Thanks Bijou, such kind words. I'm so sorry about your mom. You have the memory of her, she lives on through you. Sometimes loved ones that are gone do this to us. It's a continuum! For what it's worth, I had a strange dream about 2 years ago, I saw my deceased beloved dad (an artist, but also a professor) who visited me. He showed up in a pink cowboy hat (!) and told me with excitement he was "discovering a whole new world of fashionable headware -wink, wink." I was left puzzled after the dream as hats have never been a big accessory for me, and also how strange my father would show up linked with my fashion interest... well, when I started getting into wigs, and I saw how passionate I became, I couldn't help thinking of that dream and of him.
So when you mention your mom, I can't help but tell you: go with your instinct. Honour her dear memory. Every time you think of her, she lives.
Thank you for sharing with me about her. I am touched that a post about wig that I have put out there made you think of her in this endearing way.

You are a wonderful wig model, I can see why you have so many because they all suit you. My personal favs are #25, 27 and 35. You really are able to change your style to suit the wig too, the benefit of having a great wardrobe that allows you to slip into different style personas - of course whilst still looking like you.

This has been a really fun and informative post. My late Mother was very ill and required a wig for a time, it would have been wonderful to share a post like this with her. At the time, we were shellshocked at her stroke and brain surgery and just got her a wig that was as close to her natural hair. She would have loved having a bit more fun with her hair and have a few more playful options to work with.

It is really lovely that you have shared all of this knowledge with us.

elpgal that sounds really cool. I heard of an artist who collected her hair (she was Asian) to make framed pictures with them, but never of anyone who was able to collect them to the point of actually creating hair addition!

Thank you. I am going to save this post. My great- grandmother (in India) used to collect her hair as it shed and have it made into extensions and attachments for her bun. I don't know if they still do this...

It’s so neat to see all these wigs in action.
I agree with Sal that you look like Madonna!
I generally prefer the wigs with no bangs!

I like 27, 28 and 29 the best.
I also like 10-11, which is a short pixie cut with no bangs. The shape of the cut is flattering.

Wow, thanks for all the details. I have often admired the wigs that my African-American friends wear. This sounds like a great solution for thinning hairs
So how do you store your collection? It must be tough not to crush them. I have enough trouble storing purses so their straps don’t get all bent and wonky.

I'm interested because I wear my hair short and blonde and would love to have more - or blue! - hair on occasion. I wore wigs occasionally on stage, though, and found them hot. I also wonder where eyeglasses fit in. Do the temples tuck over the cap, or under? And finally, how do you store these beauties?

You can see we are all curious. I lived for years in a community with a large Orthodox Jewish community, and that is the connotation that a full wig has for me. Not taboo exactly, but more something that must be worn (like long sleeves) for particular reasons that I did not share. But I agree that white culture doesn't exactly embrace wigs. I think we're more ok with "pieces" like extensions or bangs. But I have watched tattoos become mainstream, so I can hope that wigs do too. They look so gorgeous on you and allow you, as Sal says, to be a chameleon every day if you like.

Thanks, Krish. You’ll be setting the wig trend soon! I hereby crown you Queen Wig.

Thanks for the research and info. I can imagine it’s daunting trying to navigate the world of wigs unless you grow up with it in your culture - and you’ve made it easier.

Krish, which are your favourites, and how do you store and care for them? Do you have to wash and style the wigs?

And last, have you had a fun and kind reaction from friends and family who know these are wigs. Your students too, I suspect. I hope so!

You’ve had a rough year, and I’m glad you’re having fun exploring wigs and styles.

Rachylou, that's too bad. Regarding fashion tendencies I noticed that a lot of younger women wear wigs and removable extensions for just fun or flattery, which is promising because it means wigs and toppers will become more and more available.

Sal, thank you. Your feedback encourages me, as it is always a bit scary. Because of the huge tabou it's easy to fall back in a negative, non constructive train of thoughts implying old Hollywood clichés of the "spinster" and the "mutton dressed as lamb" etc., destructive feminine images meant to hold us back from doing what we want. Madonna fight this too!
You liked the more expensive wigs and it's only normal. I made this post so one could see the difference. Sometimes, a cheaper wig will look great (such as 18-19).

elpgal, there are more options too. If you don't like the feel of a wig on your head, you can get toppers and clip on extensions.

I tried a higher end topper by Jon Renau called "Easy Part"... it was as expensive - if not more - than a full wig. But My oh my. If you find one that matches your natural color - or if you are willing to have your hair dyed to match it - then it's a super easy, non invasive solution. I tried the 8 inch one because my own hair is shoulder length and I wanted to create some lyers as well, and the result was so natural. Except the only toppers the lady had available there did not match my color, and I had come for a wig... otherwise I was getting it without batting an eye.

You can also get clip on hair extensions and good cheap ones to look for are Hair2Wear from Christie Brinkley. It's basically a band that you clip from ear to ear under the top layer of your hair. The effect is sudden long hair with your own top layer appearing as an intentional shorter layer. It's quite cool.

Joyce, no, they hold very well, they don't move, and if they do, it's a fit problem. The inside caps of these wigs are made of bra-strap-like bands running through from nape to hairline, across which run the wefts on which hair strands are attached. That is for a standard cap. The wig holds on your head, you can secure it further by tightening it at the base of your nape. Should one want more, there are various options: glue, clips, wig-grip head bands, filets...

Nice review and visuals. Your newest addition is lovely.
Just out of curiosity, how do wigs hold up to very windy weather? Do they have to be secured with pins underneath or need a kerchief?

I thought I'd make a little post about wigs as a dressing accessory. A wig also serves as hair protective device and prosthetic, but once you get into them it's like a new world of options opens up. For me, who at age 50 have badly thinning hair, discovering these natural looking wigs was a blessing. One more plus: I noticed I'm not running cold all the time like I used to. I suspect it's because one looses a lot of heat from the head. This is good news for dressing because suddenly I don't have to bonify everything I wear with the extra layer of a topper.

