I agree the burgundy moto looks the most fab on you in terms of fit and color! The grey one is a great color on you too. The cobalt one color is nice but if they’re too tight it’s time to move on. I understand about wanting to hang onto things that fit unzipped, because I do it myself. But it’ll feel better with a more fluid fit if you can find a new one! Moto jackets are always classic. As for the teal Burberry, if you decide to sell/pass it on, I’d love to be considered!

Another here who no longer feels good in more fitted silhouettes. Not that I ever really did much I guess, but even less now. I only ever owned one moto (hard to find in petites and hard to alter and maybe a bit heavy for me?) but I do appreciate them on others and think they are classic. I see what you do though, and think the burgundy is the one with the most potential to be worn again. It is hard to get rid of old favorites for sure!

A good try-on session is a great idea. I had one that I loved years ago, but I also don’t like things too fitted anymore. I ended up putting in the holding zone (a closet in my basement), only to take it out and find it falling apart (moth or moisture, nothing else got ruined so I’m not sure). Anyway it got tossed and the entire closet got a good clean out!

This thread is so helpful for me - thank you for starting it, Janet. Like many here, my peri-menopausal body, current trends, and my priority for ease and comfort have meant that I have not worn my fitted leather motos or denim jackets for so long - yet they hang in my closet. I also feel the need to look more current, and this tailored silhouette makes me feel stuffy. This is a good reminder to go through all my stuff, look at all those fitted/tailored pieces that no longer have the ease I want and pass them on. Thank you all!

I’m happy for you that you could adjust the cobalt a bit and that you have decided to keep it for now. I suppose if you go another however many years not feeling right in it you might change your mind on keeping it. I would have kept it too but I think everyone knows I keep sentimental items! I have managed to reduce down my sentimental stash though which is good, but I do have room for what I have kept.

Plenty of great advice here already so not sure I'm much help. I have slowly edited out all my motos over the past few years. My last moto was in ivory knit I edited at the start of the spring season. I just don't reach for them anymore so I decided to let them all go.

I like the fit of the burgundy best, and it's not a common moto jacket color so if you think there's a chance you'll enjoy wearing it again, then keep it. I also really like the cobalt, because cobalt is a great color on you and also hard to find. The more common colors I'd let go, because they'd be easy to repurchase again if you want to start wearing motos in the future.

Good culling work!

I hear you on the fitted thing. Especially tough for later, because it doesn’t work for me to head over to oversized fits either. I don’t have the stature for that.
And armholes, sleeves— too high and too tight and I won’t wear. Too roomy and I look shapeless. I’ve not been able to wear the oversized blazer look at all of I look like a pinhead. So finding the exact fluid but not too roomy fit is tough. Somehow the jacket style has to allow for it without losing its structure. Harder with very soft or casual fabrics or even with cotton or linen if rumpled .

I think this is why I resonated with the post about having a harder time finding essentially “ elevated casual “ jackets one might wear to look “ nicer” and a bit stylish but still “ effortless “.

One of the things I love about your comments on this thread is the way you acknowledge how you are feeling now without clinging to how you felt then. There is an acceptance here that change is inevitable and allowed.

I only had the one genuine leather jacket. The others were pleather and did not survive. I am keeping and very much enjoying wearing my moto jacket. I plan to keep it for years to come, as well as my two denim jackets. They are classics.
You truly have an enviable collection. I am glad that you are sorted here, Janet.

I added a Moto toward the tail-end of the period where they were trending. Fits were already skewing more relaxed at that point (maybe 2018-19ish?) so I opted for my larger size and still find myself wearing it a few times a year. The combo of warm brown with silver hardware is so hard to find that I don't think I'll let go of it til it wears out. The thing I'm really not reaching for is my much-more-fitted denim jacket. Hanging onto it though because, again, silver hardware!

Interesting comments. I have two leather motos. They were a bit tight but after a health issue and a big drop in weight, they are now loose—so I am glad I kept them. You never know.

You can always give away the blue one (love it!) but you can’t get it back once it’s gone.

LJP, I'm still learning this too. Clothes I own and have loved in the past don't fit the more rounded body I have today, even though in some cases I can button or zip. Or, as you say, they look too tiny or fitted and don't look current. I'm appreciative of the changes to more oversized and fluid fits available now.

