I also a think a puffer would be great. Possibly a parka style winter coat would work as well. My optimum length is at the thigh as I find that the most versatile. However it is very cold here

The shorter the puffer the more sporty it looks, and the longer, the more ladylike imo. Longer puffers are more versatile as you can wear them with tunics and shirt dresses (as a fellow mom, I know you must have a few of these).

I try to avoid horizontal quilting to avoid the Michelin man feeling. I think an angled chevron quilting can be very flattering, or others that feature some kind of contouring. Also look for some elastic on the back to provide shaping.

Here is an example below from Laundry by Design. I have two Laundry coats and like them very much. They also have puffers made with, Thermatec, a down-alternative option that I've found to be very warm:

I was also thinking a fun puffer (sorry:-)

I really love the look of this one: modern, chic, and a bit tailored:
https://www.joules.com/Women/N.....MOTTISFONT|WI

Also comes in black:
https://www.joules.com/Women/N.....MOTTISFONT|BLACK

Agreeing with Angie. I didn't think I wore puffers until I found the right one. Look for shaping. Puffers are light weight, washable, and always seem the right weight. I don't overheat but am warm enough.

I vote puffer too. You haven't found a flattering one yet. Try Soia & Kyo, Zara, Topshop & J.Crew.

Ok I am
The exact opposite body type as you but what about a lined wool duffle coat? Something like this one from ll bean:
http://m.llbean.com/product.ht.....m%2F#78460

I have a similar coat with quilted lining and it is very warm (I don't wear puffers). I think the shape looks good on most body types.

ETA: mine is a little shorter than the ll bean one so it looks a little more casual if that's what you prefer. Mine hits at around upper thigh level and still covers my butt entirely (important for warmth!)
