For me, it's not the thong that makes my feet look fat, it's horizontal straps without some kind of vertical or diagonal. I like a t-strap—very slimming!

I have skinny feet. Yes, they are bony and almost fatless, so thong sandals look quite nice on me, even-though I have big feet (UK 7). But normally thong sandals are super flat and have hard soles, so my fatless and cushion-less feet don't wear those too well. Guess there's always a problem!

I too have wide feet but as long as they don't hang over the side, I don't mind thongs. They are not unflattering on me, whereas ballet flats, in general, make my small feet look like stumps.

It doesn't bother me as long as the foot isn't hanging over the shoe. I have quite wide feet but they aren't very fleshy and I happily wear thong sandals but I do usually go with a wider fit to prevent any overhang x

This is exactly why I don't like thong sandals on me - even though I quite like them on the right feet.

I have some gladiators (mine are black but they are the same style as the pic) that are pretty bare but have a very clever rigid arch support piece sticking up on the side that very effectively holds in the foot pancake... so if anyone is looking for a bare-ish sandal style that might still work you might want to look for something similar. The arch support piece looks a little funny on the shoe but you can't see it once it's on your foot.

(These are Taryn by Taryn Rose, which is a brand that I generally think is overpriced and not all that spectacular, but I do like this particular (unfortunately no longer available) style... unfortunately I don't know of any other brands that do this sticking-up arch support thing on sandals.)

I am also not a fan of a really bare sandal on the top, I like to think the straps distract from the shape of my foot. I stay away from sandals that show a lot of foot such as these.

Oh yes, I have been there!! In flip flops, I don't care unless my wide foot sides stick out past the footbed (Yuck!)

A few years ago, I realized that my feet look best when that outside edge of the foot is contained - especially the center third of the edge, if that makes sense.

So, even these adorable oxfords would give me the muffin foot in those openings. . . :-(

This is a great description of why I don't wear ballet flats! Too much expanse of foot to shoe ratio!

I have narrowish feet and still have the pancake/duck foot problem in very bare sandals. In my case, it's because I have basically zero arch so without something holding in the middle part of my foot it just becomes a pancake, especially in very flat shoes.

I don't like to wear d'orsay pumps for the same reason. My foot...spreads and looks not cute. Give me a closed-side slingback any day of the week.

I found some really cute and comfortable flat thong sandals with a zip up heel that were quite comfortable. My feet are on the wide side and I looked like a duck in the shoes! I realized that I look much better in a sandal the has some kind of strap across my foot. I think very bare sandals look best on a slim foot.Ii was also worried that if I wore shoes without sides my foot would grow like a person who runs barefoot. My husband thought I was ridiculous but the sandals are going back. I would have been obsessing about how my feet looked and if they were spreading every time I wore them. Has anyone else had this experience?
