Lisa, thanks for chiming in. I was very surprised when the doc suggested I trim them to fit the Borns. Like you, I’m afraid to nibble away at something this expensive. That’s why I’d rather find shoes they fit in to begin with. It sounds like your course was very much what I’m hoping for—one pair of shoes to fit the custom orthotic, not replacing everything, and eventually getting back to the rest of them. I appreciate your advice and you telling me about your experience. On the other stuff you mention—You know I have nothing against you, am always mystified when animosity pops up. I’d like to be able to comment helpfully on each other’s posts, and I appreciate your advice here.

Pardon me for chiming in here as I’m quite sure I’m blocked from your posts . However this appeared in the forum , so here I am . I have had a few different sets of custom orthotics . I would never trim or alter anything I paid that much for - because they are designed specifically for your foot , not for a shoe , if you know I mean . Don’t do it . Physiotherapists and ortho people are highly trained to make these things - don’t mess with them . My most complicated ( ie expensive ) orthotics only fit in my running shoes , and I wasn’t about to replace my entire shoe collection with new ones just to fit an orthotic . I did, and do , most of my “real” walking in ASICS anyways , so that’s what I did . Wore them everywhere I could ( obviously not to work ) . I took the orthotics to every shoe and boot try-on going forward , and found they really only worked in boots and sneakers . I’m glad I didn’t go overboard replacing all my shoes just for those orthotics , because they issue resolved itself after a couple of years . The one big non-orthotic adjustment I did make was giving up pointed toes in pumps and boots .

Suz, aha! Now I see the issue—different procedures. Guess I could’ve realized “orthotics” might not mean the same thing everywhere. Thank you for explaining other possibilities.

I have custom made insoles and need to find shoes to use them in. There is no way for me to try them out on their own—they are insoles only, and don’t fit into any shoes I own. I could cut them down to fit into the Borns (or conceivably into another pair, but of the shoes I’ve showed him, those are the ones the doc likes best). Once I do that, though, I don’t think they will transfer to another pair very well, because the outline might not be exactly the same, so there would be gaps around the edges. If I am incorrect and those gaps don’t really matter, please correct me!

The two steps I’m picturing are
1. Find shoes I like (hence the style question)
2. See if the (custom-made) orthotic (insoles) fit. If not, go back to step 1. Reiterate until I have shoes that I like and that fit the orthotics.

If some of these slip-ons work, great, I’m done. If not, I want to get a pair of slip-ons and also another pair of shoes to use with the orthotics (or I might just put them in the Borns). Does that make more sense?

I expect my use of the orthotics will be a bit like Anchie’s in that it will end. In the meantime, I doubt that I will need them every day.

Phoebe, the point isn’t whether or not to adapt my style OR forego the orthotics. If you look at some of my past posts, you’ll see that it is likely very possible for me to find something that fits both needs, because I’m much more into “sensible shoes” than stilettos or anything else tricky to walk in.

Angie, thanks for weighing in on the style question. I’ll give those a try & see which, if any, of them work with the orthotics. I hear you all on the difficulty of predicting fit, and that I might need to do a couple rounds of finding styles I like and trying them out with the insoles. Can you help me find some pale pink ones in my budget that are similar to the Ugg Aika boots in yesterday’s cold weather round up (or the general Ugg look)? I’d prefer not to have suede, because it would hold the dirt too easily.

ETA: Slip ons are especially tricky. At least for me. I have narrow heels and higher arches and can barely keep a slip on ON. So my toes work overtime to grip it and it causes blisters on my heels -- ugh.

However, the practicality and ease are undeniable! I'm in search of workable slip ons for my indoor footwear capsule. Not an easy task.

What Angie said. I think it is a two-step process.

FIRST, decide on what orthotics you need/ want to use. (Custom or over the counter, e.g. "Superfeet" or some other brand.)

If not custom, you'll need to try them out on their own to see if they address your issues and you'll also need to try them with the shoes you intend to wear them with.

I don't wear custom orthotics and my foot issues are different than yours, but having suffered from plantar fasciitis at various times, I purchased a number of different inserts which I use in different shoes, depending. And typically, I will take the provided insole out of the shoe and insert the orthotic in its place. Although not always. The heel inserts I use are put on top of the regular insole.

As Inge says, some orthotics take up a lot of room in the shoe so that there is not enough space for your arch and/or your heel rises too high in the shoe. Sizing up does not always work -- in fact it never works for me. I have to find a shoe that will work with the orthotic. That's one reason I use different orthotics. I have one very thin Superfeet sole that actually does not provide the arch support I would like in an ideal world, so my feet do tire at the end of the day of walking. Yet it's far better (for me) than trying to walk all day in a flat shoe or sneaker. Then, I have another version that comes closer to providing decent arch support but can only go inside certain shoes....and so forth. It's complicated!

I'd recommend fitting the orthotic first and/or looking at shoes specifically designed for your issues. For instance, in summer, I have good luck with Fitflops for preventing/ treating my PF. (Not in winter as their closed shoes are mostly too wide for me.) But doing a search for shoes that work with bunions/ fallen arches might be fruitful.

