I've started buying inexpensive stretchy poly-cotton long-sleeved tees, a couple of sizes smaller than what I would normally wear, to use as layers in chillier weather. The particular ones I buy cost £3.50 from Primark (in the UK). I also buy close-fitting camisoles made from a similar material. These days I almost always wear a camisole + long-sleeved tee + sweater or other long-sleeved top, sometimes also a cardigan or jacket, and often a scarf.

If I'm going to be outside for a long time I have taken to wearing fleece-lined tights underneath one of my looser pairs of jeans. A little bit constricting but less bulky that my long johns, plus no annoying ankle gap. When leg warmers became popular again I got a couple of pairs as gifts, which I sometimes wear under my jeans. I also bought a plain black pair which I have treated like gloves for my legs on a couple of occasions when going to an event where I want to wear sheer tights and heels rather than boots. I wear them while walking to the destination, then slip them off and put them in my coat pocket with my gloves.

Una, that scale is hilarious, especially the thought that it takes a -50F temp to freeze political hot air. That almost makes me long for the next ice age!

But I do have a few suggestions, Jurocha, for helping you stay reasonably warm this winter.

First, hats, scarves, and mitts (not gloves) are non-negotiable when the temperatures fall below -10C/15F. Frostbite is a real possibility, especially if there is any wind. And said items need to be made of wool, not cotton or acrylic. Keeping your head, hands, and feet warm are essential if you don't want to feel cold.

Second, as you've found, layers work, but you have to guard against overheating because perspiration causes dampness which causes you to feel cold and chilled when you go outside or stop moving. If your body gets damp and cold, you'll start shivering which is the first sign of hypothermia, a condition which can actually kill you. Silk and cashmere work because they self-regulate; they will insulate you from the cold when you are outside, but won't cause you to overheat when you are indoors. That's why silk underwear is popular with those of us who walk to work in cold temps but work in heated offices. Synthetic "wicking" fabrics like polypropylene underwear and fleece also work because perspiration is "wicked" away from the skin so you never feel damp. Wool works much the same way and provides a great deal of insulation for its weight. Cotton is not a good fabric choice for cold weather--the mantra of many outdoor people is "cotton kills"; that's probably a bit extreme, but you need to be realistic about when and where to use cotton underlayers.

Third, you need good footwear. Some people like to wear boots with insulation; I've always preferred unlined boots because I don't have to worry about the insulation getting damp which leads to cold feet. I also like to wear wool socks in my boots in winter, not cotton or nylon ones. Smartwool and Icebreaker are two good brands.

Fashion is fun, but freezing isn't. It's possible, though, to look good even when you are bundled up against the winter as long as you are realistic about what clothes need to do to protect you.

I just sent Alaska Girl's relative temperature scale to my son and his wife who life in northern Chicago suburbs. We've been emailing this week about the weather conditions we can expect on our next trip there.

So far it doesn't look like it will be 0°--the temps we had our first Christmas trip there. After living in California a couple of decades one's blood does get thin.

Thanks for posting this.

Hilarious temp rating scale from Alaskagirl, thanks for the chuckles.

I am a big fan of Uniqlo heattech and Cuddle duds as thermals underneath everything I wear in cold months. I also pop on wool socks if they can fit with my boots. I'll wear from 3-5 layers on my top half.

-thermal layer
-LS T
-knit top
-blazer/jacket/cardigan
-scarf

My bottom layer is usually 2
-thermal layer (or fleece lined hose)
-jeans (or trousers)

Then I'll add a wool coat on top of it all for outdoors. Also a hat and gloves. When it's super cold I'll swap the wool coat for a down puffer coat.

And I usually reach for tall boots over shorter one's, because the leather covers more leg on windy days.

Weather: 7 Celsius/44F, blue skies, but snow is expected in the evening.
Comfort: 9
Warmth: 8.5
Style: Running errands (paying bills, going to the post office and market」and working from home. Super casual, but I still need to be put together to venture out of the house.

Issues: This shearling coat has very narrow armholes, which makes layering blazers underneath a no-go. Although temperatures are relatively high now, I don't want to redress for the evening, when I have a dentist appointment. So the outfit has to keep me warm at night and during the expected 1st snowfall of the year. First snowfall is magical, but also scares me shitless: I haven't yet managed to be properly dressed for it and I usually end up freezing while waiting for public transportation. I am not feeling the "beenie" vibe; I can't arrange it in a way I feel OK and refusing to wear beanies or hats contribute to me feeling colder sooner...

Layers breakdown:
4 layers. Top: cotton long-sleeved, summer weight striped sweater, wool navy cardigan, wool thin beige scarf and shearling beige coat. Bottom: Sneaker socks, knee-high boots and skinny jeans.

I will post a reassessment later and let you guys know whether it passed the test of -2C/28F and snow...

UPDATE:

Reassessment: I was warmer than I initially thought and the outfit worked fine for the first snowfall. I did have to forget not feeling the hat vibe and pulling out of the bag the combo: knit gloves and beret. I had a splitting headache due to the initial resistance to cover my head from the cold...

