Plonkee the first three silhouettes are mainstays of my wardrobe. So you will have plenty of company. Agree with above, it's in the pieces and the details but the overall outfit plans are perfect!!

I first recall booties (she called them shoe boots) when the professor I was TA for wore them to class in 1992. I bought my first pair, the ones I recently gave up for dead, just a couple years later. They had an awesome vintage vibe. I picked them out with a friend who's an engineer who needed shoes to wear to construction sites, so we both paid a lot attention to insulation and walkable heel heights.

Jenni NZ, I have shoes from (way) before 1996, but no booties. I don't even remember them from back then, but I was busy with a new baby of the non-sleeping persuasion.

Wow Laura G! None from 1996 like me?
Plonkee, everything you want to wear is what I've been wearing all winter. I still get heaps of compliments day-to-day. Though I admit more of them are on shoes than anything, especially the bright cobalt patent booties which are THE most complimented item I have owned in my entire life

Clothes don't start looking dated when a different look is shown at NY Fashion Week (after all, how many people even see that?). They start looking dated when the different look becomes the most common thing you see on the street, which could be years later, or never if the new thing doesn't catch on.

And a good thing it is, because I just got around to buying my *first* pair of booties!

Suz summed it up perfectly. Besides that, I plan to keep wearing what I like. I don't have anything in my closet that veers too far from classic anyway.

Thanks, folks that's super helpful.

I need to refresh my shoe capsule anyway so it should be relatively easy to make sure it's current. I'll also keep a close eye on accessory trends.

I agree with what Janet said. It's all in the details. Certain heel shapes/ types won't feel as current; some patterns will feel more current than others.

Skinny jeans, ankle boots (or shoes) and fluid or voluminous tops

Skinny jeans are now a modern classic, IMO. They won't be "dated" looking. Ankle boots probably fall into a similar category. A fluid top should still work. But you might also consider waist definition.

Tunics, leggings and ankle boots

Not dated, just not the most current.

Ankle length relaxed skinnies with fitted tops and shoes

Ditto. Make sure your shoes and bag are current.

Tube skirts with voluminous tops and any kind of dressy footwear

Sure, why not? But maybe switch up the footwear. Try a tall boot!
I hear what marble said about tube skirts and at the beginning of the season I wasn't feeling my own, either -- but then, as usual, I ended up wearing them again because they are SO practical for my summer climate and lifestyle and so easy to wear. I don't wear them in winter anyway so won't be concerned about that angle.

Faux wrap dresses and any kind of dressy footwear

Wrap dresses are for sure a modern classic and should come to the fore with waist definition being more current.

All of the things you mention sound pretty classic to me. I think the details help keep the look updated -- pay attention to footwear, handbags and accessories, etc. Certain prints and fabrications will look really current (moody florals are big now, for instance), which helps keep the whole effect modern. Block heels on dressy footwear instead of stilettos, etc.

Angie mentioned somewhere that a trend is around for 10-15 years and takes a while just to trickle down from the runway to retail...so that made me feel better. I am every visual so a quick description is hard for me to picture, but none of these combos sound "horribly dated" to me.

I also think some things are just instinct, or growing tired of a look and wanting something new. Example: I haven't worn either of my VC tube skirts in a year because I simply am not drawn to the look anymore after wearing them quite heavily the two summers before. But if I saw a woman sporting the same skirt I would not think her outfit looked dated. It is simply a look I don't feel like participating in any longer.

From just reading through the outfit descriptions you mention, I think a reasonable tweak might be adding some knee high boots to the mix...that can be worn with skinny jeans, leggings, skirts, or dresses.

I will continue wearing things even if I may think they are dated if it is something I love to wear. But the best thing I have found is embrace only the trends I love, tolerate some things if they are current and the only thing I can find at the time.

I think skinnies are going to be around a very long time. same for tunics and fluid tops. Ankle jeans and pants also as they are just easy to wear. Same with ankle booties.

Is it really out if you still see people wearing it? Are things out just because some fashion person says they are? I am thinking these days most people pay no attention to what these "experts" say. People wear what they find in the stores. Some things make a big more abrupt appearance, have a short run and then disappear-one example is maxi skirts a while back.

So, since Angie shared some perks at new season trends, I'm wanting to check in on whether any of the things I was planning to wear are going to be horribly dated. (Classic, modern classic, are A-OK.)

Skinny jeans, ankle boots (or shoes) and fluid or voluminous tops
Tunics, leggings and ankle boots
Ankle length relaxed skinnies with fitted tops and shoes
Tube skirts with voluminous tops and any kind of dressy footwear
Faux wrap dresses and any kind of dressy footwear

If there's a tweak you can see that would make it more fashion forward let me know.
