I love cuddlduds for my first layer. Super warm. I wear Smartwool Socks or another pair of socks that are made of thin merino wool. I don't like Ice Breaker but lots of people I know do.
My face was on fire from wearing Alpaca. I had a horrible case of eczema from a new Alpaca scarf. I am usually okay with wool.

Seconding cuddleduds-though like them for sleep! Any sort of wool (inc cashmere, alpaca, angora) is a no go for me too, so not always easy to find nicer things. I posted a heat holders hat and socks on other thread- but havent actually worn hat yet.

I'm into a little capsule of alpaca wool - scarf , mitts and a toque. SO soft, not itchy like other wools, and super, super insulating. I have them in a soft steel grey - and wear them for driving to and from errands and on days where my hair needs to be hidden The company is Pokoloko, which supports ethically made 3rd world artisans and small "manufacturers" and is Canadian-owned. I can get away with just about anything on my feet as long as whatever it is is flat and grippy. I don't get terribly cold very quickly.

Ah, the strong sideways wind! Knits are not good for keeping warm in a cold wind. A coat with Gortex is good if you can find it. I like to wear leather pants on the coldest days because ithey keep the wind out. You may want to find a warm hat with face mask and wear it under your coat's hood. This is not a good idea if the wind makes your eyes water and nose run. I like silk or Heat Tech long underwear tops and bottoms for a warm thin layer that fits under clothes but is warm without being too warm.
Cuddle Duds are also good but thicker and may over heat you inside.
You want a long coat, not a short jacket, for more wind protection.

Minnesotan reporting in. I wear fleece leggings, or Uniqlo heattech long underwear when it's very cold. Top it with cashmere anything. I've asked Santa for Boden cashmere lounge pants and hoodie for Christmas and hope I make the "nice" list!

You’re sensative to wool? I somehow didn’t notice that earlier. I started buying non-wool sweaters about 15 years ago, and cleared out the wool while we lived in Florida. You can often find a wool alternative or two even in a line of otherwise all wool or polyester items. Polyester makes my skin crawl, so I’m just in the habit of reading labels and keeping my eyes open.

Lands End usually has a couple heavy-weight cotton sweaters every year, and WinterSilks has warm sweaters made of (duh) silk.

If you specifically want silk, be careful with CuddleDuds. My long underwear from them is thin, but it is not silk. I have silk base layers from both companies I mentioned earlier.

Lots of good suggestions upthread. I would say that base layers are the most important. I really like base layers of silk. I have some undershirts and legging-type bottoms from WinterSilks, and I also have some tops from Cuddl Duds. The tops I have from Cuddl Duds can be difficult to wear because the necklines are narrow and often peek out from behind the neckline of my top. But dang, do they keep you warm.

I have some silk camis too, from J. Crew--but I don't think they make them anymore.

When it's bitterly cold, I like to wear a maxi skirt so that I can layer really thick leggings and tights underneath it. But that might not be your style.

I find thick mittens warmer than gloves, probably because the fingers aren't surrounded by cold, but gloves are better for driving.

Good luck. It can be hard to find stuff when you are sensitive to wool.

I just got a slew of great tips for socks on my post about my son—you might want to take a look.

It’s been nearly a decade since we had a real winter, so my things are a bit out of date. I’m noticing that my jacket and gloves with Thinsulate are quite warm. It’s a 90s technology, I think, but still very worth it. And I agree with everyone above who said to layer your clothing. It’s amazing how much difference a simple base layer makes.

Head, feet, and hands. Also neck. All need protection. And on the really cold days or when you will be outdoors for a while, base layers.

I like wool for insulation but some polyesters are also good. And cashmere is lovely if less affordable.

I wear the toque below most of the time; I am in the market for one in a different colour. It needs to cover your ears to keep you warm. The problem is hat-head. For me, not so big an issue since my hair is so short.

Scarves and wraps are also really nice to have. As Carla notes, you can often get away with silk (which completes the rest of your outfit) assuming it is not too bitter.

I don't have my gloves/ mitts in Finds yet but always try to cover my hands.

Boots -- waterproof and insulated. I left my snowboots back in Ontario but have several waterproof warm boots here in Vancouver with me as well.

Due to Reynaud's, I need to keep my extremities warm. I have a collection of gloves and I am always adding to them since I start wearing them early, and then wear them long into spring. My current favourites are cobalt blue leather, but long black ones get a lot of wear as well. For the coldest days I have a pair of leather mitts.

I can't remember ever wearing a silk scarf in winter, but I started doing it this year. It actually works (and looks) better with my puffers, than any other scarf I've tried and is soft and surprisingly warm.

There is a garden center near me that has a really great gift shop-type area (like, they sell indoor plants and planters, and also jewelry, books, tchotchkes, etc.) and right now they have these incredibly soft faux fur wrist warmers and I'm kind of obsessed with them. I'd wear them over tech gloves.

I found these at Macy's, they're not quite as nice as the ones I saw but you get the idea.

Angie, your first post upthread made me curious about how you're managing your wardrobe now that you're splitting your time between two cities. Do you schlep everything back and forth, or are there some things that live in SLC and others that live in SEA, or do you duplicate some items? I know, I'm nosy, but I'd love to read more (in a blog post or a forum post) if you're so inclined.

I recently added these Sorel boots to my closet. They are fleece lined, very warm and work for walks in cold rain or playing in the snow. In real life, they are more refined looking than the picture shows, even with the lug sole (at least I think so) but still skew sporty. The fold down top is fun and something a little different. Most importantly, they keep my feet warm while I watch my kids play ice hockey in very cold rinks. :)

North Face has fleece that is very soft and fur-like. I have a jacket called Osito, and a hat called Denali. They’re made of the same soft fleece. Of course fleece isn’t wind proof, but if under a windproof shell, they make the cold feel warmer and softer.

I feel like for me good socks and hats make the most difference. My best socks are merino wool (often ski or farming brands) and my hats are also lambswool or merino.

I think a hat that you like wearing, in a flattering colour, that is stylish, makes such a huge difference. I used to wear old ones or freebies from events but now I make sure I have one or two that I really like to wear.

Thirding the base layers and whatever it takes to stay warm and dry. A warm scarf can really help.

Seconding Nemosmom on the base layers. I wear a camisole EVERY DAY, and heattech thermals when it's very cold.

Base layers are an essential for me this time of year. Uniqlo Heattech, or 32Degrees brand from Costco (on sale right now for $6.99!) are fantastic. Thin enough to wear under my pants and tops, yet really warm, and durable enough to handle frequent washing.

REI has a great in-house version of the smartwool socks. They are really warm!!

......unless you wear a hood or carry an umbrella :)

Laura, I've been in snow, ice and well below freezing temps for two weeks here at our loft in Salt Lake City. I don't drive here and do everything on foot since we're downtown. I am in the freezing elements, and I hate to feel cold. It's all about INSULATING the feet, wearing the right outerwear, and warm woolly hats and scarves. I wear lots of cashmere knitwear too.

These have been workhorses here. My hi-tops are FLEECE lined, and my feet are toasty warm.

First, a true story from earlier this morning: if the snow is falling wet and fluffy, and you have to walk into the wind to get to your class, your makeup will be gone before you get there.

Since I know a lot of north America is getting its first significant snowfall in the last couple days, it seems a good time to ask for people’s favorite winter items. I’m pretty good with coats and boots, but I could optimize my winter accessory game somewhat. Any recs for gloves, mittens, hats, scarves, long underwear or layering items, or anything else