Hey @Lavinia! I got the 12 years-old (I'm 1,53m, 45kg). It's pretty warm and comfy.

I bought a pair of leg warmers during my first winter here and wear them to threads. You just reminded me how cool they were; I had forgotten it altogether (first winter is quite traumatic... hehehe). I need to get another pair!

Jurocha, if you don't like to wear layers under your jeans perhaps try legwarmers. I bought my first pair two years ago and I swear by them! You can remove them far easier than any underlayers when you're warm enough.

I even go so far as to wear legwarmers under bell bottoms for extra insulation. The "bell" hides the bulk and you'te toasty warm When indoors (e.g. in the office), I just take my shoes off and remove the legwarmers and voila - I can now aclimate to the indoor temps.

Oh, and I love your idea of the boy's cardi from LaRedodute! What size did you get btw?

P.S. I am practically you neighbour - i am from Slovenia :D

Una, that list is so funny and true:)
Here's a contribution:
Weather: 17F/-8C. Damp with a wind chill. Night with temps dropping.
Comfort: 9
Warmth: 8 (see Issues)
Style: I wanted to look holiday festive for a professional production of A Christmas Carol at a night at the theatre and restaurant dining and had planned to wear my tuxedo suit, sequined top, and low patent pumps. It was just too cold. At the last minute I decided to wear a favorite beaded wool skirt and wool turtleneck for more warmth. I felt dressed appropriately although most women were in pants with festive tops. I saw one Christmas sweater.
Layers: Top: silk long-sleeved tee layered under the wooly turtleneck with a tissueweight wool scarf added for more warmth.
Bottom: tights, slip, and wool skirt and tall boots.
Topper: heavy and lined knee length trench, belted. Gloves.
Issues: I removed the coat and gloves inside but didn't check the coat. Even in the packed theater I was cold and ended up leaving the scarf and putting the coat back on to be comfortable. My puffer coat would have been a better choice walking to and from the car. Maybe a hat.
The boots I'm wearing desperately need replacing. I doctored these with super glue and Sharpie to get by. I know the skirt may be too long for the boots and scarf is a bit much.

Lol alaskagirl. I grew up in the PNW, went to school in Colorado, married a Minnesotan, and lived in Fairbanks Alaska for a few years. Your chart is so true. We are now in 'chilly' Northern California and laugh at the gloves, hat, and puffy jackets we see when the temp drops below 65F. DH used to clear the snow off the cars in shorts, tee, & sorrels in AK - in temps cold enough that the cars needed to be plugged in.

That scale is hilarious!

That middle layer is the key for me. I wish I would have figured it out years ago. I am not a cardigan person, but boy are they warm. I just have to remember to remove the inner layer instead of the cute layer.

I wear silk camisoles sometimes, but they don't feel very soft against my skin. The first layer in my experience needs to be snug in order for it to make you feel warm. I haven't noticed that they catch on my cotton tshirts.

I wear one of these rayon camisoles almost every day unless it is really cold then I wear a tight cotton cami.

That may well have been my rant, and I love this idea ... I don't know how inspiring my hoodie and sweatpants will be, so I will love to see ideas from others and learn how it's done. I did hit Mark's for some thermal underthings and got a cute pair of ankle boots similar to the ones in this link (couldn't find link for actual pair) and they have been super-warm and dry for those days when it's cold but the sorels are overkill. they look very cute with skinnies and tuck nicely under straight and boot cuts.

Regarding silk underlayers... I never tried them and I'm afraid I wouldn't be comfortable with anything underneath a jeans (sometimes when is truly cold - below -10 and humid - I put on regular, very thin hose and this is already a struggle; not only with skinnies but also with regular pants. Let's say I have "fuzzy" knees and hate to feel restrained). But the cami might really be a good solution as a underlayer.

How does a silk underlayer behave under a cotton shirt? Does it feel alright? Does it get static? Can you wear it under other narrow shirts or does it feels OK only when you are wearing a sweater or a loose shirt? Silk underlayer advocates, please shine a light on these issues.

I second the recommendation for silk underlayers, as dustt and E pointed out.

The only problem I've had with the long silk underwear is that it isn't very stretchy, so it can get tight in the knees. What I have is 100% silk--maybe I need something with spandex in it also.

I would be lost without my silk base layer - long johns under pants and scoop neck long sleeve top under everything - I had to buy all new ones this year as I lost quite a bit of weight last year and in order for the long john's to remain invisible they need to be rather snug. I also tried the Land's End theraskins heat base layers this week - they run about a size large - so I sized down but so far I'm really liking them as well!!
http://www.landsend.com/shop/w.....ar/-/N-fyh

With the wind chill today it was 11F/-12c this afternoon - it was definitely time to break out the base layers!!

Great idea, Jurocha! This thread will be very helpful to me, a newer YLFer who lives in the midwest. We've had only a couple weeks of consistently cold weather, and I'm already feeling challenged by trying to dress attractively without sacrificing warmth. I definitely run cold and often feel chilly even at home (I'm writing this while snuggled under two blankets and the cat.) I look forward to exchanging winter style ideas with my fellow polar dwellers!

