FashIntern, interesting! That's the territory I want to explore--cropped widelegs. Do you see people out on the streets wearing this look? I saw a few around here in the Midwest the Fall, but not very many--it's such a fashion-forward look and here I'd say most people are more conservative.

Browsing through Zalando’s offerings, I was reminded of this post. If you want to take a tip from den Deutschen, here are a few shots from their website. I notice higher hems and low heeled boots.

So K.M.: Are you thinking a tight ankle fit snow boot that will go under wideleg pants? These ones from Bogs are fairly warm, waterproof, and very streamlined. They fit well under a straight or boot cut. The issue with the black is that the salt shows pretty easily, but there are other colours. They also have one with a higher shaft.

They might be a bit too sporty for your needs though.

For those of you who don't actually deal with snow... it's not just getting wet, wet will dry. It's the salt, the sand, and all the gunk that gets washed off the underside of cars, that ends up on the roads and gets scraped onto the sidewalks. So with longer pants, you'll also end up with white high tide marks from the salt, or nasty brown splatter marks up the back of your legs, just from walking very carefully. And the splatter marks can stain. It's especially bad when the temps are around freezing, when things are slushy, and cars spray stuff up when driving by.

I'm loving the longer lengths, but the reality is starting to set in.... sigh.

Love Abby's suggestions! I remember the bouffant tucked army pants in laced up flat punk-style mid-calf boot look; I thought it was so cool.

Thanks for starting this thread and bringing this issue up.

Good answers have been proposed, such as cropped wide bottoms and culottes (but then in Canada at least you must wear tights under them, otherwise, forget it. Cold seeps through there and it's excrutiating guaranteed).

When I want to wear wide hems pants, I wear heeled booties (low heel); they tend to be just a bit higher than the shoes. So the look of the pants change a bit (it's not ground grazing anymore, which is the point). And when the snow is heavy or when it rains or ice rains, I resort to folding the hem back loosely a couple of times, so it's protected from the ground - and the droplets from walking, another big problem skinnies tucked into high boots solutioned.

So my solution is not stylish and not durable. It wouldn't suit a long distant walker for example. In the 1970's I remember grown ups sporting heavy cuban heeled leather knee high boots under their bell bottoms, and their bell bottoms significantly shorter than today's.

I find that Sorel has a high shaft and some of their boots are lace up so they provide a lot of ankle stability. They are well made very functional, especially for a "fashion" winter boot. I own several pair and they are my go to boots for work when the weather is bad.

I had never heard of bloused pants! Super interesting!

Molly Mac, these boots are very stylish and I could see that they would look good with pants and not require a change in the office. Does the wedge make them unstable though? That's always what I wonder. My ankles are prone to twisting--not sure if they are too flexible or just not firm enough --so I always feel I have to be extra careful on heels and wedges. Adding snow and ice to it... still, I'm tempted!

I'm with Shiny. And I wore those wide leg pants back in the 1970's in Boston and Connecticut winters. Too much bother for me now so I'll stick with my skinnies or straight jeans when it's wet outdoors. Warm and comfy beats damp any day. Yup, I'm old!

I am a huge fan of Sorel wedge boots. They look fab with wide legged pants, are waterproof, and are ridiculously comfortable. While I would not wear them for a day sledding or shoveling snow, they are a great option when commuting in wet and slush.

Who has had this problem for a long time? Guys. How do they solve it? Some ignore it and hope it will not go away. It won't. Many carefully tailor the length so their pants hem at their shoes and their snow boots at the same place. That can be tricky, requiring the same fit on their shoes and their boots. Not as practical for us. Most well dressed guys where I live wear heavy boots and tuck in the hem...Army style. Practical triumphs over flawless fashion, but many of the guys still look pretty good in the snow.

We can wear booties with a little more height in the ankles, such as Uggs or combat boots. Both were designed with this problem in mind. Don't tell me they don't look fab. A lot of us wear these to look fab...and younger. Then neatly fold the pants at the crease and tuck them in. That is one way. Another way is like we did in the Army when we gals were really a minority there: blouse the pants. That means give it a muffin top look above our boots. If we fold it carefully, we can avoid wrinkling the pants. Back then in the Army, we even had special elastic bands to make blousing our pants easier and more resilient to movement.

