Like Thistle, I think your first winter coat needs to be practical for when it's really cold. Your winters in Alberta are even colder than ours here in Minnesota so start with the parka. You can gradually build up a wardrobe of coats over time.

I think you could dress up the parka with different hats and scarves if you wanted to vary it a bit too.

Umm, Alberta Canada, yes? It's really cold there, right?

I buy winter coats for winter. I live in Wisconsin in the US. It's cold here, especially with the lake that sends off bitter winds.

I'm a firm believer in LL Bean and Land's End "warmest" coats. It's cold. No one is looking at your coat as we all shuffle as fast as we can into the warm building

Thanks for all the input! I do think the parka will be my first purchase since it's likely the one I'll get the most wear out of. A puffer jacket or even a longer jacket is a difficult look for me to pull off, I feel like it adds bulk to my already bulky frame and it's tough to fit things over my rear! There is one kind of car coat length in a similar fashion to the parka that I might try on as it would likely be the best choice. If I don't snap a coat up now they'll all be gone by the time the snow flies which, of coarse, is how I would typically shop and has happened to me the past 2 years!! Thanks for all the help!

I like the parka but for me, deep UK winter (probably no where near as cold as the Alberta winters) it's a puffa. I got a lovely north face one last year and it is like wearing a duvet. It is super easy to take care of too.

I am a Puffy pusher, lol. I'd start with that. Without underlayers, they're not as hot as one might think, so I also feel it would be of more service. But I'd follow that up with a wool coat.

For deep winter, tho, would you need a longer parka?

I like them both a lot! Great choices.
I guess it depends on the weather, and what you need MOST. And they both serve quite different purposes. I don't think it would be amiss to get both, if the budget allows.

I would rather go for the cinched waist parka as cold weather leaves little time to bargain with something that doesn't cover the rear. We have windchills here that can go as low as 50 below so that wouldn't be the time to wear the second coat option. I think the first would flatter a woman's waist better and at least offers the warmth you want. The second appears to be more of a dressy topper and suitable for very brief trips out and about or at the very least in less inclement weather.

Parka is more for deep winter and coat seems like a transitional fall topper so you can use both. I prefere little bit longer toppers myself, they provide better insulation.

I'm looking for a winter jacket, only I don't know what to look for! Im torn between a parka for the cold Alberta winters and a beautiful wool coat in maybe a moss green. I'm a part time casual worker who is a very sloppy casual dresser, I'm trying to change that and the look I'm moving towards is more feminine versus butchy but still casual. I've found 2 but they're so different I honestly don't know which I'd get more use out of. I'm a plus size with a big caboose and full bust. I am in the very real process of beginning to build a wardrobe, this includes basics and essentials, my first wardrobe since I was In university, so 25 years ago? Any thoughts?
