It sounds like you’re getting the hang of the LA seasons, Jenn! Well done :)

I suspect that as long as you have some transitional items and hot weather items on hand all the time - your bases are covered.

I don’t switch out my wardrobe at all. All seasons are there all the time, and I can see everything I own at a glance. I love that! Conversely, it makes me feel more organized and in control. I simply pick from the items that work for the weather that day. It’s somehow calming and therapeutic to me to keep my wardrobe together, and to be able to choose from all of it at any time. Is that weird?

That said, many of my clients do the seasonal wardrobe switcheroo, and like to isolate what they are going to wear for the next three months so that it’s front and centre and less overwhelming. Like you do! Makes sense. Go with whatever works for the wearer

This looks stunning and a fun project for January. Your colours are always appealing to me.

I have been watching Jessica Rose Williams and I can see how her inspiration has flown through to your closet. Your colour palette is richer with more pattern, but there is a similar aesthetic.

I am also thinking about a shorter cardigan this year if I can find one that appeals. Lovely over your dresses.

And good luck with the jeans shopping.....not the favourite item to shop for are they!!

Fashintern, I have a few wrap- and midi skirts, but I wore them pretty much on repeat all summer. You're absolutely right that they work well for me, but I needed a break, so they're set aside for now (you can actually see them folded over hangers in pic 5). Cooler weather gives me a chance to do the dresses-as-skirts thing, since the extra layer is more practical now than in summer.

Minaminu, I find them pretty versatile I often wear sweaters over the floral and slip dresses. I've worn tees under the slip dress. And I've worn the linen one open as a duster coat. The obi belt also changes up the look of the dresses pretty dramatically.

As for getting rid of things, I tend not to let things go until the decision is easy. Most of the things I got rid of had been in my holding zone for months. I tried on everything I was unsure about. Some holding zone items migrated back into my main wardrobe, a few returned to the HZ bag, and time was up for the rest.

Star, I didn't set a certain number of items, just went with what felt right. There were a few pieces that could have gone in this capsule, but my gut said I would enjoy them more if I saved them for other seasons.

nemosmom, it's a pretty substantial linen! I put several other lighter linen items away until high summer.

Liesbeth, the duster sweaters are sort of cardigans! I do think a shorter one would be really useful, though.

RobinF, having fewer things out is actually sending my mind spinning in terms of mixing and matching potential!

Murph11, the mood board was pretty much just me going down the Pinterest rabbit hole and saving anything that caught my eye. It's really interesting to see what themes start to form.

Glory, I'm leaning towards a very similar pair of jeans in a slightly darker wash (or maybe the same wash, just less faded). I considered going straight-leg instead, but I think slimmer will work better for some of my intended uses, like wearing under dresses and long cardis. I'm glad the photos were useful too! It was helpful to me to document the process.

lisap, cat-measures are for sure the way to go. FWIW, pretty much this entire process came from Jessica Rose Williams' "A Simplified Wardrobe" ebook. It really helps to just have a subset of your clothes front and center though, doesn't it? I'm appreciating it already.

Cool that you’re picking up on the subtleties of season. That took me a while in Tampa, but once I could, things were better. I echo others sentiment on the capsule—great mix of colors, patterns, and shapes, and good that you plan to add pants. Do you do skirts? I think a midi, possibly wrap, could work well for you.

Angie, I'm sticking to three-month capsules, because when I thought about it, those DO kind of fit with the weather cycles here, even if the changes are more subtle. January-March leans towards chilly and rainy. April-June is generally mild. July-September are the hottest months. And October-December is the big transition, ie: all over the place.

That being said, my "winter" capsule probably looks more like autumn for other people. My "spring" capsule will look like mild summer. "Summer" will probably be all "high summer." And my "autumn" capsule will likely range from tank tops to holiday wear. Looking at my wardrobe as a whole, summer clothing will, for sure, be dominant. Actually, quite a few of the things I passed on with this audit were pieces that just don't work for the climate here, and that I didn't like enough to ever put in a travel capsule.

suntiger, I absolutely LOVE that top. It also got the stamp of approval from my 19yo son, although he declared it would look better on him. Which, to be fair, it probably would. They have the same style in solid colors, too, and I seriously considered duplicating in black or white.