I’m on my phone so I’ll have to go back on my laptop later to respond to individual comments, but I’m reading and enjoying every one!

This has been a really productive exercise for me. I have a quiet house to myself this morning, so I’ve been doing a little work in the closet, and these insights have been helpful in evaluating more than just jackets! As we speak, some of my old gear has gone into the giveaway pile for the same kinds of reasons. Certainly those pieces are not dated, and they *fit* per se, but I have not been reaching for them because they are *more fitted* than I enjoy now. I have other favorites that are in heavy rotation, and I have enough that I don’t have laundry bottlenecks. My gear storage now looks way less crammed and is more functional (pics below).

While I worked this morning, I wore the blue moto over a short sleeve tee. I also loosened the buckle straps on the sides of the jacket — something I completely forgot I could do. It does feel much better when I try it this way, and I have enough attachment to it that I’m going to keep it for now.

The grey and burgundy jackets have returned to my wardrobe for now, but they are on notice. The dark green feels bulky in the shoulder and small in the length, so it’s going, and the dark brown suede is also out (easy decision, I think I got it for like $25 at the Rack 10 years ago and have only worn it a small handful of times).

I have a few other more fitted jackets that are also in the giveaway pile. There is a great one from Blanc Noir (I don’t think they’re even around anymore which is a shame), that I wore to death years ago. Same kind of fit issues — fits but snugly, and even the arms feel restricting.

I think the pandemic era and the newer, looser styles have ruined anything even remotely tight for me!

This was sort of a 'triggering' topic for me - not in a bad way, but your words reminded me of how I used to justify (to myself) wearing fitted blazers/moto jackets etc. If I could get it on, it didn't matter if I couldn't button/zip it up, because no-one wears a jacket like that anyways. I spent many a year wearing really small sizes (some sort of misplaced pride, no doubt) because I could get them on . It took me way too many years to realize that just because you can get into a piece, it doesn't mean it fits properly. Zipped/buttoned or not. Even thought the style may be "evergreen" as someone earlier suggested , fit has changed over the years to be much more fluid and to have a lot more ease. Tiny fitted pieces look dated to my eye (here we go again).

Your style in particular has morphed into something more modern and interesting and I can't see why you'd want to go back .

Janet, I agree with others that the burgundy looks best and that grey one is pretty cool too. I like Jaime's point about you probably wanting a more updated version at some point. Love the new Athleta jacket too.

I echo your sentiments about not feeling squeezed or restricted in clothing. Increasingly I find this has been so...five years? I have a leather jacket that while not a moto style, is a much tighter and cropped jacket than I wear now. I wore it and LOVED it for at least a decade. Now I can't button it and I haven't actually worn it in about five or six years. However, for now, I love seeing it in my closet. I have just a few things like that, they are a bit sentimental or represent that "era" of life. My wardrobe is on the small side so it's not a problem.

Thank you for all the great wisdom here!

The comments on the blue jacket also are making me think it may be time to let go of the old teal Burberry trench (sob!). It is not as much of a leap to fit that comfortably, but again, the style is more fitted than what’s out there now and what I enjoy wearing.

It may be a long time before I find those blue and teal colors in outerwear again, if ever, but perhaps indulging those colors in my tops more will go back to being my strategy.

I did just order a duplicate of my workhorse bomber from Athleta in cobalt blue — I had looked at it over and over, and I wear my white one a ton. And then my Pilates studio retreat ticket came with an Athleta coupon and I decided to jump on it. It’s not the same as a leather moto, but a fraction of the price, a favorite color, super versatile (wear it out to lunch or on a hike!), and I’ll wear it a lot!

I have this exact same problem and am procrastinating about doing anything. In this situation, I tend to think: how hard is it going to be to find this style if I feel like wearing it again? Black moto jackets will always be around. Same with grey or brown. I would keep the harder to find colours: the dark green and the burgundy. They look good. Cobalt is rare of course, but I think the fit is off so it’s unlikely that you will want to wear it again. It is sad letting old favourites go, I know.

I like the burgundy the best and I also like the forest green (2). I think the blue fit is no longer right sadly.

