The combination of a closet purge, and then being more selective of what I add, has resulted in a very modest wardrobe. Though there are some holes I wish to fill, I am slow about going about it because the item must now be a sartorial '10'. Regardless, everything in my closet equates to a high happiness factor, so no matter what I pull, it makes me feel good when I wear it.

This is a pleasant place to be in many ways, Laura. You'll probably also focus on quality vs. quantity as you slowly build the wardrobe in your new size. Congrats on getting close to your goal!

Yay for your success on the health front, Laura!

As Claire said, many of us gravitating to more streamlined closets these days for a bunch of reasons. Mine is somewhat the opposite of yours. I'm bigger than I have ever been since I had the baby. Plus the needs to standing up to all the ick only an infant can produce. Plus the exigencies of breastfeeding. Plus no time to go shop as small babies are apparently rather a time sink! So smaller closet...less focus on shopping...not safe to accessorise much...yeah, all that.

My actual wardrobe items may not be ideal for the purposes of my lifestyle just now. I certainly wish the selection was more modular. But I am finding smaller is psychologically and logistically more manageable.

I am smiling and nodding along Laura. I have winnowed as well and found that I don't need as much as I previously thought. Part of it is because I can't find the sort of things I'd like to "allow" into my wardrobe. If I loved everything out there, it might be a different story.

I think quite a few of us are feeling drawn to more minimal lines, for different reasons. I don't even know why I am heading in that direction but it just feels right. For me, nicer clothes don't need as much help with distractions. They can stand proud and alone. I was using a bunch of accessories to try to "fix" outfits that should have just been scrapped probably, but I was working with what I had and what I knew at the time. YLF has been a great help to me through this ongoing process! :)

Hooray for your new hangers and getting your weight where you want it. Good job!

So glad to hear you're enjoying a smaller, refined wardrobe to fit your new body! There is a fine line between freedom of choice and burdensome clutter!

Love the 'getting old' idea. I am doing a similar adjustment and think is has a lot to do with not only my age, but lifestyle also. I no longer go to formal parties, even for work and have one skirt I consider dressy. And as my work life has evolved to more work from home, I no longer need the suits and dressier work attire. Hmmm... I need to think about this more.

With my recent weight loss I've been forced to reduce the size of my closet out of necessity, since I can't afford to replace everything right away (OK, if I spent all my time thrifting maybe I could afford it financially, but not time-wise...). To my surprise I'm finding I don't mind much at all. We always debate about what is the right amount of wardrobe items, and minimalism vs maximality, etc. What I'm starting to realize is that it's not, most of the time, the option in my closet that I miss - it's the whole emotional story around getting to shop for it, finding a bargain or the perfect thing, all that jazz.

Anyway, I've purchased new hangers for my jackets and trousers, and plan to do the same for tops and skirts - I have gotten everything down to a set # in each category and plan to follow a strict one in, one out philosophy in the future. Same with the stuff in the drawers, although that's still a little in flux since I'm not quite at the weight I'm aiming for.

Or maybe it's just that my style is getting a little simpler and more particular. Call me crazy, but I think it's easier to wear simpler silhouettes when you're closer to an 'ideal weight' (whatever that is!) because you tend to have less things you're trying to distract from. Or maybe I'm just getting old and finding other hobbies.