Runcarla and LaPed, I actually am pretty okay with just the two pairs of pants. I happily wear them on repeat without boredom (the jeans can go easily through multiple wears between washes, but the black ponte pants are cat hair magnets, so a bit more finicky).Weather-wise, it's also plenty warm for dresses. This week is the coldest it's been all season, and our highs are still in the mid-50s. I do really miss having some olive utility pants, though. I've tried three new pairs and sent them all back, so this is becoming a bit of a HEWI for me.

shevia, it's always nice to have someone else dressing for the same seasonality I am, and it's fun to see your ever-changing wardrobe.

rachylou, do you do drawers now? I really like having everything visible!

Jessikams, I laughed aloud at the moodboard and cat going together. Having a black and white cat means cat hair shows on -everything-, though.

slim cat, she's a sweetie. We have another cat too, but he's loyal only to my husband.

Jane, I think this might be an example of different screens showing things differently, because I have very little olive in my wardrobe these days. 2/3 of my clothes are black!

Bijou, I just took a peek at the things I let go, and I'd say about half were discarded for wear. The others were mostly because they're too heavy for the weather here or, for a few very old pieces, don't suit my style anymore.

I haven't forgotten the rest of you, but I'm always afraid of accidentally losing my responses, so I'll be back with more.

My takeaways : 1. compare things to the size of a cat 2. create a mood board , and 3 . you should start a wardrobe management service - seriously . I’d pay . I do quarterly capsules , or at least I did , and find them the best way for me to keep track of what I have and to make sure everything gets worn .

So impressive and organised. What a great start to 2021. I love that you wear out (as opposed to get bored of) most of your clothes. When it comes to shoes I am generally very good and wear them out - but too often I change size or stop loving something before it gets worn out.

Oh my gosh, so inspiring. Moodboard and cat go great together. My closet is a huge gross embarrassing mess right now, gotta take some notes from you.

Good stuff! I’m thinking I kind of miss when I stored my clothes on book shelves. I miss that visibility. I did capsules like this more often.

Well apart from having similar winters, our wardrobes are kind of polar opposites in size and organization, yet my alter ego always enjoys your capsules!

Love all your floral pieces! I'm impressed by the variety of shapes and silhouettes too. The rust/cream combos on your pinterest board are gorgeous as well, and I can see how chunky knitwear and off-white shades would be easy, organic additions to your closet.

Also, only two pairs of pants -- wow!! Is it warm enough that you are reaching for your dresses a lot instead?

I'm trying a modified capsule wardrobe approach this year, with four seasonal capsules. Each quarter, I'll do a quick wardrobe audit, define key pieces and any wants/needs for the season, and then arrange my closet to feature my choices. I'm not limiting myself to wearing just these pieces (if I really need my black heels or my cowboy boots, I can grab them), but this will be the core of my wardrobe for the quarter, and what I'll reach for most days.

My winter season is January-March. Temps range from highs in the 50s-70s Fahrenheit, with lows in the 40s-50s, although we did just have a few outlier days in the upper 80s last week, and this year has been unseasonably warm and dry.

Here are my key capsule pieces (all in Finds, too):

Bottoms:
black ponte pants
dark wash skinny jeans

Tops:
black silk blouse
floral silk blouse
Breton tee
floral thermal tee
black silk tank
black silk cami
cream silk cami
black wool pullover

Dresses:
spaghetti strap black bias-cut midi
long-sleeve floral viscose midi
long-sleeve black linen midi

Toppers:
black cashmere duster (can also be worn as a dress)
embroidered duster

Jackets:
black puffer
burgundy faux leather biker

Shoes:
All-Birds wool runners
Bed Stu lace-up ankle boots
Dolce Vita suede booties

Accessories:
lightweight burgundy cashmere scarf
black silk obi belt

Wants/Needs: I haven't purchased any new additions yet, but my skinny jeans need replacing, so that will be first up. This is also probably the last hurrah for both jackets. The puffer is leaking and the faux leather jacket is cracking and flaking. I'd still like to add some olive utility pants, if I find the right pair. My nascent style mood board for 2021 also has me wanting a chunky cropped cardigan and maybe a cream or natural-white blouse.

My wardrobe audit cleared out my holding zone, which is now down to three items. I passed on nine pieces

Photo 1 - Closet before.

Photo 2 - I took EVERYTHING out and stacked it on the bed to sort, including the holding zone and drawers. The only things I didn't pull out were the half a dozen summer items I have stored on upper shelves, scarves, gear, basics, and sleepwear.)

Photo 3 - Got rid of approximately one cat-sized bag worth of clothes.

Photo 4 - Winter capsule.

Photo 5 - Everything else, tucked away on a lower bar, but still accessible.
