Thank you, Sal and Angie - the outfit felt great :)

Angie - Madewell styled these pieces together too, but I didn't intentionally buy them together for that reason :P

Suz - thank you! Also, am about to restart PT for my hip, which is much better but never fully healed. But I hurt my foot last month and discovered today that I have a severed tendon that requires a minor surgery to repair (I’m not in any pain now though, but one of my toes is misaligned). So I will probably need PT for that too and it will likely halt my other rehab while I can’t put weight on it. Booo.

Seriously...I was all about silhouette change this year, too.

Like you, I'm putting a bit of an emphasis on health/ fitness again (after a hiatus of a couple of years). Bon chance!!

slim cat - yes, I agree. It was my first try at pairing with shoes today so I’m glad it’s a winner!

Thanks, notsaf!

nemosmom, I’m sure I’ll post about the larger issues soon when I do my 2020 post. As for the pants, the pulling is hardly noticeable in this pair. Even the models on the website have this much pulling in some cases!

Jules - everything you said is 100% accurate as to what I'm feeling right now. Thanks for putting it so well!

Janet - I definitely need to channel some of the urges that get me to shop some other way. I can't sew and don't have space for a sewing machine right now, so not that. Same goes for beading, etc. My job is getting busier, which will help with the daytime hours.

Arbitrary limits are the worst for me - I just blow past them and laugh.

That said, I am done shopping for the year, and hopefully through January, except that my mom has asked me to choose my Christmas presents from my own Amazon wishlist. I may add a puffer coat in a different color--not a strong need, but it is a gift after all. My house doesn't have space for lots of other stuff... until I move in a year-plus.

ETA - resulting outfit today. Feeling good!

Christina, just chiming back in to say I relate to many of your feelings around shopping (I tend to use it as an enjoyable form of procrastination), and like you and Suz, I don't do well with arbitrary limits. I'm working on thinking of ways to channel my style hobby in the new year that don't include shopping or spending. It's not easy. I have a sewing machine and a very rudimentary level of knowledge on how to use it, but I don't know if that's enough to get me going on that track. LOL

I can relate enjoying the current trends and having a change in perspective on coventional flattery (I think that’s part of what you are getting at, based on this and some past posts, but please correct me if I’m wrong). For example I still see skinnies as the most ‘slimming’ in the mirror, but I feel way more myself in wider silhouettes. It’s freeing to change my priorities and self image.

Thank you lyn, Mirjana, and TorontoGirl - I am giving them a whirl today but am likely to hem them before the next wearing.

suntiger - I have noticed that too! It made me feel more okay about it.

Liesbeth - thank you for your input! I’m actually pretty aware of the larger issues around why I shop, though that awareness hasn’t motivated me more to make any changes yet. I have actually thought of a few small things I can change without much effort. I will try them but I don’t want to make any pronouncements about what I will or will not do in the new year here because I don’t like doing that and then not following through. I don’t find that kind of public accountability motivating, sadly. I’ll have some thoughts on my general intentions in a separate post about 2020 though

Christina, I felt compelled to give a quick reply to your thoughts on shopping and restraints and your health plans for 2020. I'm guilty of boredom shopping AND retail therapy. I agree that if you take on a large project like fitness you shouldn't stretch yourself thin with adding too many others. BUT it may very well be that your efforts on one front make you less prone to shopping (if that was a diversion tactic in the first place eg). Or it may have no effect, then you can tackle shopping goals the year after. Maybe just be a bit mindful if you crave shopping and think it might relate to a larger issue that in no way would be fixed with buying stuff (but that may only be my personal projections).
On the pants: no fit expert here, but I like the color on the last pair!

Christina, I really like your approach here around "acceptable imperfection" re the whiskering (which fwiw I would not have noticed).. Since none of us are clothes hangers, I think we all make these negotiations, and I really like how you are doing it mindfully here.

I really can relate to your needs for changing up your pants silhouette a bit- I, too was a bit fed up with skinnies- and think a wider hem balances up better our curvy bodies- so yes please you have to buy those new workhorses- if you like them as they are now firstly available in years!
I like the length (and color) of the first pair very much- second (darker one) needs to be hecked a little, now you are sorted with this silhouette-please have the fun!

Gigi - eek indeed! That would be up to my bra line, basically. Thanks for trying though! 11 inches is about my limit.

Suz, thanks for your insights. I’m having my weekly bout of insomnia so I will expand a little after all. I do take my work into account-the org I work for is highly effective and my department is crushing it at raising money for the environment. I would like to consume less, in theory, but I think I consume relatively responsibly. My clothes get passed on in good shape mostly to a local org that resells or recycles them. I’m concerned about decreasing how much shipping I do, though. I do return stuff in person because I have that luxury. My carbon footprint is low, as a person without a car etc.

