Agree with @Cardiff - you have the real estate to be able to pull off midis without looking like you're drowning in them (*ahem* looking at myself), you lucky duck!

The pic of you and your son is fabulous! My favorite looks here are 1 and 2--I love that long navy coat on you, and the outfit in 2 seems to really suit you: the sweatshirt is interesting and the fit of the pants is excellent.

Rachylou, “dressy yet relaxed”—contradictions/juxtapositions are just my thing, huh? If you wanted to get overly psychologically deep, you might think I don’t want to commit to any one thing. But who wants to get deep like that? lol. Midi skirts were always my thing in winter, with the occasional mini. I didn’t wear them in Florida, because winter? When we moved here, I packed them all up in a box and left them in my storage locker, where they were stolen. The cord skirt, a couple plaid pleated skirts and maybe some others were in different places and not taken. When midis first trended, after we moved, I was so excited to get back and have my skirts again. I’m starting to think there’s room in my heart for some new ones. ;)

Dee, that coat is one my mother bought with me when I was in 8th grade. I need to replace some buttons, but otherwise it is in shockingly good shape. It was my son/stylist’s inspiration for getting his long black coat (although he has already discovered, as Janet predicted, that he has to be careful about the hem. He now has a supply of Shout wipes).

Nikki, thanks for the inspo pix! I wanted to argue, based on the first one, that a bigger differential is better. Then I saw the second one. Sweet!

Thanks Suz! I’ve chosen to live in places with winter, so I might as well get along with it. My son’s attitude is much better, I know. He also is wearing the family genes better than me these days too.

Zaeobi, this isn’t the only dress I tried. The other one is also a sweater dress, with heavier knit. It seemed too obvious that I was doubling up skirt & dress and felt costume-like. The power of my son’s third piece, in Berlin or Boston, is warmth! I also gave him a leather jacket this trip. It’s better against the wind, but he packed it because he wanted to use the big one as a blankie in the flight.

Sounds like the cord skirt & teal sweater outfit is a “tortoise” favorite—nothing flashy, but solid performance. Thanks for all the comments on it—the colors in the skirt are adjacent to my usual, so I struggle re what to wear it with. Having my midi selection pared down for me has pushed me to try again with it.

Your expression in #4 made me chuckle - very practical technique! The only caveat I have for it though is making sure your overskirt is loose but also opaque enough to work over the dress (I tried it before with more restrictive skirts & felt miserable!)

I think the other part of #2's proportions that works well is the distressing at the hemline - makes it feel like a less 'solid' hem, IYKWIM?

I really like the teal turtleneck jumper, but you knew I was going to say that. I also like it with the long skirt - but you already knew I was going to say that too, right?

PS - Looks like that purple velvet top is earning its keep in your closet already! Your DS's coat fits him well too - that power of the Third Piece!

Carol, that makes sense.

Angie, I tried the coat & skirt (with my lovely slides for in the building). I think I want to keep looking for a longer full-length coat. The 1 or 2” doesn’t look intentional to me. If *you* were warm enough in Heattech & tulle, then Uniqlo really does know its stuff! Thanks for the compliment for my baby. Him giving me styling tips had me smiling. He’s decided he loves winter dressing with all the possibilities for layering and making things “fancy”. I didn’t see that coming.

#10 is a super cute pic, and DS's new coat looks KILLER Awesome! :)

It's hard to see the flannel shirt, but DS's suggestion of tucking it is a good one.

#1 is my fave! I love the proportions of the navy maxi coat over the white jeans. The crossbody looks swish too.

The new Esprit skirt had your name written all over it! It's fab with the berry t-neck dress. The layering keeps you warmer too. Try the navy coat over that outfit. I wore my navy tulle midaxi skirt with cream boots to a holiday function last week, and layered heattech leggings underneath (completely hidden), and the warmth was VERY effective.

Jeans in #11 are a KILLER fit. You are all legs!

Stag, I think it is both the lack of a band plus the cropped length and the width that add structure and proportion to the outfit. An untucked plaid shirt with a pair of jeans is just, well, slanted more in the direction you're trying to avoid. ;-)

Carol, thanks for following the route! You’d think the outfit in #2 would make me feel like I was with the farmer in the dell (no, that is not a positive), but it does not. I thought it was lack of band at the bottom that made it work for me, but then the untucked shirt in the pic with my son, which has nothing of the sort, does look like hi-hi-the-dairy-o (again, not what I’m going for). Maybe it’s something about loss of waist? Because the way the cropped sweatshirt stands away from my body does hint at a waist the way a sweater with elasticated band at the bottom doesn’t.

Thanks, Minaminu! That combo felt good on too.

Ophelia, good point about the lack of longevity. Not usually my thing and I don’t really have a reason for the exception. But glad you like it too.

What a fabulous skirt! Looks like you’ll have plenty to wear it with year around too. I also generally avoid viscose because I’m unsure of its sturdiness, but if I encounter a perfect shape & color combo, it’s irresistible. I’d keep that one!

Looks like you are making progress on the changes you wanted to make to your winter style.

I like one through six in particular.

I really like the proportion of the wider, shorter sweater over the straight jeans. I know it's my thing, not yours, so ignore me at will -- but I would love to see a slight cuffing of the jeans and a glimpse of an interesting sock. :-)

The skirt over the shorter burgundy dress is also a really good look -- and as you already pointed out, a good way to extend the season for the skirt. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the jacket -- adding a bit of toughness to an otherwise feminine look. Adds a lot of interest - to my eye, anyway.

It’s getting chilly out!

1-2 These jeans have a “pull” in the fabric on one leg, so I have to pair them appropriately. The sweatshirt worked for Fla winter, but here it needs backup from a Heattech undershirt and a full coat.

3-6. New skirt from Esprit. It’s all viscose, but I think I’m keeping it. It has a yoke on top, a style I absolutely love. Am trying to do Nikki’s thing of wearing clothes for multiple seasons, in this case by using Brooklyn’s double dresses trick. I still haven’t figured out how to wear the T-neck dress otherwise.

7. Those jeans again, this time with the purple velour top and my favorite crazy belt.

8. Neither the cord skirt nor the teal sweater are new, but I don’t think I’ve worn them together before. Not sure the shapes are right for each other.

9. Getting tired of my minis? Me too.

10. My flannel shirt. After this pic my son said to tuck it in. I didn’t get a pic, but think it was better that way.

11. Made him take 50-11 pix of me in the touchabley soft jacket with the iconic “in case of feelings, caress here” sign.

Thanks for looking and for comments & suggestions.

ETA 12 is a flat lay of 7, which is too dark to show anything.
