I am looking forward to seeing how this silhouette is worn moving into the winter ... you've got great ideas here and they seem practical for a more elevated casual or dressy look, which is what you do so well Lisa!

Lisa p I think your Blondos look perfect!

As Suz and others have mentioned, I much prefer a higher shaft boot (not tall, but closer to the bottom of my calf than to my ankle bone) because I don't love the chopped-up look of too much of a gap on my lower leg.

The outfit dictates whether my socks match my pants, my shoes, both, or neither. My socks are mostly black, burgundy, or olive, which gives me an option for pretty much any of my shoes. I have some sheer black and nude knee-highs but I consider them only for dressier occasions and mild weather. I would freeze wearing just hose on my feet in the winter, but more power to those who can do it!

Marilyn - I had the same experience with a $50 pair of Design Lab booties from the Bay last winter! They aren't leather, but you'd never know, and they are comfortable as heck. I'm hoping the Blonde sock booties I picked up last month will work here.

Seconding the sock booties (bonus they don't rub the ankles the way stiff leather does) or tall sleek boots as the warmest option. I also did the nude knee highs, thin tonal statement socks, and regular black trouser socks to fill the gap.
This years winter strategy- skirts, dresses, and full length pants!

I understand that you don't want to purchase any more boots so I'm only chiming in with my own preference. My preference is to close the gap with a high shaft bootie....same with cropped flares. It's warm and looks streamlined.

FWIW, I picked up a pair of cheap sock booties by Design Lab at The Bay a couple winters ago. On sale I think I paid something like $50. The funny thing is that I get mad compliments and women want to know where they're from every time I wear them. I'm almost embarrassed to say. :) They have a similar black pair now but the heel is higher than mine...and also still full price.

My wide leg jeans are longer and those work with all the booties below, sometimes with a gap, sometimes not. Obviously I bought heavily into the tall shaft bootie thing 4 years ago when they first appeared. They've been a godsend to me. But then, I don't really like the way most regular height booties look on me. The Elvira's are about the shortest shaft I'll go for these days.

Lisa P - this conundrum is one thing that has held me back from short, wide crops. I like how they look with higher shaft booties but I do not need to buy more boots neither to I want to expend the energy to find the right booties as I find that shaft length can be hard to fit on me. I know Angie wears hose but I do not find hose comfortable or warm enough for my climate most of the year. So the only way I would get a lot of wear out of them is if I wear them with socks and I struggle with the visual. For me - I'm guessing that I will skip them for winter but then probably revisit in the spring as I do find them easy to wear in warmer weather. I'll be curious to see how different forum members wear them this winter.

Good question. I'm pretty conservative with my socks (but prefer them over nylons for foot health!). I match the color to my shoes and try to keep the gap as small as possible - for leg lengthening, as I'm also short.
I would love to hear if anyone does deliberate patterned or colorful socks (actual socks, not hosiery like those fishnets).

I have wider leg pants and culottes in varying lengths and levels of dressiness and also for winter and summer.

These older J. Crew pleated ones are billed as culottes and have very full legs; they are also a bit shorter than some of my current crops. I had them hemmed on purchase. They are winter wear only for me because they are wool -- yet they can be chilly without tights underneath due to their width. So I wear hose.

Footwear I use with them....

With the red booties and the blue lace ups there is a gap here -- so hose comes to fill the gap and even out the line. Usually in same/ similar colour to the boot if blue, but often nude if wearing the red boots.

This isn't the best look for me (with a gap) because of my short legs. I don't have an expanse like the model above and I always get a horizontal cut off feeling. So tall boots are actually my friend here!

LaP- I love sock-boot looks - but won't be buying more boots this winter. I've hit my shopping limit for the next 10 years, I swear. Perfect look though, I agree. I am going to work with what I have - which are reg shaft height boots. I guess another question is - do we match our hosiery to the pant, or to the shoe - as menswear "rules" used to dictate?

My favorite boots to wear with wide leg pants are these lace-up Thursday boots. They balance out the volume. I've been known to wear my fleece-lined Vans hi tops as well.

