Hello, Angie! Between your comment and Ket's examples, you are making me look over my finds with a fresh eye. I might have to try mixing some red and burgundy. Although I think maybe one of my buff booties instead of the red heels....

K., I love your holiday plans so much!!! The beads and brocade really make it festive and elegant. I also love the you’ve found the neutral that works for you and that it’s a deeper neutral outside of brown or black!

Brown… I think brown can be good but tricky. Brown in general is a rather grounding color. Brown feels low energy on me. My hair is brown, more or less. I tend to need my browns paired with red lipstick or a non-neutral color, or to make sure the fabric is very rich in texture, metallic, etc. still searching for browns and other neutrals to replace black.

Ket, what great examples! That leaf green is so pretty. I wouldn't have expected it. You've inspired me to try a new combo for the holidays. I already wear the citron sweater with the burgundy pants, but I hadn't thought to make it party-ready with a beaded clutch and my velvet slipper shoes.

Brown as a neutral for me has never made me happy (completely subjective--love it on others). I realized last year that wine or plum was my brown.

Oh, so many colors abound!!! I love wine paired with vermillion, warm orchid, cool blue-green, "Smurf" blue, cinnabar, teaberry, coral blush, blood orange, blue-purple heliotrope, mustard/saffron, toasted kiwi/lime, etc. I attached photos of examples. Some of my examples of wines lean more plum, but I had a difficult time finding what I wanted, So, I settled. (HA!) Anyway... I do love wine with neutrals, but I prefer it with more color too. Or at least, having the option.

Suz, I love that! Orchid and lilac are definitely winning combos for me too with my cooler toned burgundy. I haven't tried mustard yet. I almost always wear mustard with my light blue because I'm not an earth tones girl and mustard with burgundy feels very grounded for me.

It is so lovely to see so many familiar names and faces in the responses. Hello, all!

Jamie, thank you! I love that its vibrancy comes across even on the screen.

Lisa, so true. I am 100% with you. I love and wear lots of neutrals too, but I've always craved the energy of well-combined color.

Suz, gorgeous and we are boot twins too! I often wear those Ecco boots instead of the dressier ones shown when the weather is very wet or snowy. I have the J.Crew tuxedo shirt in white and now I am wishing I had the light blue too!

Robin and Jenni, it took me years to accept navy and olive as neutrals! When I read Angie's perspective that navy is her softer black, it helped bring it together for me. With olive, I just *heard* that it was neutral for years and then one day I realized that green is the backdrop of our natural world and suddenly olive as a neutral made a lot of sense to me. I also realized why a cooler green (more of a pine than a true olive) works better for me and the cool tones that dominate my closet. And of course those cool tones are naturally harmonious with navy.

Sharan, I agree that denim is the only 100% neutral that way! Actually, denim is how I came to understand that light blue is an additional functional neutral for me. I think of it as almost denim. Once I realized that, it resolved any concern I had about investing in lots of light blue. Now I have a large light blue capsule.

Jules (and Jenni too), their examples definitely fell flat for me too. They seem like easy click-through sales opportunities rather than real fashion writing. I wonder if this is targeted at helping people who've been wearing the whole quiet luxury look for the last year or three and now need help moving into color?

Bonnie and Runcarla, I love those combos! Carla, I swear I saw you post that outfit. So gorgeous!

Sal, I sympathize. I've worn a lot more neutral-on-neutral outfits the last few years because that's what is available. I also feel like I've been seeing fewer colors but in particular fewer well-designed colors (if that makes sense). Not just muted or soft, but tired. It has definitely made the last few years challenging for color.

Here it’s all about neutrals - some recession fashion - which does end up influencing me despite trying not to be. But it’s hard to find much colour this season…..

Too many fashion journalists who have to think of something to write! That’s my take on the article. It’s one reason why I love this forum so much.

Funny! And I can see why you get compliments on that capsule. I love the combinations of wine with light blue and cream.

I can relate to RobinF's comment, too, in that I realize I see and treat most "neutrals" as colors. If I think about the concept of neutral as a color that I would put in an outfit without specifically matching it or thinking about it as a color, then I would say denim is the only one I really view and treat as a neutral. I will wear jeans or a blue jean jacket without regard to how they match anything else I'm wearing. Otherwise, what I consider my neutrals--white, stone, gray, dark olive, navy, brown, black--I will always pair with something else of that color in the outfit. Usually it's a patterned top that includes the "neutral" color.

I’m with you, none of those are “colors.” It’s articles like that which led me to own a wardrobe of all neutrals for years. Now I do like neutrals and still own plenty of them, but my current style craves colors and pairing them in interesting combinations too. Unfortunately, I rarely see articles that reflect doing so. Or see people in real life doing so either. The best color combinations I see are always at a fashion show or in a magazine picture.

The combination in the finds is lovely! I’d stop you to compliment them!

I clicked through to this article promoting seven colors that look great with burgundy and had to laugh. https://www.whowhatwear.com/fa.....h-burgundy

Their seven colors? All neutrals: 1. Navy · 2. Brown · 3. Ecru · 4. Grey · 5. Olive · 6. Camel · 7. Black.

I love neutrals, but I love intense color pairings too. Thankfully Angie keeps us creative. Based on her recommendations, my favorite colors to pair with burgundy are citron, light blue, and blush. I even love blue-toned red with it. A bit more colorful than neutrals.

Photos are my collected finds that always have someone stopping me on the street to compliment my outfit when I wear them together.