When I work with clients who have orthotics, it's almost always a better and more comfortable fit when the insoles of the shoes come out and then you insert the orthotics.

From what you have selected, I like these best for your style: burgundy or grey.

You really should try them on because fit is so personal.

I wouldn't spend money on anything that makes me feel unattractive and when I have a problem that I choose to consult a doctor about I give their advice a chance.

I like your doctor's "single pair" advice and you might find that if they're truly comfortable it'll be worth the creative effort to adapt your style.

No advice on orthotics because having trashed my feet early on I changed my ways long ago and have no issues. I support your focus on healing and I would go all the way with that fully anticipating improvement.

Anchie, I think all the colors shown work for me. You’re right about black and my coloring, but I wear it here in Berlin, because it is so ubiquitous. The styles/cut of the shoes are what I’m uncertain about. I know “clunky, old-lady” shoes are in style, but it can be hard for me to tell the difference between those shoes and shoes that will actually bring to mind the stereotype of an old lady in orthotic shoes. I can be a woman of a certain age who occasionally wears orthotic soles without looking like that stereotype but I need help picking the shoes to do it. Which of these look current and which look “old”?

I wore custom orthotics for about 6 months 2 years ago, until my issue was resolved. I had best luck with boots- almost all my boots worked with orthotics. Unfortunately most of those 6 months were not boots weather. Sneakers that have removable insoles like Ecco soft 7 worked for me, but I had absolutely no luck with loafers, moccasins, pumps or ballet flats. After putting in the orthotics those shoes became too shallow that my feet were slipping out of them. They also felt to cramped because orthotics were taking up too much space. I haven’t tried the oxfords because I don’t wear that style but they may work because of the adjustable laces.

Toronto, thanks for commenting. That’s interesting/disappointing/useful to know about the laces. When the doc saw these Borns, he suggested trimming the orthotic to fit. I get tired of the laces, but maybe they should be my “orthotic” shoes for now and I can get slip-ons just for fun.

Inge, thanks. Those thoughts on factors that go into this are very helpful. The Tamaris and monk strap shoes don’t look very tall in the toe, so they might have to go.

It's so hard to predict beforehand, Fashintern, and yes, that is super annoying and frustrating. Trying footwear on is the only way to be absolutely sure, I'm afraid.

Even if a shoe looks promising (not too pointy toe - although I had a pair of very pointy Zara boots that fit my orthotics perfectly - a wide enough shoe overall, and front part that looks wide enough and also "high" enough because an orthotic takes up room in the shoe which gives you less space for your foot "vertically" if that makes sense), it still might not work because there are quite a few factors that influence fit :-((

Sizing up half a size or even a full size can work sometimes too, but not always, at least not for me, because then the fit is just too loose and I step out of the shoe.

FI, I don't have orthotics myself but my kids and sister have ... I think in the end you have to try in the specific shoe to see, but a less pointy shoe is obviously better and (according to Sis) laces are optimal so that you can adjust the fit. Good luck finding what works for you

Not sure if I can kill two birds with one stone here. I’ve been thinking about getting simple slip-on shoes for the winter, and now apparently should ease into orthotics. Can those be the same thing? What do you think of these shoes as carriers of orthotics and/or for my style?

QUESTION 1: I know lots of people here wear orthotic insoles; can some of you please help me out? The doc who treated me after I broke my big toe last summer is convinced I need orthotics for fallen arches and bunions. I’d rather focus on healing, but figure it’s worth making sure I have some that will work. Today he lectured me on my black tallish(ish) Redwing boots and metallic floral Chelseas not being appropriate. He also thinks my red ankle boots are too extreme, which made my PT roll her eyes. I’m willing to make a (small) effort to get some shoes the soles will fit into. (I don’t need them all the time—he suggests getting one pair that really works well). Which of these look like good bets for orthotics?

QUESTION 2: I’ve been thinking about how much I missed having simple slip-on shoes last winter—I get so tired of pulling on so many pieces and buckling/zipping/tying things up! I have a bunch of slip-ons in my cart already, so I might combine the purchases, but maybe I should just go ahead with the slip-ons and then let the orthotics be their own thing. Then I can just think about getting some slip-on shoes I like. Which (if any) of these styles look right for me?

IN GENERAL: Can you tell in advance if an orthotic soles will fit into a shoe? Will any of these work? I notice that Angie commented that one of the pairs of shoes in her cold weather picks today fits an orthotic.

NOTEs ON THESE PICKS The first find is from Call it Spring, the brand that made my beloved multi-color loafers with mirrors. Those fit perfectly and lasted forever. I’ve never heard of Darkwood (the Uggs knockoffs) before, and would need encouragement before ordering them. Towards the end are some pairs with closure, which isn't really the remit here, but I think I could slip on the monk strap shoes without unbuckling. About the colors—looking through my finds, I see that it is no fluke that these pale pink ankle boots appeal to me; I’ve been making finds of similarly-colored shoes for years, including considering pink suede Timberlands when we first got here.

Bonus question: do any of them look like me?
