Thanks Isabel, Linda, Jeanie, Alexandra, Karie and Cciele for responding to my post on wearing wigs. I do find them fun to wear and a great way to complement the mood that I am in. I'm not bald, but, I just didn't feel like myself in certain outfits that seemed to accentuate my thinning hair. Having cut my hair in order to minimize the appearance of thinning hair, the four wigs in my collection have proven to be a wonderful and a quick solution that makes me happy. As to comfort, the wigs that I have purchased have adjustable bands and I wear a mesh coverlet over my own hair to flatten my hair and to help keep my wig clean. I have had to cut the band trimming the coverlet so that it fits my head loosely and comfortably. I can comfortably wear my wig for 6-8 hours and I have never experience itchiness or scalp irritation. As to looking natural, I only shop for a wig when I am rested and have the time to try on and try on. Plus, I have found a wonderful young helper in the wig shop who is very candid with me. My hair is naturally dark, but, not super black so I have not gone for anything darker than my natural hair. Instead, I have purchased varying shades of brown to a barely black that is close to my natural hair color. I concentrate more on the hairstyle, cut, and keeping the length at or just below my chin line and whether or not the wig flatters me. Thanks ladies for your comments and your support.

If I'm in the mood, I'll wear a wig when going out at night. So I guess, yes, I'm using it as an accessory

If my hair was thinning, growing out, or for whatever reason didn't look the way I wanted it to, I would wear one. I say if it makes you happy, go for it!

I wore one when I was growing out my hair. I didn't think of it as an accessory but rather a 30-second solution every morning. I loved it.

I am interested in learning more about wigs. I have thought about trying one. It seems like a fun way to instantly sport a new hair style. I worry that it might not look natural or may be itchy or hot. Do you find your wig comfortable?

I've flirted with wigs, mainly prompted by discovering a choppy bob style wig at LoveCulture a while back. It was so inexpensive I felt like I HAD to try it, and I like it a lot. I was around for a wig-and-hairpiece Golden Age back in the 70s (?), and this feels a bit the same to me. I haven't worn the wig a LOT, but enough to think of it as an accessory with particular outfits, for sure. I've considered getting another, but haven't found any I really like. A lot of what I see are not colors I think I can wear or want to wear, so that's part of it. I wouldn't mind a nice medium ashy blonde mid-length wig. I don't like the idea of coloring my hair, and I've had a bit of grey in my natural hair for a while now, and generally like it.

Thanks for starting this topic, I am curious about how others feel about wigs these days, too!

I know two women, one in her 30's and the other in her mid 40's, who have used wigs as long as I have known them as "accessories". They never know which scarf and bracelets I am going to show up with and I never know how their hair will be "styled". : ) It's fun.

I have a question about wigs and whether or not readers of Angie's blog incorporate them into their fashion ensembles? I recently responded to a 2012 post that Angie wrote on Modern Age Appropriate Dressing. In it, I discussed how YLB helped me to transition from the world of work to retirement. And, with that transition came the recognition that my hair had begun to thin. Rather than continue to feel angst over that, I don one of my wigs from my growing collection of wigs. The styles that I choose are very age appropriate and seem to confuse my audience of friends and those who see me regularly. In part because my hair has not begun to gray, yet. What I want to emphasize is that I wear a wig an an accessory. In fact, I have been known to remove my wig in the gym if I should arrive wearing it. People get a chance to see me with and without my wig. Underneath my wig, my hair is styled in a short age appropriate hairstyle. For me, I have made wearing a wig a part of an outfit and not who I am and I feel better about my thinning hair for having done so. In a sense--I guess--wearing the wig has allowed me to take control of a naturally aging process in which I lack control.I would be interested in hearing what others have to say. Or perhaps, Angie might write one of her daily blogs on the subject.