Living and working is Manhattan is both great and awful for wanting to look current. I think what’s current won’t always speak to me as much as the stuff right now does, though; it didn’t always in the past. I’ve just felt this sea change in what silhouette I want, for the first time ever, and it’s above and beyond whatever habits I may have. This coincides with new thinking about myself and what makes me comfortable in my own skin. So it ended up not being an especially bad time to work on my habits.

My main goals for 2020 are health related, to continue progress I’ve made and improve on it, so we will see where other self improvement items go. I’m wary of trying to change too much at once!

I like them, Christina, and I like the outfit as a whole, too. With the top, I mean.

FWIW, here are my thoughts on shopping limits.

1. Arbitrary limits don't work for me, either. I get rebellious, first of all. And second, they are sort of like fake deadlines. If there is no evident reason for the limit, something tangible, it can be difficult to accept it.

2. You are already doing a lot for the causes that a shopping limit would be contributing towards in your daily work. It doesn't mean you don't have to think about it -- it's just that when you do think about it, remember to add your important work into the equation.

3. If fashion gives you great joy and buying is fun (and believe me, I get this!) then maybe for you, the way to contribute is elsewhere, and the goal with fashion is to ensure you are passing along the items you no longer want in an ethical way and doing it fairly quickly so they make another person really happy.

I know this is really tough -- when your fashion persona includes a strong dose of "current" it can be really difficult to say no to new trends. I also feel this and struggle with it.

I found a pair of wide-leg jeans from Free People in a curvy fit if you think that would tick all the boxes for you. I know how frustrating it is to have the pulling at the crotch (my nemesis).

https://www.freepeople.com/sho.....nim&c

I tried to do Finds, but I can't get the Finds applet to work on the Free People site.

No worries, Sal! I take responsibility for myself. My recent self-improvement efforts have been focused on trying to snack less and exercise more, with good, though not perfect, results. I should stop saying I’m going to shop less until I’m ready to tackle that in earnest, probably. It’s a goal for 2020, but so is losing weight.... very hard for me. fortunately my size won’t decrease until I’ve dropped a good 20 lbs so maybe if I succeed I won’t shop like crazy immediately.

I know these things are complicated - I just didn’t want to be a total enabler.

Hobbies are tricky for sure. I have lost my mojo for a couple recently - but regained my cooking inspo.

Sal, that’s another story for another time. It’s a valid point, though- don’t get me wrong! I have to get my mind right around buying less and that’s work that’s got to happen over the coming year. Space and money aren’t an issue, at any rate.

Basically, I need to figure out what the strategy for me for to buy less is. The strategy I tried for 2019 was an utter failure and I know anything resembling trying to place artificial restrictions on myself will backfire. I’m sort of at a loss but I prefer not to hash it out here in full, for now. The problem, in broad strokes, is sort of that I need a hobby but I’ve failed at taking others up than fashion for various reasons. Most of what I’d like to do would cost even more money and take up space I don’t have!

My job is about to be very busy over the coming months, which will reduce some boredom shopping anyway.

The dark green pants look fab! I’d definitely shorten them just a bit to show the shoes. Fit is much better than the Loft ones. I think you will enjoy this silhouette!

I can have this pulling too- there is a level where I accept it too.

You look great Christina - you pretty much always do. You are stylish, fashionable and beautiful. But you do keep talking about buying less and then not doing it..... so I have to say do you really need these pants?

If the answer is yes or even no - but I really want them And can afford and store them then I do think they look nice.

shevia, the creasing is much less for sure.

Slim cat, I may try this outfit tomorrow but with boots that have a bit of a heel. The page for the blouse actually shows an outfit just like that with these pants, though I didn’t buy the whole outfit on purpose. Then I will decide about hemming.

I think the last pair got a potential to become the one: great color, some stretch, less pulling. Just a bit of shortening maybe or - stronger shoes.
Like your dark floral top.

Wow - the outfit with the top looks great! I don't notice the creasing there and I imagine the fabric will give a bit?

Got to know, Janet! I think the lighter color of the jeans, both those and the ones I tried, doesn’t help. The jeans I have coming in tomorrow are dark.

I think it would be rare for me to find a pair of pants I’d want to size up in and then have massively tailored in the waist avoid this issue, so I think it’s trial and error for me if I want this look. This pair, for example, could already be slightly tighter in the waist, and the larger size is long gone. I hesitate to have anything taken in due to my tendency to bloat, though. Fortunately, I like these as is - the color helps and the fit is better than the Loft ones for sure.

Many other high waisted pants have been too tight across my belly, which is a dealbreaker in and of itself, whiskering or no. So I gotta decide what I can and can’t live with outside of that :p
