What terrific tips and product ideas! I don't have particular problems with dry skin, but my skin is much drier than when I was younger for sure.

We run humidifiers all during heating season. I try very, very hard to shower and bathe in tepid/cool water (although something in me LOVES a truly hot bath or shower :-(). I'm sometimes sloppy about a lot of skin care but I always, always use a lotion after bathing, and always a cream moisturizer beore bed. I drink water and fluids frequently, too. Count me in on using oils like jojoba a lot of the time. I don't have a history of cancer in the family and don't use sunscreen very much, but the tinted moisturizer I wear for daytime has SPF. I also love coconut oil for moisturizing. And I have Babylips and Burts Bees and other lip soothers stuffed all over the place.

I have been taking more fish oil caps in the past few months, and we eat fish pretty often (I love it and it's something I am good at cooking, yay!). Oh, and I try to cover lots of skin up when I'm out, wear gloves and scarves and hats pretty religiously.

Karymk, I also do the Lansinoh thing... I give it to the kids to use too, as they get the worst dry lips. The other product I love is Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. And coconut oil is a great moisturiser!

I have dry body skin year round and worse in the winter and have tried everything, cheap and costly. I've recently tried something new and am a total convert! Nivea Extended Moisture -- $8 at Rite-Aid, and it note only keeps me moisturized, but it has also given me (for the first time ever) truly soft skin on my upper arms and elbows. (I used to suffer from the dry bumps.) This is really amazing lotion. I've been using it for 3 weeks and feel transformed.

I have a giant vat of coconut oil in my shower. I wash my body and then put coconut oil on everything, hair, face, body. Wash my hair, rinse my body and I'm done. The coconut oil is so rich that it leaves a nice layer that feels more like my skin's own oils than anything else I've found. As soon as I dry off, I don't feel greasy, but I don't have the horrible itchy skin that plagues me every winter either.

Oh man, my dermatologist sure wouldn't agree to not wearing sunscreen in the winter! It's true that it's hard (impossible, basically) to get enough Vitamin D through sun exposure in winter in far northern locations.
Even if you're not wearing sunscreen you should be taking Vitamin D supplements.

I have really dry skin and I do pretty well if I slather Aquaphor or Jojoba oil all over after I bathe, and use either Jojoba oil or Hyaluron Filler Cream on my face, followed by tinted sunscreen.

ETA: Kerasal ointment is THE. BEST. STUFF. EVER for dry feet!

I use Aquaphor at night on my lips, hands and heels. It's like petroleum jelly but it doesn 't smell at all. A doctor recommended it and I love it. When it's really cold I'll also use it on my lips and hands before I go out, such as to walk the dogs. I have a big tub of it, and also little tubes that I keep in my pocket instead of Chapstick, which I think is awful stuff.

Since I live in a desert I need to do this year round. My fingers used to crack and bleed until I started using this stuff. I haven't had any problems this winter, even when it got down to 0F.

Thistle, I use Lubriderm like you, for body lotion. No scent, no shea butter (allergic). I use Paula's Choice for my face products. I have eczema and very sensitive skin with contact allergies problems, so I go easy with everything. My dermatologist recommends 30spf sunscreen year round, but my GP told me I have a Vitamin D deficiency. Taking vitamins for that.

I recently started to play with different oils for homemade moisturizers. I tend towards dry skin.

For face: raw honey wash in the morning, homemade toner (rosewater, glycerin, aloe, witch hazel), jojoba/rosehip seed oil patted and rolled on face, olive oil near eye area, raw honey wash at night

For body- whatever oil I have on hand, as long as I apply it while my skin is still moist from a shower.

Thistle, yes, I have heard that sunscreen blocks the UV rays needed for our bodies to produce vitamin D. I have read that ideally, sunscreen should be worn only if you are going to be out on a sunny day for longer than half an hour (for reasons of vitamin D production).