If you were to keep just one I would keep the burgundy - and I like it worn as is.

Moto jackets are not me - but I like them on others. I think it's the hardware and zips - one of those trends I leave to others that wear it better than me.

Interesting! My previous comment was to store them. Seeing you in them even I can clearly see they are not your current style and the cobalt blue one looks too small. I like the dark green on you the most. I recall you were searching for this green actively this past winter. I can see why as it looks lovely on you. Still if it was me and I had the space I would keep them :).

1. I still love the fitted, classic moto (and will soon do a post of my own about this) but...if they don't feel good and you don't feel fab -- they're just taking up real estate.

2. You still look great in all these colours! And (sob!) I love the cobalt one so much!

3. They all look like too constricting a fit except the burgundy (to my eye). and maybe the grey.

4. I would let them all go, except possibly those two. And make room for something fab to replace them.

I think you should also keep the blue one, if you have enough space in a holding zone. The fit isn’t perfect now, but you never know, it might later, and you would have regretted passing it on.

Soooo glad you showed us what they look like on, Janet! Thank you. It makes all the difference :)

I see what JenniNZ sees in terms of fit. The burgundy moto looks and fits best! (As you mentioned too). The grey is my next favourite! My suggestion is to keep those two, and pass on the other four.

The comments so far have been interesting and thought-provoking, but trying the jackets on in a mindful exercise has been especially important to give me some fresh insight.

One of the factors I seek in my outfits now is a sense of *ease*. It can come from a number of aspects of the outfit — casual vibe, flow, a calm color palette — but ease in the *fit* has become a really critical part of the equation for me.

I’m pretty much over bodycon. My body and comfort level have changed, especially in the past six years. I have a few items that are a bit more fitted, such as a mesh top, or a knit skirt, but the vast majority of my super fitted items have been culled over the past few years. At my age, I don’t expect I’ll want to return to anything constricting or tight.

Looking at these jackets in that light has made me even more critical of them, but just as important is how I *feel* in them. If I feel squeezed or restricted, I don’t feel fab.

This thread elicited surprisingly conflicting feelings in me. Usually I am decidedly on the side of keep a piece you like even if you aren't feeling it right at the moment. And obviously I do believe older pieces can and do come back. I have (almost) no doubt that more fitted motos will return to the spotlight one day.
But in this case I am going to say, given the fit issues and the amount of time you haven't worn these, I would give them up except for one or two that you feel like you might wear this month. I feel like they will probably not return to be a staple in your wardrobe and if and when they do you will want the updated version.

I love the burgundy one! It does look like it fits the best and it’s a very current colour, if that matters to you?

Just for fun, when I got home after being out all day, I decided to try each one on, with a pair of current wide-leg jeans, and just a basic long sleeve tee underneath — a bit of a blank slate to evaluate each jacket.

1 Cobalt blue IRO leather jacket. 15 years old. This kinda breaks my heart because it was my favorite for years. It’s the smallest, tightest of the bunch. Love the color, but even the arms feel too constricting. It doesn’t help that the lining is stickier than the linings of the other jackets, so it makes it even trickier to fit over my tops.

2 Rebecca Minkoff dark teal/forest green wool. 10+ years old. This one is the most cropped, and the epaulets are more exaggerated than the others. Haven’t worn it in probably 3 years. Wearable if I don’t zip.

3 Kit faux suede burgundy. This one is the newest (although still pre-2020) and fits the best. Color and dark hardware are nice. I can zip but likely wouldn’t wear it that way. I think I wore this a couple of years ago but not since.

4 Grey Truth & Pride, maybe 12-15 years old. Has some nice design details and a good neutral for me. Wearable if I don’t zip. Haven’t worn it in years, maybe not since before covid.

5. Bernardo very dark brown suede. Dates to maybe 2017ish? Fits reasonably well but wouldn’t bother zipping. Haven’t worn it in probably five years.

It’s a little shocking to realize that it’s been years since I wore any of these. The colors are all good for me, and I think the styles are fairly classic. I like that they all have gunmetal or silver hardware. But not sure if they’re worth keeping. Maybe it would be better to let them go and invest in a really great moto (on the level of the IRO one) when they trend again.

Thoughts??