I have come back to add some more ideas. I have some knee-high socks from SmartWool that are great for cold weather. I also have another pair of knee-high socks from an unknown label that I like even more. I bought them in Montreal. These socks are not bulky and work well with booties. I have them in navy and patterns.
For extremely warm boots that will keep your feet warm in Canadian winters (-30 C), that look good and that most people (except me) can walk in Maquire in Montreal has some gorgeous boots. I tried on a pair last winter that was TDF. The ones in finds came in cobalt blue, dark brown, black leather and black suede. I could see wearing these with cropped wide-legged pants or a longer length.

True winter weather is a challenge to me even when wearing skinnies - it could get really cold and snowy here (-10 C with 50 cm of snow) and I still need to get to work, go out for groceries or take DD to school and look presentable (can't just wear gear snow boots). So I'm always carefully planning and preparing for winter. In the sock department have wool knee highs, wool ankle socks and fleece lined tights, plus a pair of thermal long underwear. This year managed to find a fashion unicorn - low heel sock style leather high shaft ankle boots. They're also fleece lined so even though the leather is faux they are warm (wore them already and they were a tad too warm for current fall weather). These fit nicely under cropped pants and fill a major wardrobe hole. Will be able to wear more varied outfits this winter than before - cropped wide or straight legs with these boots and socks added depending on the temperatures in addition to the skinnies+tall boots combo.

Love the idea of knee high boots with crops as well but don't have the right crops for this look at the moment.

I do a few things:

1. Nude-colored knee-highs with ankle boots for fall weather. This keeps me warm but still makes it look like I'm exposing skin.

2. Tall, close-fitting boots under wide pants for winter. I know you said you think that's a lot going on, but if the boot is simple in design and slim fitting to the calf, it looks great, IMO. Not too much going on at all. (I'm talking neutral-colored boots here.)

3. Ankle boots with knee-high socks that are the same color as my booties (again, for winter). This makes the socks look like an extension of the ankle boots.

4. On only slightly crisp days, I will even wear fishnet anklets with open-toed booties/sandals. The fishnets keep my feet warm enough. Again, this is for just slightly crisp weather.

It seems we are all on the same page here. Mid shaft - which to me is higher than anything I currently own- would be perfect, but I'm not investing in yet another pair of boots at this point. I don't own any tall boots other than OTK's which are flat and not the right thing with this type of pant. I think it will be a matter of experimenting for us all, and finding just the right hosiery to make the look polished.

I have these various options to try out. The J Crew ones haven’t arrived yet but they have the Angie seal of approval.

I have a couple of other mid shaft boot that I think will only work with skinny jeans....

I’m on the hunt for the elusive mid shaft and would really like the booties in the pic below. (I have no idea who makes them.)

Great question and such helpful detailed answers. Thank you for bringing this up. I will be looking for flatter, higher shaft booties.

I also sometimes wear tall boots under wide legs and culottes. But mostly I wear a bootie with a higher shaft that closes or nearly closes the gap. In cold weather I mean. In hot weather it’s sandals or sneakers.

Some of the boots and booties I’ll wear. I tried a few on in my recent post about BR jeans. Those jeans are a bit longer than some of my crops.

I find that I can wear my tall boots under my wide leg crops there is enough space to accommodate them . Personally I find that I don't like the way my short shaft booties look . Perhaps I need to experiment more as I like the way they look on others . I think that it seems to make me feel stumpy. Could be its's because my tall boots and high shaft booties both have a 2 inch heel ?

I am thinking of wearing fleece lined tights and oxfords , booties or loafers, maybe even hiking boots, but have not tried any of this yet as it has been too warm mid day. We are supposed to get 4 inches of snow this week, so we will see. Some of my wide pants should probably be shortened but so far I am keeping them long to keep my legs covered. I am 5’3” on a good day so the regular length is almost full length on me, covering some of the shoe or boot. Doubling up on nude stockings is another idea.

I tried on this pair of high shaft booties in Zara the other day and quite like them. They come up a bit higher than the boots I was wearing today, and would close the gap more, which I like.

https://m.zara.com/us/en/zippe.....v2=1281531

It’s always a little awkward finding the right socks to wear with booties so they don’t show — or they show in an intentional way.