As for moisturizing, I too am battling really dry skin. I just use straight oil--sesame oil for my body and sunflower oil for my face. Jojoba is a great oil for the face as well. I'll be honest that I don't know how well the oil works, since I get lazy about moisturizing my whole body and don't do it enough. :^(

I am in hearty agreement with those who say not to wash your face in the morning but only at night. In the morning I just use a warm washcloth to wipe off my face, rub on some toner, and then put on a few drops of sunflower oil. At the risk of grossing people out, I will also admit that I do not bathe every day in the winter. On days when I don't bathe, I do a sponge bath with a washcloth, hitting all the important parts. <blush> Not bathing as frequently is a big help.

Oh my gosh I LIVE by this stuff: Aveeno moisturizing lotion for Excema. I do not even have excema, but boy does this stuff do a perfect job at night. You wake up all fresh and moisturized! Please try it you will be thrilled! I have tried everything: La Mer, Bobbi Brown Extra products, etc, but this is the best I have used. Please tell me you will try it. Cheap and no smell.

Also I have used Lansinoh nipple cream (lanolin based) on my lips and eyes at night for years and it is the best. I discovered this while breastfeeding my last baby. In the middle of the night when my nipples would scream in pain I'd rub the Lansinoh on them and then with the leftover I thought why not put this stuff on my lips. Its amazing.

I have never heard of that regarding not using the sunscreen. I also have severe endometriosis and my doctor always felt that I should wear sunscreen. But I do take Vitamin D supplements which are really important with Calcium absorption.

Regarding the dry skin. I use Ponds facial cream and oil of olay along with Bio Oil. I put on thin layers one at a time. I also use hyaluronic acid ( which binds water molecules. ) Don't laugh...but sometimes, I cut open a fish oil pill and apply that at night.

http://www.amazon.com/Original.....038;ie=UTF

I also use CeraVe moisturizing cleansing lotion at night, but in the day time I use a moisturizing witch hazel with no alcohol and just swipe my face with a cotton pad - I don't wash my face in the morning during the winter.

http://www.amazon.com/Petal-Wi.....d_sim_bt_6

For the body, Lubriderm, Bio Oil and Bag Balm. Bag Balm is like super thick vaseline. It was used originally for the udder's of cows and the hands of the people who milked them. But you will be sticky. I slather overnight.

I don't wear sunscreen on my face any time of the year unless I'm specifically going to be out in the sun. I have very sensitive skin that reacts badly to all sunscreens. The only one that I've been able to use on my face is the Shiseido one that you shake up. I even wear sunscreen-free foundation. With that said, I think it works for me because I am a sun-avoider for the most part. I may get a little sun exposure on my daily commute and coffee and lunch runs, but I don't specifically spend time in the sun ever, summer or winter.

I feel like my skin is in pretty good condition for my age because I'm a sun-avoider and I have low-wrinkle skin genes. FWIW, I am 43 and I just got carded this week (and the guy carding me apologized before I handed him my ID, but said he had to card anyone who looked 26 or younger. I figure it is my last time, so I'm celebrating a bit!). Year round I use Dr. Denis Gross Hydra-Pure moisturizer, which is ridiculously expensive, but seems to be the one thing that my skin really likes. It is sunscreen free and is supposed to have a chelating effect that keeps impurities from irritating your skin. I think if Lubriderm works for you and you don't need a sunscreen, you should embrace it!

I think it depends on where you live, Thistle, but in cold climates we do lose a lot of vitamin D in the winter from not having our skin exposed to the sun.

I'm usually too covered up in winter to be concerned with sunscreen (except my face, but my foundation has sunscreen.

All year round I use Jergen's Ultra Healing moisturizer for all non-face skin. In winter my facial moisturizer is Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle -- the rich kind in the jar: http://www.eucerinus.com/produ.....creme.html In our sticky summers during the day, I use the lotion version: http://www.eucerinus.com/produ.....otion.html

What little skin we show in these winter months takes such a beating. I would love to know what you other ladies use to moisturize in the winter.

I have been use dye free scent free Lubriderm all winter. I have oily and very sensative skin (allergic to darn near everything!)

I was told by my Endocrynologist not to use sunscreen in my moisturizer in the winter as our bodies need every drop of sunlight they can get on a day to day basis. (She did say to use it if we were going skiing or the like, just daily wear). Anyone else ever hear/told this?
