a true hiking boot, which I never used back east. (Trail runners were enough there for my hikes.)

I still wear what I call my "Ontario" parka for up to two weeks a year, especially if I walk at night, when temperatures can drop substantially. But mostly I wear lightweight puffer coats either on their own or layered under wool coats, which I also wear on their own.

For the rain, I have multiple types of raincoat -- some gear, some more dressy, one packable for travel.

I also wear and own a bunch of hats/ scarves/ gloves.

I honestly have noticed no change. I'm still looking for better slippers and indoor shoes for winter. I've gotten some white wool tights, old stock. I finally got a good raincoat, but that was thanks to a very lucky listing on ebay. Sources for a lot of the stuff I need and want don't really seem to exist!

It can still get very cold in Chicago - polar vortex, anyone? - but we don't get anywhere near the amount of snow that we used to. I grew up on Lake Erie, and lake effect snow is a real thing. But even being right on the shore of Lake Michigan, we now get very few heavy snowfalls. I gave away my serious winter boots two years ago after realizing that I hadn't worn them for the previous two years. The snow line seems to have moved a hundred miles north. Or more.

Those of you who miss a cold winter should move to Colorado. It is cold. I freeze after balmy Kansas. In Kansas people were growing banana trees outside. All year. armadillos were appearing. I was picking blooming roses in December. I did not own any items with sleeves. Now I own lots of sleeved items and wear them with toppers. I have bought additional heavy coats.
I think some places are moving faster into Gobal Warming than others. If I really want more cold and snow I can go to a mountain town.

There is still plenty of snow. It is not unusual to get over 10 inches in September. But I understand. It varies from place to place. Most of the year I can't wear wool but I am wearing it now...a cold December morning.

It sounds like our weather is similar to yours (Michigan) but I don't really think I have changed how I dress for it. I used to need heavy duty outerwear when my kids played sports - SO cold sitting through a snowy football or lacrosse game! - but don't very often spend time outside in the winter any more.

I have also found since menopause that I can't wear super warm sweaters except for those really deep winter days. I just get too warm and, like Dee, don't like the bulk under coats.

It has been very mild so far - we will see what this winter brings!

Definitely winters here have become much milder and with less snow. Last winter, I barely wore my heavy-duty puffer coat, I mostly got by with my lighter-weight thinner down puffer. I also didn’t really need my heavier, warmer winter boots much either, my lined, waterproof ankle boots seemed to be sufficient enough. Winters these days tend to be icier or rainier than before, so keeping dry outdoors is just as important as staying warm

I’m now a big fan of zip vests whether fleece, puff, or quilted. They add an extra layer with little bulk, act as a topper for extra style and give me the option of wearing them unzipped if it starts getting too warm. I also no longer buy chunky-knit sweaters or cardigans, I find them just too warm and cumbersome these days to wear underneath my outerwear.

Ha, now watch how this winter becomes the exception and turns out to be a nasty, snowy, cold one, I won’t be getting rid of any of my heavy duty stuff just in case.

I hear you! Global warming is not a joke. My winter style has changed without me being aware of it - it just happened. I recently noticed that I have stopped buying winter boots and heavy sweaters. I can spend the winter in ankle booties, thin wool sweaters and even jeans, or cotton pants. It never happened before! I have two puffers, one mid-weight and the other heavier for the occasional icy day and they are enough. In 2021 I bought a pair of beautiful snow boots. I wore them a few times and then promoted them to "inside" shoes - I keep them at work and wear them when the office is freezing.

Chalk it up to global warming, but winter these days doesn’t seem to be the same, and outfitting myself for cold weather requires a strategic rethink!

When I first joined YLF a dozen years ago, I did live in a place where winter was a Big Deal, and during the coldest 2-3 weeks in January/February -40degC was not unusual. Usual daytime highs for months would be in the -20’sC/below 0F.

Winters these days (after a move/relocation) are more moderate - and getting warmer. The coldest weeks are -20degF, but most of the time daytime temps are -5 to -10. There isn’t much snow until well after Christmas, with most of it arriving in March, and gone by April. There’s no need for heavy cloth coats, monster parkas, and clompy boots.

I own some items with cold weather ratings a factor - however, my warmest puffer is rated for -17C/0F, and though they are lined, cloth (wool) coats are thinner. I can wear unlined boots (and even sneakers!) with good wool socks - and have warm feet. I do own a pair of boots rated to -25degC, but they are super lightweight, and more important with our warm winters - waterproof! Hats, gloves/mitts, and scarves still factor. I own ‘puffy pants’ but never even wore them last winter.

Does winter weather impact your wardrobe? Are you having to re-think how you dress for your cold weather season? Are you expanding or contracting your collection of outerwear? Is retail keeping up with the climate that affects your geographical area?