Lucy, as an emigre from the midwest to northern California, I like to sneer at the wimps who wear down coats and gloves here as soon as the temperature gets below 60F. :)

I've heard great things about Uniqlo's Heatech line of undergarments - they have the regular long underwear but also camisoles and slips and such. Might be a good thin first layer.

I love how different countries have different versions of what's cold! Diana is shrugging nonchalantly at -15C, without a puffer coat! I complain bitterly on the odd day each year when it gets below +15C !! From what I see, the Canadians and others face extreme cold, yet do so with great style. By the time I hit under 10C I've lost all sight of fashion and I'm in the ski gear!

This is a fun idea! And as it turns out, I actually took a photo of my outerwear yesterday (which I don't usually bother to do).

Yesterday it was around 45F/7C, so not terribly cold, but it was rainy in the morning and got cooler at night.

My layers are (from inside to out):
on top:
-summer weight short sleeved blouse
-lightweight cashmere pullover
-wool coat with quilted lining (very warm) and silk/cashmere pashmina-style scarf

on the bottom:
-cotton flannel pants
-regular thickness cotton blend socks
-thick patent leather boots (waterproof for rain)

I also had a knit hat and gloves in my bag but I did not use them. The coat has a hood, and I stuck my hands in my pockets, which was sufficiently warm.

If it was colder, I would:
-add a thermal tee or cami underneath
-wear a heavier sweater
-use a bigger and warmer scarf
-wear warmer, thicker wool socks
-probably wear a longer coat to cover more of my thighs, although this coat is heavy enough for colder temps. I don't own a puffer, by the way. The coldest it gets is around 5F/-15C here (although windchills can make it feel colder).

May I also recommend silk as an excellent first layer option? My silk long johns (i.e. leggings) keep my warm even when it's really cold out and yet I don't overheat indoors wearing them, and they're slim enough to wear even under tights and my skinniest jeans. And my silk camis keep my core warm but comfy. If you got a fitted silk long john style tee I bet that'd work with your layers and keep you warm!

More ISSUES with layers worn on the outfit published on the 2nd post: After a whole day, it became heavy and uncomfortable to have a fitted cotton t-shirt under a regular, rather loose t-shirt (and all of it topped by a fitted cardigan and a blazer). My WARMTH factor dropped to 7 after removing the fitted cotton t-shirt I was wearing under everything and also the cotton cardigan.

CHANGES & SOLUTIONS: I'm wearing a variation of the same outfit today; I just changed the sweatshirt blazer for its gray duplicate and the loose tee. I left the under fitted cotton tee out and swapped the cotton cardigan for a boy's wool one (http://www.laredoute.com/boys-.....06513.aspx).

REASSESSMENT AFTER CHANGES: The new outfit has only 4 layers, but is as warm (9) as the original one (that had 5 layers). But is much more comfortable. The boy's wool cardigan is more comfortable to movement than the thin, fitted cotton cardigan but is still streamlined enough to hide below the sweatshirt blazer.

I'm posting exactly what I have in mind for a "style/warmth register" below.
***
WEATHER: 5 Celsius, windy and cloudy, daytime

COMFORT: 10 (on a scale from 0 to 10)
WARMTH: 9

STYLE: You fabbers comments are welcome! I feel this outfit is very "me", but not necessarily suits the image I want to project. At the moment, I aim at more composed and grown-up and shorts have too much of sassy for this image.
- IF I PEEL THE LAYERS... due to different heating setting indoors, I choose to sport it either as Pic 1 or Pic 3. (I prefer the cardigan to remain "invisible", since I'm not a big fan of cardigans as-is).

LAYERS BREAK DOWN: 5 layers
- Top: White sleeveless fitted cotton tee (not seen), cotton tee with graphics, cotton fitted cardigan, sweatshirt blazer.
- Bottom: 100 tights, knee high black socks (not seen), tall unlined boots, poly shorts.

ISSUES: I didn't pick a scarf because of the tall collar of the coat and this was a mistake. A thin scarf wouldn't be difficult to layer under this tall collar and it would insulate me better and avoid wind chill on the back of my neck.

I couldn't find the exact post and I can't remember the username of the fabber who posted it, but... about a month or so ago, one of the forum members posted a rant about dressing in cold weather and how frustrating it can be if you want to remain stylish and is cold and snowy outside. A lot of us chipped in, me included, and we recommended layering hosiery under jeans, investing on a wool or puffer coat so on and so forth.

In my attempt to find this particular post, I found that this topic - staying stylish and warm in winter - keeps reappearing (as seen here, for example: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....tradictory). As someone who was born below the Equator and move to cold weather only some 4 years ago... I still consider myself a layering-newbie. I thought, though, that we could all profit from recording our layering/winter outfits (and how well they performed in keeping us warm) in a single post. Others would critique the style and we could all learn from one another's comments. What do you guys say? Anyone want to attempt that?