If you start getting interested in wigs and if you have African American ancestry, you're in luck. There are beauty shops in most towns catering primarily to African American clients because it's within the culture to wear wigs and weaves. The synthetic wigs there are affordable; some are very well made for a low price. You can buy synthetic or human hair, and each have their advantages and drawbacks. Unfortunately at the local beauty shop most of them come only in darker colors or lighter colors with very dark roots. Also, their lace-front wigs (the lace-front being the way some better wigs are made, with a faux realistic hairline set on a lace piece) is brown, and so if you are caucasian, it doesn't work. Yet, I recommend to everyone interested to go to a place like that first to check out the wigs because one always finds something suitable.

Then there is another market of higher end synthetic and human hair wigs, and that higher end market seems to cater primarly, but not exclusively, to Caucasians. Those wigs are sold through a specialty boutique or online. Prices triple in comparison to the ones from the beauty shop.

Since I have become a freak myself and have amass a substantial collection so far, I thought I would show you some wigs bought in the beauty shops and some bought in higher end boutiques, so you can have a visual.

Let's start with the cheaper ones...

1-3: three wigs I ended up not getting - although I regret for 2, and this was in Japan too so impossible to go back. I think 1 and 3 are from Uniwigs, while 2 is from Presila. These 3 wigs are fun, but they are not the most compfortable to wear. The blue one has no realistic front, so I would have to fidget with it at home, cutting or pulling baby hair myself which I tried to do once on another cheaper wigs with disastrous results (see pic 4).

5-7: A blond pixie wig of unknown origin that I ended up getting and don't regret. It was dirt cheap, really. The inside cap is all covered in fabric, which is not very breathable, but the effect is very realistic and everytime I post it here you guys rave about it.

8-9: Two wigs I ended up getting without breaking my wallet. The first one was bought in Japan by Prisila. It's machine made, but the fibers are soft. I'm not wearing it much because I realized I don't like the color. Have worn it once - briefly - in a crowd before. The second one (9) from Besche is one I wear a lot despite a lower level of comfort: the ginger color and shorter length suits me. So that was a pretty good deal for money.

10-11: A recent purchase: ginger pixie by Uniwigs. But this one has a much larger cap and I am afraid it's too big. It could be the style. Have not worn it out in public yet. It was extremely cheap. Also, I look super tired in the pics, and don't know if it's because I was tired of if it's the wig.

12-14: Ashanti wig from Pure Natural Bohemian Wigs, also bought in a local beauty shop for less than a 100$. I had to have it restyled a little. I love the color, although it has A LOT of hair. I removed hair and thined it out wth sheers and still, it has tons of hair. I enjoy wearing it from time to time although I think its bulk make me look like a 1970's flight attendant if I wear dressier clothes with it.

15-16: Jacy of Vanessa Wigs. A short, darker brown pixie with shorter back. Again, it wasn't a bank breaker, and I find it fun. But I admit to not wearing it as much, probably because I'm more into coppers right now.

17: Didn't get that one from Uniwig but thought it was fun. It's not an expensive wig.

18-19: A long, copper blond Juliane Moorish synthetic unit from Pure Natural Bohemian called Candy Girl. This one was just over CAN 100$. It's also "heat friendly" which means you can straighten or curl it using very very low settings. However you MUST straitgthen it regularly to maintain smoothness.

20: Gabriela wig by Janet, again a very cheap wig considering the mountain of fun curls you get for the price! I quite love that one. It can become a bit overwhelmingly hot on hotter days though, due to the shear amount of synthetic hair involved. However, it looks good attached behing the head too.

Now onto more expensive ones...

21-23: This wonderful human hair piece from Eternal Wigs was purchased in Calgary, and I haven't been able to find anything like it since. Even the company's website doesn'T feature this particular curly shag mullet style. I love it, but people around me seem not to. There might be a tweek needed, it's work in progress. Human hair is something else comfrtwise, this is byfar my most comfortable unit. And the hair feel so ... human! the price was CAN $400. Whih for human hair is a steal.

24: As a comparison this is me in a Greman made high end human hair wig. Comfort is incredible. Cut and colo though, I'm not sold. This unit is close to 3K. Of course I tried it on only in the boutique.

25: Fontaine wig acquired in Ginza, Tokyo, in a high end store. It's entirely hand tied. It's a dream to wear. The cut was frankly a bit frumpy, so I had it restyled into what you see here in 25. I wear it all the time, and now I have taken to wear it as a toper over my died strawberry blond hair, for a bi-color mullet effect. Lots of compliments. It was surprisingly only 140,000 yens.

27-29: Jon renau's Haute, a high end wig. I love it, it gets a lot of wear. It has a lace front which imitates my hairline and dissimulate the wig. Nobody knows it's a wig. This one was a bit over CAN $400.

30-32: Jon Renau Alia, sme thing, this is the most expensive wig I bought and it was my first one too. I enjoyed the wig a lot and it's still very nice. but I hurt when I think of the price. Being Canadian and buying in a boutique as opposed to online is the reason.

33: High end Ellen Wille (pronounced woh.lah)' s Talent Mono in Safran. Lace front too, very nice to wear. Growing on me.

34-35: This is either a Renee of Paris or a Noriko or Armore. I tried it in the boutique and opted for a different one. For the moment. The lady wrote that one down, it's my next purchase before Christmas. Around CAN $ 200.

36-37: My latest purchase, Renee of Paris Courtney in Mochaccino. I adore it. around CAN $160. But it's quite warm. So it would not be good in the summer. Here of course, in the winter, it's perfect.