Going to the Army for fashion advice...now there's a concept.

I think the best solution is still vintage: a midi skirt and tall boots. That is as warm as pants, doesn't drag in the mud, has leg wear options none of which show, can be worn all day or changed out with shoes indoors, and really looks fab. All by itself.

I’m all for skinnies in my climate. I do have some dresses I can wear over skinnies (denim or legging-like black ponte), which widens my options slightly... but it is pretty much the same silhouette all winter. I’m personally ok with it because I find sticking with one silhouette the easiest way to have a smaller wardrobe and fewer orphans.

The fold-and-tuck is always how I deal with it when I have to wear real snow boots. Otherwise I guess I just aim for the plowed/shoveled areas and if I get a bit of snow I shake it off when I get inside. A touch of wet usually dries pretty quickly.

I have to admit that I don't wear my straight/wide legs as long as Angie thinks they should be worn, though. It's just not practical.

I didn't wear it that way. I had just arrived to the US from a warm climate and knew nothing about cold-weather tricks. I had one pair of waterproof booties that worked under my flared pants, and which were never warm enough. It took me years to realize I needed a proper pair of snow boots. I thought people just suffered through the cold (and I wore two pairs of socks).

FashIntern, I used that folding technique to tuck jeans into tall boots circa 2008! And you are right that booties would still leave me with soggy bottoms, except for a couple of pants hemmed to wear with flats.

suntiger, I am in dire need of one of those hot-cocoa cozy days at home!

torontogirl, the clipped hem is an interesting idea. And I'll have to look up Princess Kate in wide legs!

ElaineSS, that's an interesting solution. In the past I've kept dress shoes in my office, though never more than one pair so that didn't always work. I never thought to keep different bottoms!

Angie, I see your point, but... I can't fathom another winter of living in skinnies-tucked-into-boots :O with the occasional dress or skirt day sprinkled in... Even changing into dress shoes at work is not always satisfying. I live in Minnesota and the winter here goes from October to April, give or take (last year there was a snow storm in May). I drive to work but have a short walk, which might be manageable, except that I often have to walk outside to different buildings where I work. Then it gets tricky.

I do have two new pairs of culottes in heavier fabrics, which I bought precisely to have winter alternatives. I just haven't learned how to style them yet. I'd pair them with snowboots for the commute (sure to be a goofy look) and change into dress shoes at work. When I get a chance I'll start a new post on them...

I’m with Lisa P, Shiny and Suz.

Do not wear long wide legs in the snow unless you are indoors all day and commuting by car.

Another fold-and-tuck here. Could be one reason I am not particularly drawn to wide legs. Maybe if the boot shaft isn't terribly snug it won't wrinkle the pants too much?

I've given up on commuting in wide-leg pants. I have a half mile walk to the Metro and then another walk at the other end of the trip to get to my office. My solution is to pack my trousers/heels, then commute in leggings/snow boots and change when I get to end of my journey. To reduce the weight of my backpack, I keep an assortment of heels/booties under my desk.

I second Suz' Blondos suggestion, but I'm not sure a bit of hem-slop can be totally avoided, unless you were to cuff them up somehow (I'm thinking a little hair clip or something to hold them up). But I agree that I think this is why skinnies will be hard-pressed to be beat, at least in winter. Good luck; I saw Princess Kate in wide pants the other day; a sign of the fashion times for sure!

Either booties or wear the boots under the trouser legs*!

*doesnt work if more than a couple inches of snow. In that case hibernate at home with fuzzy socks and hot cocoa!

So I just tried to google this, found a million titles that looked promising, but, on closer inspection, they were all variations on cuffing or pulling socks up over the pant leg. Not what I was looking for.

I haven’t tried it in this mllenium, but here’s how we did it growing up: pull all the fabric to one side of your leg & smooth it out. Give the fabric a karate chop vertically, right next to your leg. Fold that extra fabric along the chop mark, keeping it smooth against your leg. Hold it there while you put your boot on.

Ps. Assuming you do get Blondos or something like them, how will it help? Won’t you still get snow on the hems of your pants?
